I am now aware that this machine is a single processor, (rephrasing of my question) but why does the SMP client run on this single processor machine and not my single processor machine at home?

Page 40 post due to me being ignant and dum.

PM synapse, or he'll probably post soon. Either way you can't run the smp client on a single core machine. The WU won't finish by the deadline.

P4's with HT show up as dual-core even though it's a single-cpu, HT is like a "simulated" 2nd core, where as dual core is an actual "physical" 2nd core, both are considered single-cpu

^exactly.

if your machine says Pentium4 on the outside, run the normal folding client.

just because you can get it to run without errors doesn't mean it will complete the work unit by the deadline. ive installed the SMP client on a laptop with an actual dual-core processor...but it was such a slow dual core proc that it couldn't complete the work units in the time allotted (4 days on that particular project).

good job everyone, we've finally evened out on the top 5 conquest and threat list...in the next 2.2 months we'll go down 5 spots, and gain 5 spots to stay in 99th place. lets keep pressing and start moving up the ladder.

News for anyone interested in a Quad -

So after weeks of heat and noise issues, I sprung for an Antec 180 case. Awesome case, much quieter than the old aluminum beater I had...but I managed to pop the heatsink loose from my proc in the transfer process, so I took a look underneath. Turns out, the thermal paste wasn't spread evenly, and obviously hadn't been making good contact. I flipped it around and snapped it back down tight, really tight.

Now - get this - it idles at 25, and hits 40-41 going full blast folding.

This is the stock air cooler on a quad - surprising what a little tinkering will do, and to think I was disgusted with it just a few weeks ago.

Lost WU? I had a 500+ point WU finishing on a computer and I believe it had trouble connecting to send the data. Well, before it could be sent, someone shut down that PC. When I fired it back up and started FAH back up, it started a new unit, but gave no indication it sent the other. The points haven't shown up. Are the points for that WU done for? This was Friday afternoon.

which version do you have installed?

most important thing to uninstall is:
Quote :
" For the console version of the software, you should be able to search for the FAH binary (called FAHConsole4.exe ) and delete the Folding@Home program. "

I would also delete fah.exe

Quote :
" However, here are some suggestions for thwarting those who have tried to obscure a Folding@Home installation:

1. Use your OS's file search utilities to look for files with filenames like "FAHlog.txt" or "FAHCore_*.exe".

2. If you find these files, look for executables in the same directory that look unusual and delete them

"

god i'm dyslexic...i read it as "uninstall and delete them" not unusual and delete them

i was like wtf there is no uninstall

the 2 processes i have running are "fahcore_78.exe" and "fah504-console.exe"

this is the best response to the error i've read:
Quote :
"We know what can "cause" the problem, but not what the problem is. The error appears when the client/core crashes. Messing with network settings, or going out of range on a WIFI connection, or ending the wrong process in the Task Manager, or when a system is overclocked too much. These all cause the client to abort, EUE, and show a 0x7b error.
"

i would set the cpu clock back to normal, but i don't want to, i'd rather stop folding, i haven't had any issues thus far with OC'ing either, so i'm not certain it's the cause, it was in fact after a hard crash, but since i removed everything i'm not certain it's file corruption either.

^ gg on setting up that many accounts. 20+ clients should give you the kind of numbers that NeoEraser was putting up...which would be a huge help since we've been falling off lately

gg to ScanZero for keeping up 10K+ points per day, and recently increasing that average to 11.5k ppd!

wasn't neoeraser near 30,000+ppd?

i think 25 non-smp core's will be near 10,000ppd, still darn good and he'll be the #1/2 producer on the team w/ scanZero (looks like he has 31 cpu's - http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userpage&teamnum=59&username=chemp)

nice work!

depends on the processors...if hes running alot of P3s or older P4s not anywhere near that much. if theyre all newish P4s then maybe 5k-7k per day or more.

as of right now it's looking like it'll only be around 2,500 PPD. it's mostly older p4's with a few p3's thrown in.

i probably have another 10 or so to add, so maybe around 3,500 a day after those

we'll see

consider this, right now i'm averaging 1,800ppd. - NeoEraser has produced so many WU for this project that it would take me 7.1 YEARS to contribute what he has contributed... and that's if his ppd doesn't increase again

for scanZero it'll only take him 8.2 months @ 13,000ppd

i got a question. Im kinda new to this folding stuff and this has never happened to me b4, i finished a WU last night and it didnt send for some reason. Now it is just sittin in my queue and i dont know how to attempt to resend it. Like i dont wanna lose it cuz it was worth like 500 points i think. So will this automatically go thru on its own or do i have to resend it myself?

yeah i have one of those too...i completed a 1700pt WU this monring and it has yet to show up.

they might be having problems on their end, maybe a server is down or something like that.

i dont have time now, but you could probably dig around in the forums and find out something. if nothing else, post your problem there and they'll figure out that happened.

^Current "official" projects are here: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/psummary.html

From that list it looks like 1760 is the current max. The maximum points are from the large work units and beta projects, if you turn your client to accept both big packets and beta work units you can grab them, but they're pretty memory intensive and tend to have problems.

If your clients aren't constrained on memory and have no problem clearing their current deadlines, I'd suggest setting bigpackets=yes in the config. The larger work units net quite a bit more ppd...at least on my machines.

What's killing my performance is numerous problems with the SMP clients, they're hanging before I notice and missing deadlines, or not finishing at all with core communication errors. A laptop beside me just failed at 98% of a 1760 point unit, threw a core 7b error and deleted the entire work unit...I'm pretty patient with most things but it's run out with this damn client. Whether it's my hardware or not, I'm going to stop using the SMP client since it's hurting more than helping on my machines.

That makes sense since you're running the standard client (though I think there may be ~700 point WUs for standard clients sometimes.)

SMP Clients (2+ cores) get the larger WUs worth more points (1000+ points per WU, mostly around 1500-1700 points)

I undertstand your frustration, but imo its worth some problems for the higher point output that the SMP client delivers. Do keep in mind that the older mobile dual-cores may not be beefy enough to complete SMP WUs in time since the deallines are normally around 4 days. It doesn't sound like thats your problem, but something to keep in mind. I'd recommend removing every trace of the SMP client on the machine in question and reinstalling...in a different directory. other option is to run two standard colsoles as services, just be sure to install them in two different directories, use the -local switch and use different MachineIDs in the installation/configuration process. gl.
