Yeah, it'll be funny if the tax business torpedoes him, given that his lack of payment appears to be in accordance with the law. It's a dumb law, and it needs changing, but he (maybe) didn't do anything illegal (this time).I wonder if there will be an uptick in tax evasion as a result of this campaign. Trump supporters deciding to emulate their man.

This has nothing to do with taxes. What's going to hurt him is the fact that he managed to lose a BILLION dollars on CASINOS during an unprecedented bull market in the early 90s. His entire claim to the Presidency is based on being a good businessman, but it turns out the entirety of his wealth was built on conning people and gaming the tax code. He's a total fraud.[Edited on October 2, 2016 at 9:53 AM. Reason : bull]

Sure, that's gonna be a big part. But to a lot of Americans who do pay income taxes, the idea of a supposedly super-wealthy dude not having to is going to rankle. And then there's the synthesis of the two issues, where his usual excuse for not paying much taxes - he's such a clever businessman - is now undermined by the reason he is not paying taxes.
10/2/2016 10:09:04 AM
are they able to think that hard though?
10/2/2016 10:20:32 AM
He didn't actually lose a billion dollars. That's just what he was able to write off. I'm sure he personally was able to screw over whoever he could to keep money in his accounts.
10/2/2016 11:33:17 AM
Yeah for examples, you can write off maintenance costs on income properties you maintenance yourselves. By the time you add in costs for labor, miles driven, and max them all out to things you didn't actually do, it ends up costing thousands of dollars for something you did on your own time for free. Most construction work is paid off the books so this is something relatively impossible to track. Now, imagine you are trump and have hundreds of properties and dozens of accountants and professionals to polish it all up for you. The result is that the IRS audits but they investigate perpetually because they know the tax fraud is there but there is literally no way they can ever identify its source. I bet his taxes show him losing money almost every year. His networth is based on asset value not income and you don't get taxed on appreciation until you sell[Edited on October 2, 2016 at 12:32 PM. 10/3/2016 3:12:51 PM
of course it is.
10/3/2016 3:16:00 PM
Assuming that he loses, it is a very good thing that he is being open about not paying taxes.
10/3/2016 3:38:32 PM
trump is so bad and has done so many terrible things that this tax thing is probably his strongest point right now. He's such a weak candidate that his strength is still easy to attack. As a civilian, Trump's goal is to accumulate wealth for himself and he's done that. As president, his goal would shift to creating prosperity for the country. Avoiding paying taxes translates into smart accounting (he didn't get that point across in the debate) and managing money. Our country overspends and has amassed great debt because our politicians don't know the tricks of deal making. This is essentially the only appeal of trump.I would drop this tax thing if I were Hillary. Attack him on anything else because only an idiot would voluntary pay more taxes than they owe. Only an idiot would not try to deduct as much as possible.[Edited on October 3, 2016 at 3:43 PM. Reason : k]

^ tax thing is strong because Trump's tax proposals would exacerbate the problem he represents: socialized losses, privatized gains.Income and wealth gains have heavily benefitted the upper classes through the recession, because of decades of trickle-down policies that resulted in the tax loopholes Trump used, and he will only make this problem worse.

10/3/2016 4:43:58 PM
The tax code allows you to write off arbitrary things as losses that didn't actually cost you money. Things like "loss of use" and depreciation are passive losses. They have writeoff value that can be much less than their actual value if you are smart and plan it in advance. The wealthier you are, and the larger your business, the more people you can hire to spend all of their time planning this and working the things that can be deducted into your basic operating costs. At that point, part of what would have been typical expenditures are now also "losses". Its just as much fraud as people who do couponing or credit card reward dumps.^waiting for someone to just magically mail hillarys speech transcripts to the nyt[Edited on October 3, 2016 at 4:45 PM. Pay to play donations to nominations, DNC in bed with Clinton and media, Clinton staff getting immunity with no result, witnesses sitting in on questioning, destroying evidence post subpoena, caught asking how to cover up a cover up on Reddit, there's so much blatant shit that it's hard to list. The point is all of it is much more relevant than Trump calling a fat bimbo an insult 20 years ago, but brainwashed hacks can't see that.
