bad news on GDP and jobs and after two days of gains, the market is....flat. i know oil has been down but i just do not understand the basis of the buying interest this week, particularly in financials and retail. we are arguably in recession and will not break out of this credit crisis/housing slump at LEAST until 2009. expect another pullback in the coming week...
7/31/2008 11:04:47 AM

What is the prevailing wisdom on oil sagging? Have our driving habits put that much of a dent into the demand?

http://bigpicture.typepad.com/comments/2008/08/betting-on-bear.htmlI don't know a ton about option trading (only what a put and call is) but can someone explain these numbers?Trying to figure out how $1.7 million equals 5.7 million options and $270 million in profit, etc.
8/11/2008 12:06:36 PM
So someone bought puts on 5.7M shares of Bear stock Those puts cost of $1.7M at the time they were purchased. At by the time Bear collapsed the same puts were worth $270M.Basically the puts orginally went for 30 cents and then sold for $47
8/11/2008 12:16:34 PM
You can understand why I am confused. You're telling me the puts cost 30 cents, but this is at the link
8/11/2008 12:22:46 PM
Accordingly to the article a $60 put cost $4However, a $30 put cost $0.30That's a steep drop but with a few days to expiry it is not unreasonable. As a caveat, I am taking all this info from the article. I do not have any independent verification of options prices and so I don't know if there is a typo. Now that I think about there must have been some typo or error because $30 put cannot go for $47.[Edited on August 11, 2008 at 12:31 PM. 8/11/2008 12:29:31 PM
Yeah, I can't figure it out either...granted, I don't know much about options, but I'm stumped.Edit:Ok, I got it now, you gotta follow the bloomberg link to get more info
