Not really, a similar incident happened to a friend's motorcycle a few years back.

His motorcycle was stolen near NCSU and found it listed a few months later on craigslist and setup a similar sting operation with friends and got the local PD in Durham to help out. They had 6 guys including SWAT part of the sting cause the two perps had previous violent history and had outstanding gun violations.

Convinced the guy to meet him at a gas station, when he showed, 3 cars pinned him in the second he dismounted, but apparently the guys were a little more crafty and changed out the frame. Everything else, engine, plastics, even the ignition, were all original; with that snafu, my friend had to wait an extra few months to process the bike before he could officially claim it. The police raided the perps home address and found 3 other stolen bikes with tons of other spare parts, probably stolen as well.



I had another friend down in Florida that had the same thing happen to him, but instead of seeing his stolen bike on craigslist, he actually saw some dude riding it months later at a motorcycle club meet. He befriended the dude and other members of his biker crew and said they met there every week. He took pictures of the bike, including the vin and made sure it was his and of course it was.

A week later, he returned with him and two friends in two separate cars and did their own sting operation as well. When the dude arrived, he called the cops and waited, however they never responded after 30 mins and drove a block away to get a local cop parked on the other side of the shopping complex to help him catch the dude. The cop starts to roll into the parking lot and that's when the perp and his buddies started to gear up and roll out; with the chance of him slipping away my friend and his buddy drove straight at the perp to box him in. He tried to squeeze out of the way, but my friend's buddy in his SUV rammed him slightly, which ended up pinning him under his bike.

The cop rolls up a few seconds later and books him and his buddies. My friend, who had prove of ownership of the vin, rode his stolen bike home that day. He later sued the perp for damages to the stolen property and was awarded like 10 grand. Not sure if he ever collected.

No...It's just a "I'm overseas and need to sell this fast; send me a deposit/payment" scam. Dozens of these pop up every day on Raleigh Craigslist and they usually get flagged down in less than 30 minutes. If you see one hit the "prohibited" button.

They include the e-mail address in the picture rather than in the text of the ad so that you can't google search it and see the same ad in 20 different locations all around the country.
