Holy fucking shit...those passage rates are abysmal. I assume these law schools are just full of fucking idiots right now.

I'm frankly shocked that bar passage rates are so low... how the hell does that work? Passage rates for the three USMLE step exams in medical school are generally around 90% for US students and residencies loose their accreditation if their licensing exam pass rates fall below 80% for two years in a row.

Are law schools selling snake oil to that many unqualified people??

For the schools at the bottom...yes. I think the combination of the bad press they've been getting along with the fall-out from the recession and undergrads with average intelligence knowing they shouldn't be 6 figures in debt from the lowest tier of law schools has led to them scraping the bottom of the barrel for students. Students who are ill-equipped to pass the BAR exam.

What I'm trying to figure out is the schools at the top having lower passage rates as well. Those numbers for UNC, WFU, and Duke aren't exactly impressive. I thought they were normally in the 80s? I feel like I remember South Carolina saying they were making their BAR exam more difficult a few years back (thank god it was after I took it!), which would help explain USC's rate dropping from the 80s to the 60s. Did NC do the same?

And the BAR is a bitch. Obviously every state is different, but I just think it's incredibly difficult to study for. I did my best to study all of the basics, but when I took the exam, they asked a question from an area of law that they hadn't covered on the BAR exam in over 25 years (some random Probate shit). The guy who taught our BAR prep class on Probate day started off his lecture with, "if you're going to skip a day, this would be the day to skip...I'm sure the beach is nice right now". Luckily I did well on the rest of the exam, because I definitely bombed that section. There are just so many areas of law to have to memorize and apply...that it leaves a lot of room to fuck up.

For the last 6 years or so they have been increasing the required score to pass in NC.

Passing score changed from 346 to 350 in 2012, and has stayed there since.

UBE gets implemented next year. I think I was told that the passing score will be 266.
