I guess i find justins addition somewhat confusing. Other than the brian thompson thread in chit chat where he comes across kinda strange, he like never posts in soap box. after his CBS interview blowup in october I went down to the Crabtree B&N and read it for a bit to get a sense of whether it would be worth my time. just the Israel part. I don't know much about Senegal and that would for sure be interesting to learn more about, but I frankly don't trust Coates perspective so I probably wouldn't bother even though it was a relatively short section. I got through about 30 pages of the Israel section before I gave up and went home.

and to sum up why I don't like him, in that CBS interview Coates was asked

"why does he leave out so much"

and he replied

"I am most concerned with those who don't have a voice"

he's fundamentally not interested in the truth. as in the entire truth. the full complexity of reality. he only cares about finding oppression in everything. every other paragraph of his book was black this, white that, race, victim, oppression, etc ad nauseum. yes those things exist, but when those are the ONLY things that exist in your mind, you're going to get a lot of things wrong.

and it's crazy bc he fully recognizes and acknowledges it in his writing, he just fails to see how his approach is intellectually and ultimately morally bankrupt.

"It hurts to tell you this. It hurts to know that in my own writing I have done to people that which, in this writing, I have inveighed against - that I have reduced people, diminished people, erased people. I want to tell you I was wrong. I want to tell you that your oppression will not save you, that being a victim will not enlighten you, that it can just as easily deceive you."

and then he goes on another 100 pages about all the victimhood and oppression he felt during his week long vacation to the holy land, all while reducing, diminishing and erasing the other side of the story - "In that moment, I felt the warmth of solidarity, of 'conquered peoples,' as one of my comrades put it, finding each other across the chasm of oceans and experience."

I'm not sure if he has a therapist, but he's a posterchild for CBT. he's so wrapped up in his feelings and thoughts about his feelings, it's like he's intoxicated on the warped narratives he obsesses over. and sure, writers who are in touch with their feelings make for good writing, but he's out here making moral judgements on the world based on his feelings and that just doesn't scale.

I'd suggest watching this response to the book



and then read the book I recommended "Jews Don't Count" it speeaks your language. and watch some of the interviews I've posted of people who actually live in the region. their perspective is going to be a lot better informed than a guy like Coates.
