2/25/2014 10:45:46 AM
so what's the consensus on Gringos.based on the online reviews I've read, seems majority feel they are overpriced, food not great, and seating arrangement is horrendous.maybe they are still ironing things out? is it worth me venturing out to try it?[Edited on February 25, 2014 at 11:44 AM. I haven't heard anything good about Gringo, really. The food was good at Joule but $13 for biscuits and gravy shocks the conscience. Not a coffee drinker so that may be fantastic idk

They've been "not officially open" for what, six weeks?

Issac Hunters is shutting down soon (or did over the wknd) due to a conflict with the landlord. Not sure if they'll be opening in a new location or not, that's TBD.

Isaac Hunters was a shit hole
3/18/2014 9:33:50 AM
always gave off a distinct vomit smell when walking by
3/18/2014 12:14:46 PM
^^ and ^ agreedIt didn't seem like the right location for that type of bar. Although Coughlin's (sp?) seems to do well there. Isaac hunters started out trying to be higher end, with the bourbon selection, etc., but just turned into a younger (dare I say fratty) chug fest sort of bar. Which is fine, but typically flame out and don't have the longevity. I enjoyed my first few trips there right after opening, but am not sad to see it go.
3/18/2014 1:40:17 PM
Coughlin's is nothing like what Issac Hunters used to be before they changed.Issac Hunter's was one of, if not my favorite, bar on Fayetteville St for the first 2 years of it's existence. Laid back atmosphere, bunch of games to play, a small dance floor with a DJ playing stuff from late 90s early 2000s. Then out of the blue they expanded the dance floor, moved the games away and started playing shitty music. Naturally the Glenwood South crew gravitated towards it like bears to honey.I endured it 1-2 more times after that, then never again. I even chastised them via FB msg'er telling they sucked and threw in the figurative towel of being a different type of bar.Anyway I won't miss them. Just wanted to let people know it was going away [Edited on March 19, 2014 at 9:29 AM. Reason : k]
3/19/2014 9:28:41 AM
Was Coglin's ever not shit? I only went there once and it was after they had been open for a while; was it shitty like that from the beginning?

Raleigh's Planning Director got hired to be the Parks Commissioner in NYC. Not sure what this means for the future of downtown.
3/21/2014 4:53:13 PM
Big shoes to fill... I thought Raleigh might be safe when he didn't get planning commissioner.
3/21/2014 8:46:31 PM
I took a planning class years ago that he co-taught...he definitely has a certain charisma to him that suits NYC.
3/22/2014 12:34:51 PM
I believe he's from New Jersey, and he went to school in NYC and worked there earlier in his career, so it's no surprise. Parks commissioner seems kind of disappointing, though I know it is an important position.

The new Sadlacks/Berkley Cafe is awesome. Lots of artifacts from Sadlacks hidden in the decor.
3/22/2014 2:40:43 PM
I may end up there later this afternoon. excited to check it out.
3/22/2014 3:40:20 PM
Anyone know what happened to Turkish Delights on Glenwood?
3/26/2014 1:44:50 PM
Edmund Pevensie ate them out of business.

3/26/2014 4:24:01 PM
no, just insinuating that you contributed to the negative progression of the bar due to your fraternity affiliation. not saying anything really, just putting two statements together. "bar became fratty" then frat guy says it was his favorite bar. meh. whatevs.

it's the lounge, bro....relax.
3/28/2014 2:39:51 PM
As a side conversation, I am interested to see what goes in the former Isaac Hunters space. I like that end of Fayetteville Street, but the lack of parking seems to hurt it. I am similarly interested to see if Paddy O'Beers can survive (despite the less than optimal name).
3/30/2014 9:50:00 AM
there are 2 parking decks on that side of Fayetteville St.
3/30/2014 10:01:24 AM
^^ There's literally a parking deck directly in front of Isaac Hunter's.
3/30/2014 2:05:30 PM
4/1/2014 10:54:54 AM
I always access that deck from Wilmington Street, so I guess I will amend my earlier comment to general "lack of foot traffic" on that end of Fayetteville St., as opposed to lack of parking. Although, the general perception of lack of surface parking availability likely hurts that area. Many of the street spots are 1 hour, or 15 minute, and visitors often fill up the surface spaces and walk towards city plaza. I lived oh Hargett for 5 years, and am not opposed to decks, but there are plenty of downtown visitors that avoid decks like the plague.
4/1/2014 1:36:34 PM
Not quite downtown:http://m.bizjournals.com/triangle/blog/2014/04/fresh-market-expands-footprint-at-cameron-village.htmlr
4/1/2014 2:17:07 PM
^^ Well, that's fine, but those people are dumb. Find a spot to park in a real city and you're likely walking 4+ blocks to your destination, if not much more. Raleigh has tons of parking by way of decks, but people have been spoiled by years of downtown being a ghost town.

4/2/2014 9:35:52 AM
i'm so used to easy parking in decks that i often accidentally pass open on-street parking on my way to a parking deck (on the few occasions I drive downtown and not walk)
4/2/2014 9:39:18 AM
driving and parking. lol.
