i'm not reading this entire thread, but how come steve lavin isn't a candidate? he had several sweet 16's at ucla and isn't nearly as bad as they make him out to be
4/20/2006 6:10:49 PM
For all we know he could be, Lee Fowler hasn't shared his list of candidates with anyone.

Steve Lavin is apparently still on the list...although I think he's a backup right now.Backup to who is the question of the day...

A little birdie told me Steve Lavin is out of the picture. don't know how true that is tho[Edited on April 20, 2006 at 6:27 PM. Reason : SCHPELLING]

Big Bird told me that the new head coach will be from Texas
4/20/2006 7:32:21 PM
well if lavin is the backup, then that means there's no way whitt is in play, unless fowler is just insane.hopefully lavin is the backup to montgomery.

lee fowler will take the reigns, since no one else wants to coach here

it's not montergomery, according to his wife.

BREAKING NEWS: New head coach will be...
4/20/2006 10:15:23 PM
well if jbrick is right about lavin bein the backup, sounds like he's the guy.at least i hope to God we hire him over whitt...
4/20/2006 10:16:12 PM
4/20/2006 11:04:10 PM
I think Lavin is just waiting for the "right job". He's got it made as a commentator, and it's tough to go from UCLA to say... UNC-W or somewhere similar. I have a feeling it'll be Belein or Kruger.[Edited on April 20, 2006 at 11:08 PM. Reason : Whitt is sounding more like a possibility every day, though]
4/20/2006 11:07:06 PM
4/20/2006 11:10:21 PM
Lavin is strictly West Coast though... his parents and his own family have always lived in Cali.Just to note, he was the 5th youngest head coach in Div 1 history at 32. He also did go to the Sweet 16 in 5 of his 6 years at UCLA (the last being the only one when they went 10-19).
4/20/2006 11:18:51 PM
4/20/2006 11:19:18 PM
^^I don't think him being a "West Coast" guy will keep him in Cali. And I'm not saying I don't like him that much either. I think he was a little over his head in UCLA...and hopefully if we hire him, he will have learned him from that. I'm not down on Lavin, but I think we could do a little better. But he does have potential.
4/20/2006 11:23:28 PM
i think i said something about this thread reaching 50 pages around page 25-30, i was kinda joking about it...but now im sad that it prob will reach it and we still arent anywhere near a coach

I don't understand why the search is taking so long. I mean how long do coaching searches usually take? I can understand fowler taking the first week to throw all our resources at the big name coaches but why can't he persue the others simultaneously and get a signature by now. I mean I want the best coach possible but it will really hurt if the search is going to take over 3 weeks and all we get is a B list coach. Also I thought the word was that the position had been filled. What happened to that?
4/21/2006 1:09:55 AM
rumors and bullshit
4/21/2006 1:11:16 AM
of the remaining candidates, i think i like lavin
4/21/2006 1:31:06 AM
you have the worst judgement out of any poster in sports talk, including beardawg
4/21/2006 1:39:01 AM
ok who do you like out of these then?lavin, beilein, whitt?i know you don't like beilein because you hated herb. that leaves lavin and whitt. assuming there are no unknown candidates, are you SERIOUSLY telling me you'd rather have whitt than lavin?someone who coaches fordham to a losing record over someone that went to 5 sweet sixteens in 7years?who has poor judgement now?

4/21/2006 8:17:12 AM
haha true.but i meant between he and i. he's a douche though so i fully expect him to prefer whitt to lavin.

4/21/2006 8:36:59 AM
Dave Glenn says that Beilein's buyout is $3 million, so there's another reason you can scratch him off the list.Which I guess leaves Lavin and Whitt. Fuck.
4/21/2006 8:37:59 AM
4/21/2006 9:03:01 AM
^^^I say we hire Lavin just so we can see that hot piece of ass at games from now on.And buyouts really are of no concern right now. If Fowler wants Belein or Kruger, he'll pay the buyout. We really aren't any position right now to go to a fallback choice because of a buyout.

I have been reading the threads but I cannot find what happened to Gregg Marshall from Winthrop? Is he out of the picture? Did he also play us for a raise? Sorry if it has been posted elsewhere. Be gentle.
4/21/2006 10:09:46 AM
I don't think we've had too much contact with Marshall. He can't play us for a raise unless we offer him the job (Like Calipari or Barnes). I don't expect it to be Marshall. I said months ago I'd love to give him a shot, but apparently Fowler isn't considering it becuase it would be such a huge step up. If we offered him the job, he'd take it. 1) Even if we payed him $500,000 per year (next to nothing), it'd still be about 4 times what he makes2) Winthrop couldn't dream of matching us money-wise... nor would they try[Edited on April 21, 2006 at 10:33 AM.
