The portal is closed. PM is in it. There’s no real deadline for committing other than many school enrollment dates and I’m honestly not even sure that matters anymore . Last year we got VAL to commit in June.

^^ I don’t think anybody really expects him to come to State. So I don’t think the staff is forming a roster with him in mind. But it is still weird nonetheless. Or maybe it’s not weird for him to not publicly decommit. I don’t even know at this point

Woot, we've reached the "wildly escalating numbers being thrown out to the media by your agent" phase of Paul McNeil's Jr. transfer portal saga. Yesterday it was 4 million. Hopefully that means the decision is near?

Also, on Carter-Givens, I wonder if HS recruiting for the high majors has changed so much that a guy right outside the top 100 may just be happy to have a good cash offer in hand. Like, coaches might not be that high on a lower rated HS recruit when there's tons of guys with college minutes in the portal. For an example, I just grabbed the #32 center out of the portal rankings. Devin Williams out of FAU. Overall portal rank is #245 (and he also happens to still be available like several other guys in the 200+ club).

At that spot, you get a guy that is a similar size as Carter-Givens at 6'10", 210 lbs. He was higher rated than Carter-Givens out of HS. And he has two years of college experience with some actual high major minutes (freshmen year at UCLA) and a solid showing at FAU as a sophomore.

I'm sorry, even the thought of $4M for PM (or any college kid for that matter) makes absolutely no sense to me. I just do not see the ROI on that. the whole portal and negotiations things is so exhausting

I mean, yeah. But if that’s the going rate then you gotta pay up to be competitive. Same with coach salaries. The difference is fans are footing the bill for the NIL stuff and that feels unsustainable for most programs. There are obviously some programs with mega donors that will just pay whatever it takes. But until they are employees and have collective bargaining, it’s hard to see this changing. Seems like teams like State have to figure out a way to zig when everybody else zags. Find the market inefficiency or whatever you can to field a competitive team because we won’t be able to spend our way to the top.
