IS will rock your world. Don't go with the 28-105....you'll want something wider than 28mm. After the camera's 1.6x crop, it's like you're looking through a 45mm lens, not nearly wide-angle.

someone above asked about crumpler. I have a crumpler keystone backpack, which holds a 12" laptop, about 3 lenses, camera body, and some knick-knacks. I paid $180 for it - which hurt - but it's an excellent pack. it fits very comfortably on your back, and there's no way it's going to cause any back strain. In fact, it's so nice for hiking around in that it's only drawback is that it doesn't integrate a place to hold a water bottle if you wanted to do a day hike / shoot with it on. Excellent for travel - especially if you want small carry-on luggage to contain your laptop and camera equipment. One other thing, it's design doesn't scream "i contain expensive digital electronic equipment". I've seen Tamron bags that have special "DIGITAL SLR blah blah" logos emblazoned on the back.

Sorry, gunzz. I always thought cameras could not be dropped, and then learned otherwise when they put me on painkillers after discharging me from Rex. Biiiiiig fan of insurance ever since.
11/5/2007 11:03:08 AM
^^Good to know. I try to not check anything when I fly, but now that I'm getting an SLR, I may need to invest in something just like that.(I've got a purse-like laptop bag right now, but it doesn't allow for too much else)
11/5/2007 11:08:30 AM
I got a similar backpack, it's fantastic. The lowepro label is descreet, and there could be textbooks in there for all you can tell. I also like the fat shoulder straps for distributing the weight, the buckles for the upper chest and stomach, and the ease of the zipper (a solid and smooth zip is important for me because I dive into the pack regularly in a hurry). Expensive as hell and worth every penny. My boss gave me a smaller version for a birthday gift which is equally as crucial. I'm not sure if this will apply to many other fields but in wedding photography I do need to dump the backpack and run with the body and a few lenses and cards if the reception is a tight area (plus it's less noisy during the ceremony to maneuver). The smaller pack is about the size of two bricks and holds three lenses or two lenses and a body, with a small side pocket for doodads. Typically my own boss doesn't wear one - she just got a nylon sock with a string to tote her extra lens around on her wrist, but that makes me cringe. One quick note on dumping your gear somewhere - I keep mine with the DJ's stuff. They usually pack expensive equipment and because they're not as mobile (they might leave the stand to hand the mike over during toasts or something) so if you rub elbows and they look trustworthy, you've got a good guard dog. It also helps in networking if the two of you recommend each other.

:-\My mom has asked for a complete christmas/birthday wishlist from me by Sunday. So far, I have- extra battery for my camera- 62mm UV filterI'm wanting a new camera bag for this, and maybe two? One to carry like a backpack, with all my crap (I've looked at the crumper mentioned above; at that price, it's not what I need. The Sinking Barge might work, though, but no one will buy it for me), and then one for just my camera, that I can throw in my larger purse - just enough room for the camera, and lens, for protective purposes. My birthday is 12/21, and as I get older, gifts get more expensive, and so $200+ gifts are not in bad taste, as folks can and do combine the two events. As I'm looking at lenses to ask for, I'm realizing how pitifully little I know about lenses, especially as far as types of glasses, brand, and sadly, range, both distance and aperture. I used to be excited by my 70-210 when I shot film What are good lenses to ask for (note: Working with two budgets for my list: the family without much money to spend, and the bf who is horribly excited for me to have this new camera, quite happily encourages me, and is, uh, not poor), in these: macro, close-ish? range, and general all-purpose?I know my mom WANTS to get me camera stuff, but other than the UV filter, she probably can't afford anything, but I need lots of stuff in the <$20 range. Suggestions?]

Prospero, so you didn't edit any of the pictures that you posted? Or just not the lighthouse pic? If not you've got some awesome photography skills. I'd love to be able to take pictures like that. I finally got some decent equipment (Nikon D80) but now I've got to spend some time working on my technique.
