Support Cancer Research and the NCSU Wolfpack With Your Computer's Spare Time! If you're like most people you've got a computer that spends a lot of time idling on a blank screen or running a cool screensaver. Did you know it's possible to directly support Cancer, Alzheimer's, and Cystic Fibrosis research using your computer's idle time? The Stanford University Folding@home project provides a small piece of software which uses your computer?s spare processing power to run simulations and help researchers understand these diseases. The NCSU Wolfpack Folding@home team has been ranked as high as 81st in the world but we were recently knocked out of the Top 100. While our team has had much success in the past, if we don't get some new computers and PS3s running soon we'll keep moving farther down the ladderGot a PS3? PS3s currently provide over 60% of the processing power in the Folding@home network! Each PS3 that joins the NCSU Folding Team provides huge boost and brings us closer to getting back in the Top 100! If you have one watch the video below to see how easy it is to setup the client and help the NCSU Wolfpack Folding team.Links:Wikipediahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folding_at_homeOfficial Stanford Folding@home Websitehttp://folding.stanford.edu/NCSU Wolfpack Folding@home Websitehttp://www.fah.genejockeys.comWolfweb Threadmessage_topic.aspx?topic=118820NCSU Team Stats Pagehttp://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=59http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_list.php?s=Folding Forumshttp://forum.folding-community.org/forums.htmlDownload The Client Here:http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html We recommend using the "No-nonsense text-only" client for most computers. For multi-core systems, the SMP client will get you and the team far more points than the traditional client (but it doesn't start as a service, so you'll have to restart the client manually or automatically when your computer restarts). If you have a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, its best to turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS if you know how. If you have an ATI X1800 or X1900 series graphics card you can even run Folding@home on your graphics card (with great results). Installation InstructionsEnter a UsernameEnter Team [59] (thats the important part)Launch automatically at machine startup, installing this as a service [yes]Ask before fetching/sending [no]Use internet explorer settings [no]Use Proxy [no] (unless you want to use a proxy)Allow receipt of work assignments and return of work results greater than 5MB [yes]Change Advanced Options: [no]The folding client will run in the background as a service at low priority and won't interfere with your work/fun or slow down your computer at all. And you can run as many PC and PS3 clients you want under your username to contribute to your points and to the team points. If you have any questions feel free to contact me or any other member of the team.

this seems like a bunch of crap. if it really were that powerful, you'd think they would have gotten some results by now.

And by "not a whole lot", you mean the new drug treatments and DOZENS of scientific articles that have been written?

I hit 300,000 a few days ago. I am going to be out of the top ten soon if I don't pick up the pace.

I'm just giving y'all shit. I think it's a good idea. I participated in that Seti at home distributed computing thing back in the day. (I was just trying to get some sort of debate going to liven up this thread!)

