From Doyel at CBS. Sad, but mostly true at this point:Once upon a time Lee Fowler was a sympathetic figure. Fowler is the athletics director at North Carolina State, and while he didn't help keep coach Herb Sendek by telling his idiot fan base to sit down and shut up, he didn't exactly chase Sendek out of town, either. That's what Wolfpack fans did, chasing their coach all the way to Arizona State despite five straight NCAA Tournament appearances in Raleigh. So Fowler was someone to be pitied. He was even more pitiable as he kept swinging for home runs and landing on his rear end. Rick Barnes and John Calipari turned down huge raises from the Wolfpack to accept smaller raises from Texas and Memphis. Poor Lee Fowler. Poor guy. That was then. Now? Fowler's a clown. Fowler is careening around college basketball, looking for someone -- anyone -- with enough name recognition to take this job. Fowler's goal isn't to win games next February. His goal is to win the press conference next week. Not good, Lee. Not good at all. If the reports are right -- and when it comes to leaky N.C. State, the reports are usually right -- Fowler has made inquiries into LSU's John Brady, Texas A&M's Billy Gillispie and Wisconsin's Bo Ryan. None would fit at N.C. State. Or even close. But what the heck. N.C. State fans have heard of Bo Ryan! Hire him! Look, Lee. Stop trying to hit a home run. N.C. State doesn't have that kind of power, and by now, you should know it. Go for a guy from a smaller conference, preferably someone who doesn't have one of the best jobs in his conference and yet manages to win every year anyway. That is what will face N.C. State's next coach. So find someone who fits the profile. A working knowledge of the state of North Carolina would help, too. Find someone who has both of those, Fowler, and you've got your next coach. Or you could give Mike Krzyzewski and Lute Olson a call. Surely one of them would say yes. This is, after all, N.C. State

^damn that guy is fucking harshfowler is running out of time though in my opinion, if a decision is not made by the end of this week this situation and the media feeding frenzy will go from bad to worse!

He's pretty much dead on.
4/19/2006 11:29:30 AM
I agree, fowler seems to think he is in a corner that requires a "name" coach to get out ofi wouuld rather go for a young, mid-major fireball, or a guy like haith, sign the deal and move on, and avoid all this shitty pressand damn we have the worst PR in major college athletics, i am convinced of this more every day!
4/19/2006 11:32:27 AM
i think he was going for the big name to bring the fans back togetheri think it may have worked in a way.im bothered that he didnt start the search before herb was gonei called this shit after herb went off on the fans at the acc-t. Our PR has always sucked. They did the absolute worst job in the history of Public Relations when the Jimmy V shit went down. We could have avoided about 99.9% of the bad shit that we got if we had good PR at the time.

sorry jbrick83
4/19/2006 12:15:40 PM
damn... for once i have to agree with doyel...why do you think state's fan base is so stupid and immature?i think it has to do with all the little, podunk counties whose students we have to take to fulfill quota since we're a state school... other schools can focus more overall relative achievement rather than achievement within a county
4/19/2006 12:42:32 PM
wow 44 pages.....
4/19/2006 12:43:16 PM
its because people are still following this grand illusion that we deserve to be a great power now since we were a great power in the past

Long List Of Requirements For Next N.C. State CoachPOSTED: 12:33 pm EDT April 18, 2006UPDATED: 12:33 pm EDT April 18, 2006RALEIGH, N.C. -- Phil Jackson won't be Herb Sendek's replacement at North Carolina State, even if the current Los Angeles Lakers coach was interested. The list of requirements for the job includes a minimum of five years of head coaching experience at an NCAA Division I school. So Jackson, who has won nine NBA championships, isn't eligible.Neither are Seattle SuperSonics coach Nate McMillan or Detroit Pistons assistant Sidney Lowe, two former Wolfpack players who have no college coaching experience.Sendek was 191-132 in 10 seasons with the Wolfpack, and he led them to appearances in the NCAA tournament during each of his final five seasons. That tied the late Jim Valvano for the best run in school history.Sendek was introduced as the new coach at Arizona State on April 3.According to Diane Baker, a human resources coordinator at N.C. State, any changes to the job qualifications must be submitted to her department for approval. Some of the other requirements include a bachelor's degree, a commitment to following NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference rules, an ability to help players make progress toward their degrees and an entire section on salesmanship.N.C. State athletic director Lee Fowler is in his third week of looking for a new coach. According to various reports, Texas coach Rick Barnes and Memphis coach John Calipari both turned down offers of about $2 million a year. Each used his flirtation with the Wolfpack to get a contract extension and a raise from his current school.http://www.wral.com/sports/8796398/detail.html

^i've heard that basically if fowler finds someone who doesn't fit the "five years experience" qualification, he can pretty much just say "yeah i need that rule changed" and that it wouldn't be a big deal. the college degree requirement is probably the more vital requirement in that list.
4/19/2006 12:53:35 PM
Anyone else think that Doyle article is total bullshit. How does he know Fowler is just looking for a coach that will make him look good at the press conference? How can he read Fowler's mind and say that he is only looking for name recognition in a coach? What a douche of a writer that guy is.
4/19/2006 12:55:20 PM
he's going on speculation like absolutely everyone else the past week regarding our coaching situation.and of course, as doyel, he takes the negative spin of the speculation.
4/19/2006 12:56:58 PM
i've said from day one, if we can't get a big name coach, get Gregg Marshall...this guy is a great coach
4/19/2006 2:02:33 PM
^good coach? probablyGreat coach? No fucking way... he coaches in the Big South for gods sake. I'll take a risk on him, but to say he's a great coach is stupid. If he's a great coach Herb is John Wooden
4/19/2006 2:10:19 PM

exciting to watch? like the 2nd half of the NCSU vs UNCC game 2 years ago?
4/19/2006 5:12:29 PM
Dave Glenn is reporting that the search has taken "a dramatic turn," whatever that means.
4/19/2006 6:06:00 PM
^more recent than that article we've all seen?
4/19/2006 6:08:20 PM
^so you judge a coach by what he does in one half of one game that happened two years ago? if you've ever been to one of his games you would know that he's very energetic, something i think we all want in a coach.

Don't be so quick to laugh. There are a lot of people saying this....and maybe Glenn's blog is pertaining to this?I wouldn't expect anything of it. Probably just still talking to Barnes getting his info on who he'd recommend.... but according to some...apparently there is semi-credibility to the rumor[Edited on April 19, 2006 at 6:30 PM. they are "rumors and bullshit", how astute of you to point that out

Nah...I just made a big post this morning with rumors with names and he claimed I took it off of Packpride. Now packpride comes out with a post about an hour ago listing half of the rumors I said this morning...one of them being about Rick Barnes being mentioned again which I left out of my post because I didn't want to get laughed off the site...and WolfMiami brings it over here acting like he "heard a rumor" when he just took it off of Packpride. It's pretty funny actually.
