This market is making my head spin!
9/18/2008 6:49:39 PM
^^aww somebody didn't buy
9/18/2008 6:53:34 PM
Should be another up day at least, at least for financials due to the ban on any shorts (not just naked shorts)
9/19/2008 6:38:16 AM
Looking good for some of mine in premarket at least, help ease the pain of the last few weeks, at least until the next bank decides to fail
9/19/2008 8:49:23 AM
Stay Home..o wait nm
9/19/2008 9:23:36 AM
mmmm up 6.5% to start the day, me likesdont really expect it to last though as lots of people are going to start selling immediately on the spikes, but any green day is a good day I suppose.[Edited on September 19, 2008 at 9:43 AM. Reason : .]

SEC shooting itself in the shorts?http://blogs.moneycentral.msn.com/topstocks/archive/2008/09/19/sec-shooting-itself-in-the-shorts.aspx
9/19/2008 9:46:05 AM
9/19/2008 9:54:49 AM
Yep, but if it gets some of my stocks back to even and I can cash out and wait for the next big dip then I am ok with that
9/19/2008 10:21:43 AM
Banning short selling - I understand that what was happening to Morgan and Goldman was insane but it boils my blood. Are they banning margin accounts This amounts to naked attempt to drive stock prices higher. If you think there is something wrong at Morgan and Goldman then take action there. Extend credit. Even call major institutions on the phone and ask them stop lending Morgan and Goldman. But, banning shorts on 799 stocks that is insane. On the other I am cautiously optimistic about TARP
9/19/2008 11:21:09 AM
can you not just buy puts instead for the next two weeks (or however long the ban is supposed to be in place for?)?[Edited on September 19, 2008 at 11:27 AM. Reason : nevermind.]
9/19/2008 11:25:15 AM
9/19/2008 11:45:36 AM
Are you going to cash out on the gain or hang on?
9/19/2008 12:04:20 PM
I've actually made a decent amount of change opening and closing Jan 2010 calls on Smith and Wesson as the stock price fluctuates.
9/19/2008 12:12:08 PM
cashed out the portion i bought at 103
9/19/2008 12:12:56 PM
made 600%+ on my GS OCT 185 calls this morning that I bought yesterday.
9/19/2008 12:18:46 PM
^ Fuck. Well played. Dick. Glad that I picked up some more VWO when it dipped.
9/19/2008 12:19:35 PM
thats gangstai've always wanted to buy long dated calls when the market pulls back, but never have the juevos
9/19/2008 12:20:10 PM
It's not that big when I only put $100 in it. I had that and Jan 2010 300 calls. Sold that for double. Again, only $100, so not really a big deal. I don't trust calls/puts enough to put any substantial money in them really.
9/19/2008 12:23:48 PM
shoullda bought some of this yesterday
9/19/2008 1:13:09 PM
yay for this bitty boost. i certainly needed it
9/19/2008 1:36:56 PM
economic stimulus round 6it's starting to get just a little annoying.
9/19/2008 1:42:05 PM
Let's see, I sold V at 64.11, and now it's at $70.SOMEONE REMIND ME TO DO THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT I THINK I SHOULD DO.It always happens like this -- I sell, it goes up. I buy, it goes down.Pisses me off beyond belief.
9/19/2008 2:28:45 PM
well, the jump/rally today is nothing you could have planned for. If you ask me, it's straight up market manipulation, because:1) The SEC putting an arbitrary, 2-week ban on a perfectly legitimate method of trading is completely skewing the trading values. The stock prices previously had the effects of short-selling built into their price. When you all of a sudden yank that effect out, temporarily, mind you, prices are going to jump all over the place. There's absolutely no telling what will happen when the ban expires on Oct 2. 2) The gov't is going nuts jumping in here and there to save certain companies, letting other companies die, buying bad debt, etc. There's nothing you can do to predict what the gov't will do next that might affect your stock.
9/19/2008 2:35:36 PM
yep, this is all very very bad in the long term.
9/19/2008 2:49:52 PM
I gambled and bought some wm at 2, how long should I hold it for?
9/19/2008 4:24:03 PM
+8.4% overall on the day
9/19/2008 4:41:36 PM
I keep thinking of that bald guy with the big glasses on the "GOLD" commercial.
9/19/2008 4:50:47 PM
Just wanted to say thanks to whomever it was that tipped me off to buy XTO. Got it at 45.20 two weeks ago and it's already up 22%.
9/19/2008 5:15:45 PM
^^^^ I'd say you should have gone ahead and unloaded it today, but who the hell knows in this market.Maybe Citi will buy it for $10, maybe it will go under $1 next week. All things seem possible. I'd take my profits and wait for next downswing though.[Edited on September 19, 2008 at 5:16 PM. Reason : ^]
9/19/2008 5:15:48 PM
i unloaded almost half of my energy plays throughout the dayi don't think this short squeeze is sustainable - but i was on the wrong side of the energy trade too long too
9/19/2008 6:57:45 PM
man...if everyone bought the TWW portfolio, they'd be up 2000000%...there's no losers on this board....
9/19/2008 10:55:35 PM
shit read back a few pages, you will see plenty of losers haha
9/20/2008 12:07:02 AM
Oh My God, are they serious?http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26803347
9/20/2008 7:29:51 PM
well jesus, i guess i should have just quit paying my mortgage
9/20/2008 8:00:36 PM
damned big gov'ti did see a 6% gain yesterdayfor whatever that's worth, since i don't need the money for a few decades.
9/21/2008 11:34:18 AM
All part of the decline of the US -- the government is too scared to let people who deserve it to face the consequences
9/21/2008 11:47:33 AM
Goldman and Morgan become bank holding companies...allowing them to take depositsNot sure if this will prevent the short term run on these 2, but will be beneficial long term...
9/21/2008 9:57:09 PM
Well I thought the rally would last through today at least, guess I was wrong
9/22/2008 10:21:52 AM
Yikes. After reading a bit of this thread it seems to me that quite a few of you have no business dabbling in the market. At all. This economy has still more to go before we see the light at the end of the tunnel. Do you think a bailout is going to be a magic cure all and we can go back to happier times (like, page 20 of the 07 thread?) whenever every stock that everyone picked made money?
9/22/2008 10:24:54 AM
9/22/2008 10:26:12 AM
It's just the language of some of the posters gives me the impression that they don't have a clue. You've been following, do I need to start collecting all the admissions of "bad luck" these guys have had this year in their stock picking?
9/22/2008 10:29:50 AM
Sure, a lot of people are new to investing, but no better way to learn than trial by fire. I don't see anybody losing more than what is essentially play money here.Better to get burned in your early 20's than in your 40's or later. Feel free to contribute whatever wisdom you claim to have, but if you're just here to snipe at people, there's a section called chit chat where you'll be welcomed.
9/22/2008 10:39:29 AM
Snipe? I'll contribute when I can. I'm sorry if I stuck salt in your stock market loss wound. I humbly apologize.
9/22/2008 10:42:42 AM
I dont think many of us expect this as a cure all, however for some of us this slight rally is allowing us to recover on a few of our stocks and get out even so we can actually have some liquid funds to use when this thing does continue heading back down.
9/22/2008 10:48:09 AM
oh, another Chance alias.
9/22/2008 10:52:10 AM
jesus not again
9/22/2008 11:01:05 AM
i'll be up on the street all week - i wonder if the mood will be considerably different
