the difference between you and me is that I don't bring a sports fan mentality to civic life. i can look at "my team" and say where we screwed up, and I can look at the "other team" and say when they got it right.

as it stands, I would like to see what 60 minutes came up with and cancelling/delaying it was probably a mistake, and if the suggestion that it was cancelled because somebody in the trump admin told bari or anybody else to do it, then that would definitely be a mistake.

I don’t think it’s more complicated than that. Racism was THE crow bar trump used to get into politics (blabbing on Fox News about Obama not being American). Then just over the past few days, JD Vance gives a speech whose main brunt was modern day Neo Nazi talking points, and he affirmed that people like Nick Fuentes were welcome in their tent.

Any policies that might be republican coded now that I like would be easier to sell democrats on, than trying to find some compromise with MAGA Nazis.

we ultimately need the fever to break among both the fringe right and the fringe left. i thought after biden won in 2020 that we would be on the path back to healing ourselves, but the 2024 election rattled everybody up again and trump's victory ensured the madness will continue on both sides for another 4 years. hopefully by 2030 we'll finally be in a permanent post-trump era, people will be exhausted from 2 decades of wasted time, and we can spend the next 2 decades trying to make 2050 great for our kids.

i didn't bother to look for this earlier, but here is bari's response to 60 minutes staff. i'll reserve judgement for a while to see if they do keep working on it and ultimately air the story.

I’m not sure what you mean by this. There have been many statistical analyses on this over the past few years and racial resentment is not only the top predictor of if someone will votes for Trump, and the correlation factor dwarfs other factors.

I dive headfirst into these comment threads on Bluesky and the attitude is changing. I think republicans are actually screwing up here by pushing for a zero regulation ecosystem. If you want people to embrace a scary new technology it must be sensibly regulated and very visibly… that’s another thread though. Also ties into ending billionairism. People are tired of seeing billionaires wall hack our economy and they see ai as an extension of this.

Let’s say you have 100 voters, 10 are racists and 8 vote for Trump and 2 vote Harris. Does that mean the rest that voted Trump are racist or care? It’s predictive of the 10 racists but tells you fuck all about the other group.

the truth is we have no idea what will or could happen should machines ever develop the kind of capabilities required to pursue anything akin to "enslaving humanity", let alone whether they would, or be successful at it. we have zero data points. only our imagination. and our lizard brain fear instincts. it's all speculation at this point. there is indeed value in letting ourselves imagine the worst case scenarios. so that we can try to steer ourselves away from them and toward the best case scenarios. but it's still just speculation.
