hey chocolatervh let me know how you like that 12-24.i'll be getting either that or the sigma 10-20 before my trip to Alaska this May.

chargin' up my battery as i type
2/1/2007 10:22:43 AM
i like my 12-24 a lot. definitely a "i gotta get up close to the subject" lens though.between the 10-20 and the 12-24, i think basically you are trying to figure how much distortion you want to work with. 12-24 has less... but doesn't give you as much of the wide angle feel either.

A few pages back I mentioned getting a Canon 70-200 L. That's probably not gonna happen, but I've been considering the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM lens. I'm going to Bangkok, Thailand over spring break and I think the focal length range will be better for a walk-around lens over the 70-200. It's also right much cheaper. I plan on getting a 430ex flash so I can get double rebates too. Thoughts?
2/6/2007 10:54:11 PM
if you are getting it strictly as a walk around lens, the 70-200 would be a bad choice. Even the 24-105 wouldn't be quite wide enough for my taste (im assuming you're shooting dslr?) I can't comment on the quality since I only know nikon, but I'd guess if you were considering an L series you might have another lens if you want wider.
2/6/2007 11:28:26 PM
I've got a canon 50mm f/1.8 and the dull canon 18-55 "kit lens" right now for my rebel XT. Like you said, I would prefer wider than 24mm, but I feel like the 24-105L will be a good, sharp, general purpose lens, which is what I want to end up with at this point. I'll own a 70-200 and a better SLR another day... gotta start somewhere.
2/6/2007 11:53:55 PM
well from what ive heard about canons kit lens, the 24-105 will improve your quality a good bit. The 18-55 will work in a pinch when you want a shot wider than 24mm. does canon have something like the nikon 18-200VR? its a great walk around lens for travelling when switching lenses isn't as easy.
2/7/2007 12:35:32 AM
These were all taken with the 18-55 Canon kit lens before it broke.

I realize its not technically a SLR, but what have people heard about the PowerShot G7? ( http://tinyurl.com/36byf4 ) I've heard good reviews but I wanted practical experience. I apologize if its been covered before, but I didn't feel like sorting through 42 pages.

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/This guy does awesome reviews of Canon lenses.
2/26/2007 9:28:09 PM
I second that review site ^. If you're only considering those two lenses, I think I would get the 70-200 L, mostly because it's an L series lens and a constant 4.0. "The 70-200 f/4 does not extend with zooming or focusing - and the front element does not rotate." If you shoot with a polarizer, the non-rotating front element is a big plus in my opinion. There's plenty of knowledgeable people that check this thread, maybe they'll chime in...
2/26/2007 10:53:38 PM
Gotta agree with the site. I own the 70-200 f/4L. It's been a great lens. Sharp, good color and contrast. It's light weight. Great for traveling. Just wish I had the f/2.8.
2/27/2007 1:53:54 AM
Haven't really taken any pics with my new 24-105 f/4.0 L IS USM yet, but here's one I took the other day while back home.
2/27/2007 2:34:39 AM
I'm realizing how inadeuqate this camera is. Especially since it's going to be the only worthwhile camera on the summer road trip. Need to figure out a way to get a better one without breaking the bank
2/27/2007 11:04:11 PM
^^Damn man, that's a sweet ass lens! Good choice, my 70-200 is definitely not a walk-around lens.
