i get that Megadeth has been sorta controversial and "love 'em or hate 'em" for a long time--mostly due to Dave Mustaine's personality, in my opinion--and I expected some silly metal-hipster comments, but "Megadeth was never metal"? WTF? If there was a metal hall of fame, they'd be inducted in the first round without even requiring discussion.

I mean, they are one of the "Big 4". Hell, I think they're probably a solid #2 out of the "Big 4" (obviously Metallica has the lead spot locked--although despite Metallica being my favorite, Megadeth has put our a lot more and a lot more consistent metal. Metallica did 4.5 albums worth of killer shit--it's just that it's the best metal ever made.)

i always wanted to like megadeath, but (as was noted) his vocals are just too terrible. the less he sings, the more i enjoy any given song of theirs. squarely at the bottom of the big 4.

These guys brought their huge rigs into school kids records on hillsborough street for a day show at the first hopscotch and played one of the loudest and slowest doom sets i've ever seen. It was pretty wicked.

See, I view a lot of what they do (mid-career) to be crossing back and forth between metal and "edgy rock", as you put it (and in some cases, just pretty straightforward rock).

(as opposed to Megadeth, which I view as primarily pretty archetypal, if there is such a thing, for the metal genre. Some of their post-Rust In Peace stuff teeters into the territory of "edgy rock", I'd agree, but even then, more metal than not.)

I still just am baffled by your claim of Megadeth having never been metal. That's like saying that the Rolling Stones or Bruce Springsteen were never rock, or Merle Haggard or Alan Jackson were never country, or Jim Croce was never folk. I'm curious as to the rationale.
