As a person of south Asian descent that was born in a Caribbean country that most people think of as part of Latin America, and who’s typically mistaken as a Latino, I’ve checked all sorts of boxes in my high school and college years— the boxes don’t make sense when being asked for your “identity” for a diaspora identity.

In 8th grade, when teachers pre-fill your end of grade tests, my teacher put me as “multiracial”. when they called out if anyone needed corrections, I looked at the options Asian or Other and awkwardly said out loud I should be “other,” having never been to Asia. The whole class chuckled

It’s most likely he was being cheeky because he technically is African American but I also don’t think race is a clear cut concept for a 17 year old immigrant from various backgrounds. I was younger than Mamdani was when he first came to America and still didn’t learn about a huge number of common racial tropes and stereotypes until college.

This is not the same as Elizabeth Warren who never had any connection to indigenous people — that was much more of a situation of “stolen valor”. What makes this egregious is this is easy to see but times ran with this bad faith framing anyway.

He is not technically African-American. African-American specifically originated and is formally and informally used as a term for American Blacks. Hence, the image with the form says "Black or African American". That's not a "stereotype", it's just a very basic thing
