actually, from that same document, it says that in 2012:

Quote :
"USA counts as a Division I game on opponents’ schedule towards bowl game eligibility"

would kinda suck for a lot of schools if it didn't since they play a full FBS schedule next year (they'll only play one FCS game)

The difference between Sendek and TOB is that NC State football doesn't have historical relevance. There are no distant National Championships that fans can point to and say that "there is no reason we can't be at that level again." If TOB can just get to consistent 8-9 win seasons (like he did at BC and comparable to Sendek's NCAA streak) and retire leaving the State coaching job attractive to others then he will literally be one of State's greatest football coaches (at the very least on par with Dick Sheridan). However, if we "force" him out after consecutive bowl appearances (assuming he makes one next year, because if he doesn't then he needs to be gone) then we will have a coaching search similar to Sidney's.

No way, The E's facts are always spot-on. We're the only team in the nation that doesn't come out blazing our guns.

The celling is quite lower for us in football than in basketball, considering we're in the worst of the major conferences and we have never been even close to the National Championship let alone a major bowl.

That's a big "if." At BC, he was in a crappier conference. So, he has a ways to go before he even approaches Sendekian levels of middling (or Amato middling, for that matter). Several key assumptions that we had about TOB coming in didn't hold: he would be able to recruit better at NCSU and he would bring offensive line excellence from BC.

Which is why TOB is a maddening coach - the ACC isn't full of world beaters; if we could assemble a half decent coaching staff we'd have a shot at Orange Bowls. Hell, Wake managed to do it, we should be able to also.

spencer: correct, but they are still listed as in the transitional D-1AA classification and with Citadel on the schedule, I think we will still need to finish at least 7-5 for bowl eligibility, but it better not come to that again.

we're not the only school in the ACC to realize this, or the only one trying. there's only so many good football coaches out there mane.

it's worth risking it all going for it in basketball. not as much in football. tom o'brien is fine, and there's no reason to fire him before his contract is up.

Does anyone have the audio coming out of halftime of the UMD game? He was asked by the sideline reporter if his players were worried being down so much and he confidently stated that they were not worried about anything.

For real, I'm not even an Archer fan. Look at the job he has done once we were healthy on D.

Leading the nation in INTs! Leading the ACC in fumbles caused/recovered. 3rd in the ACC in sacks. 4th in the ACC in total defense.

As for Bible, we looked our best all year the last two games by finally opening the playbook a little bit and running a faster tempo offense. Hopefully he learned from that. Well that and the WRs started catching balls again. (Here's looking at you Bryan)

Our D gave up 41 points to a maryland team in a little over a half. MD scored 44 points over their prev 3 games.

You can throw out the BC win as their offense is terrible and our success vs clemson had just as much to do with clemson sucking complete ass as our team playing an excellent game.

They both suck ass. Yet, TOB somehow looks at them every year and decides not to replace them. This might be a late career thing. Why change everything up when you are nearing the end?

7 points off a fumble return.
7 points off an interception return.
7 points off a drive of only 30 yards because of another fumble.

I wouldn't say the defense "gave up" those points. Maryland only had 3 decent drives the entire game.

yeh, our D really gave up 21 points and did get run over a little more than they should have in the first half and first drive of the second half. While not a spectacular game, they had 1.5 spectacular quarters; enough so to keep the offense in the game.

It's hard to play defense when your offense is turning the ball over in the red zone, as we saw against Clemson (except the other way around).

Defense in college is all about momentum, and once we had given them 21 points, I'm sure our guys weren't as in it as they should have been. The defense has played well when we're up on a team, usually, at least since getting the starters back. I'm perfectly happy with them, knowing that 41 points in the last game wasn't their fault at all.

Even the Ravens D in 2000, which took a pitiful offense to the Super Bowl and won it, gave up 36 points to a lesser team and over 20 points in multiple games that season. You can't expect to shut down every team.

We shouldn't have been down to Maryland just like we shouldn't have beat Clemson. Shit happens people, all that matters is how you respond, and I'd say we responded pretty damn well.

maybe, but Maryland WILL fire a guy the season he wins ACC Coach of the Year , much less who went to a bowl game and won it 2 of the past 3 years.

To be fair, there was a really really short field on one of the TDs. And we held Maryland below their average for yards and created 5 turnovers.

It wasn't our best effort, but they played REALLY well in the 2nd half.

I'm still on the fence with TOB. He obviously can't be let go after this year. As long as we don't have a really really shitty season, I say we keep him until his contract is up. Hopefully he can keep up the 7-9 win seasons, continue to build a solid program, retire, and leave our next coach with a solid team.

If we fire him before his contract is up it will severely hurt our chances of getting anyone better. We need to show support for our coaching staff or no one will want to work here.

Keep DC
Fire OC

Except for the Florida State game, our defense has been fantastic the entire second half of the season...and now that I look back at it, FSU also only had 3 scoring drives of 40+ yards.

if we went for an up and comer, we would just be a stepping stone...TOB is a good coach and has a lot of experience...he's not going anywhere so get used to it and support him.

i don't get all the hate either...we're 16-9 in the last 2 seasons w/ a chance to be 17-9...how is that not successful at State from where we were when he took over?

Is it his style? Dabo Swinney is fun to watch but I honestly get exhausted watching him.

I mean the guy wins games...yes we blow some games...but that's college football...we also have won some games that we should never have won too

He runs a clean program w/ great discipline and he graduates his players.

^I don't think it's as black and white as just looking at the W/L records. It's more of the route it took to get there. We started off the season very poorly. Sure, we had our share of injuries and we were breaking in a new QB. Interesting breakdown of his time here:
2007: Started 1-5, finished 5-7
2008: Started 2-6, finished 6-7 (bowl loss to Rutgers, won 4 in a row just to become bowl eligible)
2009: 5-7, we were bad all year (with the exception of 1 or 2 games)
2010: 9-4, we were good all year (with the exception of 1 or 2 games)
2011: Started 2-3, finished 7-5 (won 4 of 6 to become bowl eligible)

In 3 of TOB's 5 years, we've started off terrible and has to rally late in the season (twice to become bowl eligible...in '07 we lost in the finale vs MD and failed to become bowl eligible). In '09 we just sucked all year. In '10 we were pretty good all year (except the Clemson and ECU games).

I think people just get tired of the slow/poor starts and late season rallies.

Not this year, this year we're pretty much tied with the Big East. At least according to one of the few objective measures for conference strength.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbc11.htm?loc=interstitialskip

Not that that's entirely accurate, of course. And the ACC has a lot more potential to move up than the Big East, but we kinda blew it a few years ago when the ACC had enough mid-to-high level talent to be the second best conference out there and then just kinda started sliding back again.