The SMP client expires today. They've released a new one, all you have to do is replace the changed files (fah.exe may be the only one) instead of uninstall/reinstall.http://forum.folding-community.org/ftopic21289.htmlMain SMP section:http://forum.folding-community.org/forum60,smp-for-windows-beta-v5.91.htmlThey've also released the v6 beta clients. They're moving towards a system where its the same download for SMP and the normal uni-processor client...you would just run it in SMP mode if you had multiple cores. The Linux and Mac v6 beta clients have this functionality, they're still working on the Windows v6 client.http://forum.folding-community.org/ftopic21311.htmlDownload new clients here:http://folding.stanford.edu/download.htmlI'm curious if the v6 windows client produces more PPD than the current one...]
10/1/2007 8:28:29 AM
5.9.1 is the latest I see on the download page... i am downloading it. i was waiting to send results...
10/1/2007 10:36:23 AM
yeah the SMP client is still in a v5.91 beta status...its just for some stupid reason they have expiration dates on the clients (eg today, Oct 1st) and they stop workng after that. I think this will be the last time we'll have to deal with this though.they've release a windows v6 beta client that currently only works in single-core mode, but soon it will be able to run in SMP mode too meaning there won't be multiple windows console clients anymore (or SMP clients with expiration dates)
10/1/2007 11:35:09 AM
everybody get their SMP clients back up and running?
10/2/2007 8:35:48 AM
we hit #94 this morning
10/2/2007 10:16:32 AM
Has anyone noticed a bunch of these 206 WUs showing up on your single core clients?I've got a couple of Centrino-Duo machines that I'm running two console clients on each (because the SMP WUs don't finish in the 4 days window allowed). Lately I've been getting two of these 206pt WUs on each machine, and for each laptop I'm only averaging ~160PPD...Seems like an awful low point output when I'm running two clients on a somewhat new computer...Anyone noticing anything like this?
10/2/2007 10:26:20 AM
now that i updated my SMP program, it wont work, i keeps on givin me the error starting Folding@Home core. over and over and then goes to sleepAnybody have this problem also?
10/2/2007 9:56:25 PM
what error message are you getting?try googling for the exact error message...and/or just post it here
10/2/2007 10:32:43 PM
i fiddled round on google, and it was error 63(99) , said it was a permission issue, so i think i got it workin now, not for sure, had to set it to run as administrator(i hope i dont have to do that everytime) and had to redo the install.dat file
10/2/2007 10:36:18 PM
is your windows account an administrator account? if not why not? what OS are you using? If you're still having problems let us know.
10/2/2007 11:50:17 PM
i got it workin now, cept it hung up on me after 2%, thats the earliest its ever hung on me before and i had to restart it, normally they dont hang till like 60 or 70% if it is gonna hang up on me. But it seems to be runnin fine now, yes i am the admin account, im runnin XP Pro, and if i run into any more probs ill letchall know
10/3/2007 2:08:01 AM
For linux people on beta 6 xmp client (and soon to be windows smp clients), be sure to rtfm.... I upgraded to beta 6 linux smp on monday and owned my PPD because I forgot the '-smp' flag. So those machines were all single cored for 2 days. Should be all better now.
10/3/2007 12:16:19 PM
yeah they're moving over to the same client for smp and single-core uses...just by use of the -smp flag to designate multiple cores.the linux and mac beta 6 clients have this functionality, the windows beta 6 client doesn't have it yet (but theyre working on it)]
10/3/2007 1:09:47 PM
we just hit #93!

^^Not for long. It looks like we are going to drop to 95, before moving up again.
10/4/2007 7:44:56 AM
gawd we're hurting here lately i wonder how much of this slump is due to the stupid expiring SMP client. It makes no sense, all they change in the program is the expiration date and make it good for another 3-4 months...such a pain in the ass. good thing theyre coming out with the v6 soon and we can be done with all this expiring mess. [/rant]Lets add some more clients and get back up there!!! ]
10/4/2007 8:53:39 AM
i wonder if the university would have anything against me running F@H on the 20 computers in our office
10/4/2007 8:56:15 AM
WHY THE FUCK DOES NCSU NOT RUN IT ANYWAY ON ALL THE COMPUTERS????????
10/4/2007 6:01:02 PM
costs?
10/4/2007 6:14:18 PM
^^ It would triple their energy bill. The power consumption of computers is not trivial.
10/4/2007 6:21:59 PM
just joined on my ps3
10/4/2007 6:39:53 PM
welcome!
10/4/2007 10:24:35 PM
^^^oh i didnt know it caused a higher electric bill
10/4/2007 10:40:08 PM
^ Yes. Computer processors draw more power and generate more heat the harder they work.
10/4/2007 11:47:15 PM
i installed the smp client on my windows box to take advantage of the core 2 duo (i realize quad-core is more efficient, but what're you gonna do?)...anyway, when i run install.bat from the installation directory, it pops up a command prompt and i get this:MPICH2 Process Manager, Argonne National Lab installed.account (domain\user) [User\User-desktop]:what am i supposed to put in here? i've tried my username (which is actually "User") and then it asks for a password...i have no password for my windows box, but it won't let me continue without one, so i make one up...it asks me to confirm and then says:Password encrypted into the Registry.Credentials for User rejected connecting to User-desktopAborting: unable to connect to User-desktopwhat am i missing?

My lab servers are idle over night. That means I have about 8 dual-core Xeons that could be folding. However, I'll never get my adviser to allow such a thing if it impacts server performance during the day. Anyone have or know of any guides that explain how to configure the Linux 64bit SMP client to only run during specific hours? I've never run F@H before so I don't know how picky it is about how it's run.
10/6/2007 12:34:58 AM
cron to start it and cron to shut it down?
