Just ordered a 64 gig, Non 3g model yesterday.......should be here in a month

I got one of those incase plush covers the other day. Guess its made for the original but it fits ipad2 + smart cover fine.

http://techland.time.com/2011/05/16/seagates-battery-powered-hard-drive-streams-directly-to-ipads/anyone hear about this?seems pretty cool
5/17/2011 12:16:33 AM
That writeup is a bit misleading, IMO. It kind of makes it sound like you can just buy that hard drive and your iPad magically gains 500 GB of storage space.
5/17/2011 9:57:39 AM
can you be more specific? i think people realize they have to carry this around with them and link into it to access the files on there.i dont understand what is misleading
5/17/2011 11:02:22 AM
You have to use a special app to access the things on the drive, and you can only access the drive's contents in that app. It makes it sound like when the drive is on your iOS device just thinks it has more storage you can access through the iPod app, etc.[Edited on May 17, 2011 at 11:25 AM. yeah, definitely not worth lugging that around. Not sure what people are doing to take up some much damn space on the iPad. I have a 32 gig model and well over 200 apps, dozens of books, and Im not even close to filling it up... are people putting all their music or something on it? multiple movies? I just don't see it as that type of device, maybe Im the weird one.
5/17/2011 4:08:23 PM
yea i don't use mine to store photos, video, or music, so i got the 16gig model. i've just got apps and books mainly. if i want to watch a movie or something i'll upload it then remove it when i'm done.but i'm sure there are people who sync their photo/music libraries to it.
5/17/2011 4:13:59 PM
yeah, I have most of my photos on there, but I do the same thing with movies, upload them, watch them, then delete them when done.
5/17/2011 4:22:57 PM
It would obviously be preferable if you could have the space to sync your music/photos/movies, that way they're always with you. I doubt it would cost Apple much to make them hold a lot more space, they just keep it small to squeeze an extra $100 out of you.

The Wired app just got updated with the in-app subscription option. The cool thing is if you're a subscriber of the print mag, you can enter in your subscription info and now you get free copies of the iPad version. I signed up a few months ago for a $12 for 4 years subscription deal so now I get the next 3 1/2 years on the iPad plus access to the last 6 issues. Now I need to just get them to stop mailing me the print issues cause I'm surely not gonna read them now.
5/27/2011 9:51:23 PM
From reading around, it seems like they still haven't quite resolved the backlight bleeding issue. I'm just kinda waiting until it's safe to swap my launch unit. The bleeding is very distracting when watching video, and I have my brightness set below 50%. I read somewhere that they were switching from LG to Samsung panels, so I'm hoping the fixed units start hitting stores soon.
5/28/2011 10:40:00 AM
These guys figured out a way to turn the iPad 3G into a fully functional cell phone.
5/28/2011 4:10:34 PM
I'd do that with mine just to walk around a public place talking on the ipad.
5/28/2011 4:26:51 PM
Anybody know someone who can repair ipads? My dad has an ipad 1, he says it just recently started causing issues when it starts heating up. He says it works fine when he uses it indoors, but when he is outdoors and uses it for a little bit it will start getting lines across the screen across the screen until eventually it is unusable. He said he brought it to the Apple store and they said all they could do was replace it for 250$ and wouldn't repair it.

In case anyone was wondering (like I was) how the split keyboard handles getting out of the way of items on a page, it's pretty much so up to the user to move the keyboard from in front of buttons and stuff. I guess I was maybe hoping you could click through that middle section or something. For some reason that was the first thing I thought of when I saw the demo, and one of the first things I tried in iOS 5.
6/7/2011 12:47:24 AM
They STILL don't allow retina enabled iPhone apps to run at full resolution on the iPad. I honestly cannot think of a good reason why not.]
6/7/2011 1:21:58 AM
so they can also sell you their crappy, overpriced, lower resolution "HD" copies.Nothing irks me more than having to buy the same app twice.[Edited on June 7, 2011 at 7:38 AM. Reason : d]
6/7/2011 7:37:58 AM
I mean, I knew some mindless hater would say that, but I just don't see the point in banging you another $2 for an iPad version of an iPhone app and then turning around and offering your new OS (which can be installed on as many computers as you own) for $29. Or turning a previously priced $99 a year service into a much more full featured one and making it free. Or not charging a fee to upgrade older iPads/iPods to the new iOS. If Apple really was such a money grubbing/ding you for every dime they can get company like some people seem to insist they are, then it seems like they would be consistent across the board with it.
6/7/2011 12:43:12 PM
^^^because people are still buying the apps?
6/9/2011 7:15:12 PM
There's a lot more money to be milked from the iPad/iPhone customers than their is from their desktop offerings. They sell roughly 8 million computers a year. By contrast, they sold almost 12 million iPads over the last two quarters. On top of that, saying that it's $30 for a "new OS" is a bit of an overstatement.Apple pretty much had no choice but to start offering their cloud services for free, because everyone else has started going that way as well: Microsoft has Skydrive, Amazon has their MP3 cloud service, Google has theirs, etc. They're in it for the money. They'd be dumb not to be, but they know what their cash cows are. Get people to fall in love with the app on their iPhone. When they realize how terrible it looks on their iPad, they'll get the iPad version.

