The hilarious fact about this whole Wilson scandal is that Wilson was incorrect in his assumption anyway.
9/16/2009 9:21:32 AM
^^ There's definitely an x factor to the 9/12/"you lie" stuff.Obama isn't doing anything Bush didn't do-- he may be turning the dial a couple clicks, but that doesn't account for the explosion of anger we're seeing.I doubt the factor is purely racism, though. I imagine it's more a case of him being so different from the average Glenn Beck viewer; race just being one of his differences.
9/16/2009 10:46:14 AM
i still feel that you have to be a little naive to not assume that maybe some amount of racial politics played into Wilson's outburst. consider the source, and consider the topic that made him so angry (illegal aliens)i mean, most of us live in the south, right? would that really be so shocking? i see people being racist all the time around here
9/16/2009 10:58:03 AM
If racism has anything to do with it, I think it would be racism/xenophobia directed towards illegal aliens... not anything to do with Obama, which is what everybody's saying it is. How does Obama being black have anything to do with what was said and what the remark was referencing?
9/16/2009 11:06:41 AM
It's directed towards people who aren't White, Christian, and heterosexual.

^Truth. I know a veteran Wake County public school teacher from up North who, up until a few months ago, was unaware that black people also live out in the country. She explained to me that where she is from white people live in the suburbs, and black people are just the folks they buy drugs from in the city. Purchasing drugs was the only instance in which she interacted with black people growing up. She moved to Raleigh not knowing our schools were integrated...
9/16/2009 2:07:02 PM
^ that ignorance though means that they would be more open-minded towards a black person if they met them. They have less preconceived notions. NOtice that her prejudices were also of southerners there too.Compared to southerners who racist views might have become more galvanized, as exemplified in that poll that showed widespread belief in the south that Obama was not born in the US (or was it that he was a muslim?). Statistics in general don't fare well for the south, when it comes to racism.
9/16/2009 2:12:16 PM
I really think you should define "the north" as well. Rural Indiana != New York.
9/16/2009 2:17:03 PM
9/16/2009 2:18:26 PM
I'm not sure they are more open-minded. I think they have more money and more education so they can present their views more tactfully. For example, newcomers (largley from up North) make very eloquent arguments against Wake County's integrated schools...but what they really mean to say is: I was promised good schools when I moved here, and I paid three hundred grand for this house, and I'll be goddamned if my kid is gonna go to school with some poor, black kids.
9/16/2009 2:35:27 PM
Northern black folk don't fit racist stereotypes as closely as southern blacks. This is why Northerners are less racist.
9/16/2009 3:11:21 PM
Very happy to see this response on the whole racism thing:

I knew the race card would come into play during Obama's presidency at some point. But it's still amusing to see how early it came out and how often it's used.
9/16/2009 4:30:17 PM
Yeah, you're right. This was in July:
9/16/2009 4:36:48 PM
Jimmy Carter, one of the most spineless, gutless, unimportant, irrelevant presidents of the 20th century, needs to keep his mouth shut. No one died and made him an authority on race relations in this country, and he certainly does not have a place commenting on how he thinks race is playing a role in the opposition to our supreme potentate Obama.During the election I was commenting on how I was worried that Obama's policies would be extremely liberal, and as such, I was not going to vote for him, and my coworker's response was something to the tune of "ah yea, still tryin ta keep a brother down."I just cant wait to get the next 7.25 years over with, so we can go back to being able to discuss how we dont like the president without having to be called racist.
9/16/2009 6:05:34 PM
Of course, PBO will "denounce" what President Carter said. It doesn't matter, it's been said, and the MSM is going to pick up on it because it was Carter who said it. He's the spokesman for all of the things that liberals/democrats really want to say and are afraid to say on air (Israel, Bush, Racism, etc.). They can dismiss him as much as they want, because the established MSM is going to take what he said and run with it as gospel.

^ No more so than the morons claiming that Rush, or Beck or whoever the boogeyman of the week is, speaks for conservatives.
9/16/2009 7:45:29 PM
^ Beck was the driving force of the 9/12 protest. If they are conservatives, he definitely represents them. In fact, his statement a few weeks ago that Obama directly said “judge me by who I surround myself with” was a blatant fabrication that was reposted on practically every conservative blog and website, including here, and parroted by conservatives around the Internet. He may not represent actual conservative values, but he’s the one who is speaking for so-called conservatives. How this came to be, I can’t say (probably has to do with Fox News promoting him), but this is how it is.We haven’t heard from Carter in months, and he can’t in any way be characterized as a media personality the way Beck, Hannity, Malkin, etc. have portrayed themselves recently. It’s ludicrous to suggest he could be. Even if Obama agreed with Carter (and I bet he probably does), he can’t ever say this publicly, and he knows it. Obama’s been pretty good about not talking about race until he’s forced to, which has only happened so far with the Jeremiah Wright thing (which preceded his biggest drop in support at the time).
9/16/2009 7:59:24 PM
^conservatives rarely if ever stand up to them so why wouldn't we assume that they speak for conservatives

9/20/2009 6:37:41 PM
^ Reason Magazine was pumping up the 9/12 protests before they happened and their staff was in attendance. Best I can figure, they do not identify themselves with Beck, as he is not nearly Libertarian enough. Also, Club for Growth invited their members out, and they are pretty darn Republican, more-so than Beck. Those are the only two organizations whose communications I monitor, but I suspect the other organizations I mentioned also rallied their members. I find it hard to believe any one TV personality could rally so many people for one day, especially when there is evidence to the contrary.
9/20/2009 7:34:31 PM
^ http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2009/09/16/beck_skousen/That states that Beck was the one who launched the 9/12 project in March, and he had mentioned the concept prior to then. And 9/12 wasn’t originally billed, and still isn’t, as anti-democrat. Obviously since Fox News was the main supporter this is how it turned out, but it was suppose to be more general, bi partisan, angst.
