Dude replace those jets...too lazy to exit out of my phones dialogue to see what bike that's from but it looks like a Honda carb, hit up Factory Pro they make some solid jet/needle kits

there is nothing wrong with the jets except being dirty. they look much better since i've cleaned them. this bike barely has 15k on the odometer. there is no reason i should have to replace the jets. what i want to know is...

1. would it be in my best interest to soak the whole carb in some sort of carb cleaning solution or is the does the pray cleaning job good enough (guess i should post pictures of it clean)?

2. where would be the best place to get the gasket kit?

I would not soak the whole carb, at least not in carb cleaner. There are likely rubber seals you can't see.

Looks like ebay has carb kits for your bike for $30 shipped/set. The gaskets are cheap by themselves. Its the float needles and seats that make the set cost more than $5.

Did you do these things?

-Check float height with the bike level and running
-clean all ports and jets to the point where you can shoot air through one end and feel it on the other end
-With the float bowls off, hold the carb in the same orientation that it would be on the bike. Gently lift the float needle into its seat and slowly let it back down. If it catches at any point, there is a problem.
-do the same thing, but with the diaphragm. Make sure it goes up an down smoothly without catching
-check the action on the enrichment valve or choke valve or whatever choke mechanism the bike has
-Check to make sure the float needle completely seals the port when its pushed up
-Check the idle speed
-check the settings of the idle air screws
-check the shadow forums? (all bikes have an online community)
-check the air filter

no i haven't checked all of that. i was hoping that a good cleaning would do the job. i have been reading tons of info on the forums and its pretty unanimous that after 3 years of storage the carbs would likely need to be cleaned so that's what i did.

nice find on the rebuild kit. i might as well get that and replace all the major components for $30. I found just the gasket kits for $25 on ebay so its worth the extra $5 for the whole shebang.

There shouldn't be any rubber you can't remove, and since the kit comes with new rubber you should dip them in Chem-dip or similar cleaner while they're out. Spray carb cleaner alone isn't a very "good cleaning", and doesn't work well by itself on varnish. The problem with spray carb cleaner is that it doesn't get in and work on the buildup as well as the dip, it just blows out the loose stuff and softens what's in there. If you soak them first, then blow out the passages with carb cleaner and air, they will be squeaky clean.

You should really just grab that kit there, strip it, soak it, and replace all the rubber when you reassemble. You've got the whole thing torn apart already, there's really no good reason not to do a truly thorough job cleaning and rebuilding it. Do it once, put it away right, and you won't have to touch it again for the better part of 20-30 years.

There might not be any you can't remove, but remember that a lot of bike carbs have seals on the throttle shafts, which necessitate removing the throttle plate to pull the shaft. Those screws are staked and are often an extreme bitch to get out, especially on old carbs.

stupid clutch was sticking (i guess) again. seems to resolve itself quickly and only does it from park-> first luckily.

buy an indemnity bond for 150% of the value of the vehicle, just like for a car. I talked to the DMV when I had my title-less cbr600.

Sure. What kind of bike?

It differs slightly from one system to another, but the basic concept is the same: Set engine to TDC on the cylinder you're checking, then slide progressively smaller feelers between the cam and the bucket. When you find the go/no-go point, make sure that the clearance is not tighter than your service manual specifies.

^^GOogle did. Apparently it is possible, but I'd imagine it would be a PITA. Even in the bed of the Avalanche yo have to put the bike sideways, and it is a significatnyl larger bed.

and I would not try to load them on the incline like dirtbikes in the picture, i'd try to wrestle it sidways and have the read wheel hanging off a bit (maybe have a rail under it to move the rear wheel off the gate). It may require helper springs too. Sounds like you would be better off with a compact pickup.

I don't think they are. I have the manual, but I've never done anything like it before.

I'm going to try to follow instructions here, its pretty simple and stupid but i have about the mechanical inclination of a well a computer jockey.

Its an 03 600rr

yeah, I want the comfort, room, and gas mileage of a car. i'm probly going to buy a trailer and try hauling it with my 540i. it's rated for 2 tons of braked load.

^4 They are shim-under-bucket type iirc, so if they are our of spec then fixing it will have to wait for another day. Procedure is pretty simple, but be sure you can remember how to put all that crap back together. It's a bit of a pain on I-4's. I found doing valves on V-Twins is easier, the inline's just require removing more bits to get to the head.

Advance Auto has a good little set with steel blades all the way down to like .003. AutoZone also has a feeler set, but everything under .010 I think is brass. Get the one from Advance if you're picking up a set.

This past saturday I helped a buddy buy a blue SV650 at the Ride Now in Concord. He's getting totally reamed on the price and financing, but he really wanted a bike asap.

I rode it back to Greensboro for him. Super-flickable little bike; he's going to learn fast.

there was no snark to my comment! I was speaking to how hot it is when you sit in traffic, no matter what you're wearing, as you're sitting on top of a machine probly running 200+*. It's 8327483273287 worse on track. I lost 8lbs on monday
