That hasn't been her experience??? That's kind of the point
10/24/2014 12:53:30 PM
^^ don't you dare make this about race. this is about carolina taking banners down.
10/24/2014 12:57:28 PM
it should be clear at this point that racism is playing a role here."A bunch of black students taking courses about black people? That doesn't sound suspicious at all!"
10/24/2014 1:02:03 PM
everything doesn't have to be about race. come on now.
10/24/2014 1:04:37 PM
it doesn't...but this kind of is.Look, I want to see UNC punished just as much as anyone (and more importantly, I want them to suck for a long time so that State can finally have a moment in the sun). But let's keep it real, man. Football and Basketball players taking fake classes in Swahili? That's just embarrassing, man.
10/24/2014 1:09:51 PM
I mean, if I were about to make a racist joke....It would start with: "So, some basketball players were in Swahili class today......"And that's what makes this situation even worse, in my opinion.
10/24/2014 1:11:50 PM
Hansbrough was their dumbest student though
10/24/2014 1:21:53 PM
The Professor was pissed because he was in Swahili 3 but didn't even know how to say "Hello"
10/24/2014 1:25:37 PM
^^The point is that they threw one specific department completely under the bus in order to chase wins. That's basically admitting, as an institution, that they don't value the subject matter of that department. Yet they still offered the degree program.Clearly, they would not do that to their Law or Journalism departments, now would they?[Edited on October 24, 2014 at 1:30 PM. Reason : ]

lol
10/24/2014 1:34:14 PM
10/24/2014 1:35:11 PM
But they were specifically funneling retards athletes into that department, where they not?As in, "You're too stupid to take a real college course, so take these classes that aren't real."[Edited on October 24, 2014 at 1:38 PM. Reason : ]
10/24/2014 1:37:11 PM
so what? it's an easy major. that's not racist, that's just the state of all "social sciences".
10/24/2014 1:37:54 PM
I feel like if it were Women’s & Gender Studies instead, that there'd be more outrage about it than it has now. Says more about how loud women are when they complain though
10/24/2014 1:38:16 PM
If they had tried to put their athlete's through fake pre-med classes, they likely would have been found out much faster. It's not a matter of race, it's just making a believable back story.
10/24/2014 1:39:06 PM
^^ agreed agreed. which is a shame, b/c african and afro-american studies sounds like a much more legitimate field than women's studies.^ it's not even about that, i don't think. i think it's just about what already-easy department has a cooperative admin? i really don't think anyone in a smokey room somewhere said "let's start an AFAM department so that people will believe our basketball players' high(er) GPAs". if anything they should get credit for having the department at all, even if this happened.]
10/24/2014 1:39:19 PM
^^^And that's my point. If I were a real scholar in that field, I'd be fuckin' livid, man. They clearly chose the department that they felt would generate the least resistance. That's a total admission that they don't value that subject matter AT ALL. But they'll happily take a student's money and hand them a "degree" for their "work."That's some borderline, University of Phoenix shit, son.[Edited on October 24, 2014 at 1:42 PM. Reason : ]

I don't think you really understand my position, here.
10/24/2014 1:43:56 PM
i understand it, i just think you're being a little too sensitive, and a lot too conspiratorial.
10/24/2014 1:44:42 PM
but what about art history, dramatic art, music, studio art, american studies, asian studies, classics, comparative literature, english, germanic and slavic languages, Latin American studies, latino studies (apparently they're different), religous studies, sexuality studies, women's and gener studies, public relations, contemporary european studies, peace, war and defense, sustainability studies, etc?
10/24/2014 1:45:03 PM
Pretty sure you're applying that to me.I agree with you that they probably chose the major after the inception of said major. I just find it curious that they chose that major. And by curious, I mean, totally predictable.
10/24/2014 1:46:13 PM
as far as i understand the timeline, no one "chose" the AFAM department. they discovered easy independent studies, and in doing so found an admin that was very friendly to making things happen for athletes.as far as i understand, no one at the top level of UNC sat down and said "let's put a schmuck in the AFAM department so we can funnel students there." if that's what happened, then okay. but i don't think it is.
10/24/2014 1:48:07 PM
NOW GIVE MY UNC DEGREE!
10/24/2014 1:51:32 PM
From what I've read, the fraud sprouted organically in AFAM and was left to perpetuate because it benefitted athletics with keeping athletes eligible.I do believe that if it was another "important" major like journalism, law, etc., that UNC would have shut that shit down. That's not to stay that they may have replicated it in another "lesser" department but that's pure speculation.
10/24/2014 1:52:34 PM
That distinction is trivial, in my opinion.Whether or not it was sprang up organically is beside the point. The fact that they allowed it to continue in this department (when we all know they'd shut it down in a more distinguished department) is the real embarrassment.Oh, it's just Afro-studies. Nobody cares. It's not real. Keep it rollin'That's just as bad, in my opinion, as hand-picking that department from the onset. The sequence of events doesn't really change things.
10/24/2014 1:56:19 PM
I didn't listen much yesterday, but didn't I read that Adam & Joe kept saying that "This closes the book on the scandal"?Now Ovies is saying this: http://www.wralsportsfan.com/more-curiosity-not-closure-for-tar-heels/14111341/
10/24/2014 1:59:01 PM
^^ Look. I'm sure when they figured it out that they can get away with it in the first couple years...they continue on with it. Why change to a different department to raise suspension? Don't fix what is not broken.[Edited on October 24, 2014 at 1:59 PM. Reason : ^]