Turns out the code for the iPad version of the Facebook app was accidentally included in the iPhone version that was updated a few days ago. If you're jailbroken, you can download the iPhone version of Facebook and then download a tweak called FaceForward from Cydia that enables the iPad version.

does the keyboard dock work with ipad 2? i am planning to get the ipad 2 soon and would like to use it
7/26/2011 12:59:14 PM
^ yep. may have a little extra room behind it but it will work. You can put a piece of cardboard behind it or something if you'd like to take stress off the port.
7/26/2011 6:39:09 PM
thanks
7/27/2011 8:56:33 AM
I'm probably going to be buying an iPad 2 in the next few weeks. Should I wait until September to see what new model (if any) is released? Also, does the NCSU bookstore sell them with a student discount?
8/2/2011 11:20:27 PM
Chances of a new one this year are extremely slim. On the off chance they do, you'll have a few weeks between announcement and release where resale won't be affected much (lose $50-75). As for the discount, Apple doesn't offer an education discount on the iPad and I don't think State does any discount of their own.
8/3/2011 7:18:06 AM
Thanks for the info. I've been reading on several sites that they may soon release a new model of the iPad 2 with an HD display and that it likely won't be an iPad 3 - more along the lines of an iPad 2 HD or Pro.Unless somebody has a good reason to get more storage, I'll probably just go get the 16G in the next day or so. A few guys at work received them unexpectedly as gifts and I've been really wanting one for about a week now... now I have to fit in.
8/3/2011 11:40:13 AM
Yeah I'm holding out for a retina type display. I feel like it's 1999 all over again every time I use an iPad.
8/3/2011 11:48:16 AM
With the tax free weekend being this weekend, it sounds like a good time to just bite the bullet and get one. I don't think I want to be in a line in any of the stores - ordering online will be nice.
8/3/2011 12:30:11 PM
i somehow put a small dent on one of my corners on my ipad 2 the other night...the aluminum backing is pretty weak
8/3/2011 1:32:58 PM
That sucks. I've also read in several places that the back is prone to scratches because the new cover Apple put out doesn't protect the back at all.
8/3/2011 2:49:23 PM
^ the apple smart cover is pretty much useless on its own in terms of protection.you are supposed to get this as well if using the smart cover:http://www.amazon.com/Speck-Products-SmartShell-Lightweight-Ultra-Thin/dp/B004X69VRK
8/6/2011 6:55:42 PM
^That's pretty much exactly what I've been looking for. Between that and the smart cover I think I'll have what I'm looking for. They're all so damn expensive though.
8/7/2011 4:40:25 PM
thinking about getting an Ipad 2, but i know nothing about them. They come with 3G currently, is there any word about a 4G ipad coming out?also, do i have to pay for the 3G service if i were to get one?[Edited on August 11, 2011 at 11:01 AM. Reason : service]
8/11/2011 11:01:21 AM
Ipad 2 comes in wifi only and wifi+3g. 16, 32 and 64 gb respectively. If you choose wifi+3g you can choose to pay for the service when you need it. You pay a month at a time, but make sure you cancel it if you don't intend to use it the next month because their auto renew is a bit wacky. I got the 32 gb verizon and love it. I know Verizon is not as fast as ATT but the coverage is amazing. Hope that helped.I don't see a 4g model of the Ipad coming out any time soon. I would assume the next product cycle of ipad and iphone will include LTE tech, but not now. [Edited on August 11, 2011 at 11:21 AM. Reason : 4g]
8/11/2011 11:20:44 AM
Anybody been using GarageBand for iPad as an audio sketchbook? I want to use one for that purpose, but don't know whether to get 16 or 32 GB. I won't need a lot of space for non-garageband things, but will be recording a lot of real audio (as opposed to the virtual instruments, which use MIDI and take up virtually no space). Any insights appreciated.
8/16/2011 12:47:20 AM
i've been playing around with my buddies iPad 2. They are pretty cool... i wasn't sold before, but now i am.I can't shell out 500 for a new one though.
