A couple of you guys had expressed interest in possibly coming over tomorrow for the maintenance day, so if you definitely plan on being there, let me know and I'll PM you my address. I'll be doing lunch from 11-12, and the rest of the afternoon will be hanging out and working on bikes.

I'm def in if we can wrap up the wrenching by 4-5pm. Tomorrows a perfect day for riding: no rain, no wind, not too hot, not too cold.
4/29/2011 10:03:19 AM
im not much of a "car guy" so i figured id see what the route cause may be. first day of no rain in a week so i took my bike to work (yay).i took a lunch break to go to the bank, but when i got BACK on the bike after being in the bank, the clutch got stuck as if it were not depressed. I had the grip pressed in all the way and the cable seemed to be functioning properly, but every time I went to start the bike it lunged forward in first gear as if i left the clutch off (note i hadn't put it in first and def parked in neutral). I also couldnt seem to shift it back into neutral at this time. after depressing and releasing the clutch for a few minutes and jiggling the shift pedal up and down to diagnose the neutral issue, it seemed to be back to normal.possibly related, but one time i was in second and it seemed to drop back to neutral. I could have stupidly tapped the shift pedal down by accident, but it seemed unlikely.
4/29/2011 7:07:17 PM
What kind of bike is it?
4/30/2011 11:15:42 AM
Low on oil causing wet clutch system to stick? Bad clutch cable?
4/30/2011 11:20:59 AM
^^ 81 CB400T.
4/30/2011 12:17:51 PM
First, sweet bike. Second, sounds like your clutch cable needs lubing or replacing. Whenever my old Honda starts missing shifts or finding false neutrals, I know it's time for an oil change. I do not, however, recommend this approach.
4/30/2011 4:31:45 PM
Sometimes old clutch plates just stick. It takes those abrubt forces of the starter to unstick them. Fresh oil should help, but it's probably going to need a new clutch sometime soon. This happens sometimes on my EX500, but not so severely. If it's been sitting for a week or two and it's cold, whenever I first hit the starter (with the clutch in) it'll lunge forward as if it's in gear, then it'll chill the fuck out and act normally. If you're CERTAIN the bike was in neutral, you may have bigger problems.
4/30/2011 5:16:43 PM
ill try the oil for now. it seemed to like to go into neutral about 1/2 the times i went from 1st to second and im not THAT bad at shifting.
4/30/2011 5:35:23 PM
Yeah, that sounds just like my CB750 when it's time for an oil change[Edited on May 1, 2011 at 9:44 PM. Reason : 9000 RPM @ 15 MPH]

5/4/2011 5:44:26 PM
nothing wrong with an 883! its a solid little motor and a great commuter.
5/4/2011 8:39:01 PM
Except for today, it's supposed to rain all week in GreensboroFuuuuuuuu
5/9/2011 10:09:27 AM
You must live in a different Greensboro

I am really close to upgrading from my current motorcycle.Just got to find out where my job will take me. If the roads are good, new bike = get.If I go to the desert? Not so much.

can't blame the man for capitalizing on the current cafe racer craze. I think lot of people in this thread are proud owners of 80's hondas. Honestly since you can have an SV650 or many other late 90's bikes for a couple two more hundred bucks, i really dont see the appeal of the 80's bikes at those prices. Unless its something liek a cbx or vmax or something really unique like that, it is not quite old enough to be vintage but outdated enough to be irrelevant. yeah if you can pick one up for three-four hundred bucks and have it on the road as a cheap commuter for under 800 bucks then yeah, otherwise blah

thats what i am looking for if anyone knows where one may be.a POS commuter beater bike like a CB350 or something to roll around on and just have to mess around with.any leads?<$500 also[Edited on May 13, 2011 at 5:52 PM. Reason : g]
5/13/2011 5:50:12 PM
Plenty of good older bikes on Craigslist for ~$1000You're not gonna find anything worth riding everyday for <$500 unless you start digging through old ladies' barns.
5/13/2011 6:14:04 PM
$11-1200 should land you a good condition, running, and maintained UJM. Try model-specific forums like thegsresources.com or similar for reasonable prices, you may just have to hunt to find something nearby.
5/13/2011 6:47:25 PM
yeah ive seen some around 5-600 right before winter, but they either have listed problems or look pretty rusted out. i got my 81 for 800, but its tires were pretty shitty so that brings it up to 1000-1200 or so.
5/13/2011 7:33:36 PM
has anyone here ever had a gsxr600? or specifically a 2007 model?id like to hear opinions/experiences that i cant readily google?thanks guys!
5/13/2011 7:59:58 PM
i had one of the last carbed models. the chassis is very stable yet forgiving. plenty of parts available because they're so popular.
5/13/2011 8:20:46 PM
Is there any reason I should pay $55 for a K&N air filter instead of $25 for an EMGO?
5/14/2011 4:15:45 PM
there is no reason you should buy a K&N, period, unless it's strictly a racebike and you want another half of a horsepower at the expense of filtration.
5/15/2011 1:36:57 AM
I had a falling out with k&n when I put one in my truck and later found a bunch of silt in my turbo inlet...not okay. They're probably fine for n/a gas motors but there are plenty of other heavy breathing aftermarket intakes for a fraction of the cost. At least do some research first on your specific model
5/15/2011 3:25:42 AM
1. Go to searchtempest.com2. Enter the mile radius you are willing to travel to pick up a bike.3. Enter keywords (e.g. maxim, sv650, cb750, etc)4. Profit

so I pulled the carbs off on Friday. it was surprising much easier then i thought it was going to be. i was figuring at least 2 hours since this was my first attempt. had 'em off in just over an hour. now that i've done it once i could probably do it again in 20 mins. anyway...have yet to pull them apart. hopefully i'll get time this weekend to do that.
5/16/2011 9:31:37 AM

^^Nothing odd about those. Those are all classic jap muscle bikes. There was a Seca 900 Turbo on CL last time I browsed.
5/17/2011 8:26:46 AM
5/17/2011 11:56:30 AM
i got a great deal on it and just want to flip it basically...nothing else to it other than that. i may dick around on it a little in the parking lot but just wanna flip it for a profit.
5/17/2011 12:50:29 PM
Ok so I got around to breaking down the carburetor last night and here are some pics of the innards....check out the clogged port (see red arrow)so after i got it all apart i sprayed carb cleaner through all the ports and jets. i only found one clogged port. the jets seems to be clear just dirty. do you think this will be good enough or should i let the housing and non-rubber pieces soak in some sort of solution? i'm definitely going to get a gasket set and replace all the gaskets which will set me back about $70 for both carbs which is a rip off but oh well. its worth the peace of mind.
5/19/2011 2:41:16 PM
get some gasket paper and make your own...its way cheaper.
5/19/2011 2:43:16 PM
$70 is 10x what I would expect to pay for two carb bowl gaskets. Are you sure thats not a full rebuild kit?Was there something you wanted to fix by cleaning the carbs, or just doing it for the sake of it? Those carbs look fine except for the clogged drain port and old diaphragm.
5/19/2011 3:35:34 PM
bike fires but won't stay running. its been in storage for over 3 years and from what i've read on forums and what not the carbs were the first culprit. i thought the diaphragm looked to be in good condition. its not stiff and has no visible cracks or damaged areas. the gasket set part number is 16010-MB6-305. (see link)http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche.com/team-powersports/Honda_OEM/HondaMC.asp?Type=13&A=21&B=24the cheapest i can find on the internet is $25 per set (i nned two sets) but i'd also have to pay shipping. i can get locally for $38 per set at Team Power Sports.by the way 1984 Honda VT700C Shadow
