i as really hoping that pitchfork would really wow me with their "Chinese Democracy" reviewbut it came off more tired and predictable than what they were accusing axl of being
12/1/2008 7:55:57 PM
i don't think i read it - i think they were one of the last sites to review iti was bowled over by chuck klosterman's self-important review over at the AV Clubedit: oh duh, they just published it today.[Edited on December 1, 2008 at 8:10 PM. Reason : ..]

^^ The unicorn of albums. I love Chuck K.

I actually like Chinese Democracy. I think if Axl had billed this as a "solo" record, it would be getting much better reviews. Is it an "important" record? Probably not. Is it a good record, especially in a relatively "down" year like '08? In my opinion, yes. It seems that some people feel like praising that record in the slightest would be some sort of disservice to Slash. Now, I'm not saying that everyone who doesn't like it is hating on it for that reason, but some of the reviews I've read dwell on their impetuous relationship far too much.

I just recently came across it, but I am digging the shit out of Supercontinents "Vaalbara."In fact, I've been listening to a lot of stoner/doom/sludge/whatever metal. Any other fans on here?Sur Lune's "Nausicaa EP" is fantastic.El Paramo's self-titled is rad as shit.Come Sleep's "The Burden of Ballast" is also good.
12/8/2008 12:39:45 PM
big fan of Mastodon, which is about the only stoner-ish metal band I can think of. I still play Kyuss like it's middle school, so I'll have to check those out.
12/8/2008 7:39:37 PM
Those bands I mentioned are nothing like Mastodon.

12/9/2008 3:57:48 PM
lol not a single album from my top 5 made the Stereogum top 50

So I guess I'm supposed to give a shit about the TV on the Radio and Fleet Foxes records? Because those are 1 and 2 on pretty much every published list so far.

apparentlydear science is good but it's nothing specialthe fleet foxes record is the same
12/13/2008 12:40:17 PM
^^ yourselfdoesn't change the fact that this was the worst year for indie music in a long time and that everyone's slobbing off the same two or three thoroughly average records[Edited on December 13, 2008 at 3:19 PM. Reason : .]

I haven't listened to all of the music released in 2008, but the Islands album Arm's Way is my favorite so far. I would say that Ladytron's Velocifero is my least favorite album that I have heard.[Edited on December 13, 2008 at 5:20 PM. Reason : n't]

weezer live has become weirder than flaming lips live (though part of that is that the lips have been on autopilot every night since around 2003)

That Arcade Fire DVD weirded me the fuck out, because there is a very brief shot of the band singing along to Intervention in front of a run down castle that I recognized instantly as the old castle at Heritage USA near Charlotte. I would really love to know how the hell the band ended up there.

swedish band Mando Diao just put a dance-rock track on their myspace, supposed to be on their new album out next year, but its on the myspace now. called "dance with somebody," i wish i were kidding.still dig it though, catchy as always with those guys.

Now I'm looking at a site where a guy snuck into the Heritage Tower years after the park closed.Good times.
12/18/2008 12:54:58 PM
There are some great pictures here from a friend of mine: http://tommyandjames.net/heritageusa.htmlI just found it interesting because the fact that they sought it out means someone in the band must have been really intently into reading about all of that stuff, which would make sense with Neon Bible.
12/18/2008 1:12:03 PM
so i'm catching up on everything i missed or ignored in 2008.-don't know how the FUCK i ignored m83. "kim and jessie" is so fucking good.-that ponytail album is pretty good also.-cut copy is pretty meh.-TVOTR is good but not great.
12/22/2008 1:26:05 PM
I love that Friendly Fires song, Paris. the rest of their stuff isn't bad either.
12/22/2008 3:35:12 PM
