Manchin (and a few others) might as well wear Trump 2024 shirts. 2022 is awful close if they let McConnell block everything
1/25/2021 11:27:49 PM
Put the bill out and make Manchin and Sinema stand up and saying they AR holding it hostage
2/4/2021 2:32:34 PM
I just want the Democrats to use their brains they love so much and realize that if you're going to means-test something, you're just going to fuck things up with it. keep it simple and make it universal.
2/8/2021 10:58:19 PM
2/9/2021 8:16:24 AM
Let's do both!
2/9/2021 9:23:32 AM
The Dems glacial pace on covid relief is going to make me say for the first time that this impeachment might have negative consequences. It's insane they didn't get relief done first. Not to say they shouldn't be doing impeachment now, but Covid relief should have been done in January!Republicans can now hit them that impeachment is more important than covid
2/9/2021 11:36:38 AM
My portfolio is up like double, why does anyone need relief? They could have put money in the market in March like everyone I know.
2/9/2021 11:52:13 AM
^^the organizing resolution for the new Senate wasn’t passed until Feb 3rd. Hard to pass COVID relief while McConnell still holds the Senate gavel.
2/9/2021 2:05:36 PM
Fair point. Pass it on the 4th. Pass it tomorrow. Get the thing done. The senate is a very powerful institution and they've known they needed to get this done since the GA elections, find a way to get it done and do it before the impeachment. The "impeachment is a distraction" is dumb but it will be hit home if it comes before relief regardless of whether the two of are tied together.

2/9/2021 7:32:30 PM
^^ not sure if you’re a fan or not, but I recently started listening to Chris Hayes’ podcast “Why Is This Happening?”, and in last weeks episode about the history of the filibuster, he talked with a former senate chief of staff about senate procedures/rules and how difficult it is to pass legislation quickly long story short, it’s way tougher than you’d think
2/9/2021 10:08:21 PM
December:
2/9/2021 10:26:09 PM
in December, senate leadership had been in power for 10 yearscurrent leadership has been in power for 6 daysI agree that the quicker the better is obviously preferable, but I don’t think it’s quite as easy as we’d like to thinkin the podcast episode that I referenced, they discussed that the only thing needed to filibuster/require a 60-vote threshold is an email from a staffer essentially requesting more time before the vote[Edited on February 9, 2021 at 11:00 PM. Reason : it’s insane]
2/9/2021 10:34:54 PM
Maybe you're right just seems insane you can impeach easier than pass a relief billAnd is anyone actually filibustering anything? I thought the whole point of using reconciliation was to avoid that. And if they are why not hold a cloture vote and put the Republicans on the record against relief? If Republicans are stalling you, make it obvious.
2/9/2021 11:05:32 PM
again, in trying to learn more about how congress works, it certainly seems like it isn’t nearly as easy as we’d like to think it isI wasn’t trying to insinuate that the filibuster has anything to do with the relief bill, just using it as an example of something I thought I knew a little bit about but not really. like it’s insane that all it takes is one email from a staffer. I didn’t know that. did you?
2/9/2021 11:12:41 PM
Yea i get it man, I'm no senate expert, I just bet mitch McConnell would have a bill on the table by now if he had something he wanted done. Maybe I'm way off base. Democrats should be doing everything in their power to push this forward and if there are things in the way they should be talking loudly about them and how they are the reasons this isn't done. Also if the rules are this cumbersome they should change them.[Edited on February 10, 2021 at 12:06 AM. Reason : The filibuster should be gone anyway but Manchin and Sinema don't want to be blamed for closed votes]
2/10/2021 12:05:12 AM
The 10 way competition for worst Dem senator gets a new competitor
2/12/2021 12:47:40 PM
The only explanation for her career is some kind of brain damagehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyrsten_Sinema#Early_political_involvement
2/12/2021 1:00:44 PM
^She voted her conscience and did the right thing today, so +1 to herJamie Raskin did a fantastic job and anyone who says otherwise doesn't know fuck all about how shitty American politics work.
2/13/2021 5:34:08 PM
Giving simena props for voting to convict is an awful low bar
2/13/2021 5:44:32 PM
I mean the bar is on the ground, so I don't know why you're trying to compare apples with kryptonite. She's got more in common with Romney than AOC, but acting like she's some huge threat to the Senate is a little dramatic.
2/13/2021 5:55:58 PM
That's a very bad sign for Dem credibility if your bar for a Dem senator is on the ground. And she isn't a threat to the senate, but she is a massive roadblock to passing anything useful.
2/13/2021 6:09:48 PM
It's a worse sign that you claim to be a progressive, yet you're trying to sow in-party fighting because you thought that the Senate should have prolonged a sham impeachment trial.I'm glad that most Americans don't view the world through as narrow of lens as you do sometimes. They are pissed about Trump, but way more worried about COVID relief. Congress people going on vacation is a symptom of a dysfunctional branch of government, and that's not a solely Dem issue.[Edited on February 13, 2021 at 6:37 PM. Reason : Biden hasn't even been in office for a month FFS]
2/13/2021 6:36:27 PM
Maybe the senate should have done covid relief first then, like I said in this very thread. Also, calling witnesses wouldn't have delayed covid bc they are now on recess. Calling witnesses would be gave required them to cancel that recess and stay in session. And lol at sow in party fighting. I'm sure my tww posts are going to tear things apart
2/13/2021 6:52:16 PM
Everything I've read indicates that the GOP has held COVID relief hostage because of impeachment, and given the way the GOP just voted to acquit, I kinda have to think that maybe it's slightly more difficult to ram it through than you're thinking it is.Can you link me a source that proves what you're claiming? I'd be happy to read it.[Edited on February 14, 2021 at 11:21 PM. Reason : .]
2/14/2021 11:19:53 PM
You gotta read some articles written since the senate flipped. Google budget reconciliation. Also until 2022 anytime you read that the GOP is stonewalling something, you should mentally change it to read that Manchin and Sinema are allowing GOP to stonewall. A united Dem congress can pass almost anything they want.

God damn, Manchin is such a festering turd. Once I’m past the initial frustration and anger (over the stimulus and his selective problems with appointees), it really emphasizes how big of a miss it was to not end Susan Collins’, Joni Ernst’s, and especially Thom Tillis’ careers in 2020. It’s a massive failure that we have to count on his vote for anything period.

I don’t claim to understand the rules of budget reconciliation, but technically this is the fault of the Budget Cmtes for not crafting the Min wage language to squeeze through the rules. Bernie Sanders is chair of the Senate cmte. I don’t really blame him because he fought hard to even have it considered and even went on a mini-hype tour to lay the expectation that it would be included. Unfortunately, a Min wage hike seems to be outside the bounds of what reconciliation allows.
2/26/2021 5:17:24 AM
2/26/2021 9:09:01 AM
^^If it's the fault of anything outside of manchin, it's the cbo for inaccurately giving a bad/neutral score when it should INCREASE revenue and decrease spending. But despite all that the senate dems plus Harris can pass the bill as is if they want to, but at least one of them doesn't want to. And bc that same person is also against nuking the filibuster, it will never pass. At best we'll get something severely crippled.
2/26/2021 10:15:51 AM
The VP has 100% power over what is allowed through budget reconciliation. The parliamentarian is only an advisor.
2/26/2021 10:52:15 AM
Yea I'd love to see her do that and have Schumer put it to a vote, but so many Dem senators are so shitty that i bet it wouldn't work. At least then we'd know the cowards and traitors I guess.

Then why the fuck would you want that??

Ok I predict a 4 way, and hope trump repubs don’t get 33% and beat the other 32% and below candidates. In 33% example, trump haters repub is 17
