LOL...not a lot of swirling lights going on so far

Not sure where else to put this, but with Democrats sweeping the Wake County Commissioners you should see a transit referendum on the ballot in 2015 or 2016.

What ever happened to death and taxes?Wasn't the original plan to open around when Joule did? I often forget about it but someone mentioned it this weekend. I feel like in 2014 someone stated it'd open late that year but I can't tell there has been any movement.

February or March. The whole design had to be overhauled to fit four kitchens.

what's everybody's take on the Dix news?
1/12/2015 6:02:20 PM
I feel like I've heard of a deal, but I haven't had a chance to see any actual plan.Unnerves me a bit, cause we (NC State) need some of that land so we can look through 2050-2100.
1/12/2015 8:03:30 PM
sounds like everyone is happy with it (both city and state) so it sounds like a good dealThe highlights:* state keeps liability on old land fill* state leases department of health services space for 10 years for $1 a year (to give them time to move the department to RTP or somewhere else)* state has option to lease other space for 25 years at competitive rate* state allows easement for greenway to connect pullen to dix* city has until the end of the year to figure out how to finance the deal (potentially bonds)

http://www.newsobserver.com/2015/01/22/4496893/big-man-of-downtown-raises-alarm.htmlGreg Hatem says downtown is unlivable.
1/22/2015 9:56:21 PM
He's got a point; living dead center downtown seems like it would be a pretty big pain. It's not going to be quiet at any point in the future, there's no putting that genie back in the bottle, at least not without squelching the nightlife. If you want to live in relative piece, live in a high rise or move to a neighborhood. I live in Cameron Park and it stays pretty quiet. [Edited on January 22, 2015 at 10:05 PM. Reason : ]
1/22/2015 10:03:57 PM
I get his point, but 99% of the housing in the city is in quiet single use residential areas, so is it really that big of a deal if one small part of downtown is not like that? Realistically what is the market for family housing on Fayetteville Street anyway no matter how quiet it is?
1/22/2015 11:31:53 PM
the ridiculous part of ^^^that is that Hatem and his properties have played a large part in creating that scene in downtown Raleigh.[Edited on January 23, 2015 at 4:57 PM. Reason : ^^^]

Established bar and restaurant owner wants to hamper competition.
1/23/2015 5:11:57 PM
i feel like bars with outdoor/sidewalk areas are the main problem, they should limit how late people are allowed to be outside (or maybe compromise and try it on weeknights at least)?
1/23/2015 5:25:43 PM
Living in the center of downtown and complaining about noise is completely ridiculous. Especially when a bar you own is one of the biggest offenders.
1/26/2015 5:47:15 PM
he also had the ability to stop his restaurant from becoming what it's become (on weekends, at least)

he (or whoever manages the Times) was fine with something as small as changing the music as soon as a different crowd started showing up. I don't know if they still do it, but that place turned into Club Raleigh Times around 10 on weekends with the playing of dubstep

better a flat fee than an hourly rate
5/26/2015 7:45:59 PM
I'd rather see an hourly rate with a maximum nightly/daily fee.
5/26/2015 10:00:12 PM
I like $5 being the max...I'm more of a "let's leave the car downtown" kinda guy
5/26/2015 10:49:07 PM
Though is it $12 total for "special events?" That's pretty pricey[Edited on May 26, 2015 at 10:52 PM. Reason : and I'd expect them to be liberal about their interpretation of the word "special"]
5/26/2015 10:51:34 PM
5/27/2015 5:13:07 PM
Seriously. Pay $5 to park and then likely have to go get your car the next day, or just uber both ways for $RhodeIsland and keep your car at home.
5/27/2015 8:41:29 PM
i mean if you are staying out all night until 2ish then yes, 5 bucks is a pretty good deal... and chances are uber would be much more expensive than to go home with your SO in an uber car and just go pick up the car in the AM... don't they have surge pricing around closing time?

I also had a friend of a friend tell me that the boycott thing hurts the business. She was trying to make me feel like a dick about it saying that all it does is hurt the employees and not Hatem. While that may be true, I still feel like it makes a statement about what downtowners want.
6/15/2015 4:41:38 PM
6/15/2015 5:41:31 PM
perhaps a good solution would be to stop buying food at Raleigh times, then. This way the servers still get their money and #hatemgonnahate gets < 30% food sales, which means he no longer gets outdoor seating.
6/16/2015 6:49:50 AM
Raleigh Times outside is actually an issue, I think it's an example of one of the places that needs to be fixedIf Raleigh Times is slowing down I wouldn't blame all of that on a boycott, their clientele has been changing and there are a lot of people now who avoid that place
6/16/2015 8:12:07 AM
Times is fine during the week, but douchebag central on the weekends. But that can be said for ~75% of downtown bars.
6/16/2015 5:49:59 PM

Rendering of the Dillon Supply Co. building. 17 stories with 35,000 sf of retail at the ground level, a bunch of office space, and 300 apartments. Demo starts next month and it's supposed to finish the same time as Union Station in late 2017.I can hit it with a rock from my condo. Probably going to be loud as hell in the mornings but at least my property value is going to go way up (I hope)

Some say downtown Raleigh sports arena could be good fit for professional soccerhttp://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/counties/wake-county/article51945445.htmlI hope this never happens. I like the tailgate culture we have in Raleigh when it comes to concerts and sports.
