It may have been below expectations for the GOP nationwide but the NC Dems nearly completely cratered. I can only imagine if it was a full blown red wave at the national level.
11/11/2022 3:20:33 PM
Mary Ann Baldwin got a second term only because she had the rules changed to no runoff. She won with 46%. It is BS.
11/11/2022 3:24:26 PM
the anti-baldwin vote was also split between t.ruth and copeland, so the dilution worked in baldwin's favor.
11/11/2022 3:38:58 PM
At least it appears judge confirmations will still get done in Senate.
11/12/2022 10:59:42 AM
^^^, ^^ another example of how Ranked Choice Voting should be the normfortunately, looks like RCV continues to gain traction - Nevada voters approved a ballot measure to amend their constitution to use RCV, joining Alaska and Maine. They also will adopt top-5 nonpartisan primaries.

I'm also happy you were wrong about the Sentate.
11/13/2022 1:37:56 AM
You know, a GOP majority house that's only +1/+2 might be better for the Dems overall. GOP will have trouble controlling all their members (Freedom Caucus) and it gives Dems a convenient enemy to point. The GOP Civil War could be fun.
11/13/2022 2:34:16 PM
I get what you're saying, but no.House majority gets to set the schedule, has power over committees, etc. It's not at all disappointing if Dems lose the House since that was the overwhelmingly foregone conclusion, but it's some serious goal post moving to say that barely losing the House is the better outcome.
11/13/2022 2:57:27 PM
Short term, absolutely. Long term, I honestly don't know.To be clear, I'm talking about which is more beneficial longterm a 218R/217D split or a 218D/217R split, clearly Dems would benefit more if they had their current majority numbers. The minority in the House does have some power with discharge petitions. I mean, MTG is insane and if she or Massie become the deciding vote, it's going to be a mess for the GOP. At least Manchin is reasonably rational.
11/13/2022 3:29:11 PM
I could maybe buy that a razor-thin Republican majority is better than a razor-thin Democratic one. Barring some bipartisan cooperation, nothing is getting done this term either way. Two years of Republican stonewalling might do more to get out the vote than two years of "You control the White House and both houses of Congress, why can't you get anything done?"If the conservative media apparatus continues its swing away from Trump and towards DeSantis, and if that swing sufficiently redirects the base (and I really don't know whether they can), we're looking at a 2024 cycle with a relatively sane, popular Republican at the top of the ticket. And we're looking at voters who are so relieved that the new crowd aren't Q-Anon loonies that they forget that the GOP policy platform is just planks of proto-fascism glued together by stupidity. But you give the voters two more years of MTG & Co. screaming about Jewish space lasers and preventing Speaker McCarthy from doing anything...then Trump or DeSantis, either way, they're carrying that baggage.
11/14/2022 5:33:15 PM
That's essentially my point, how much of the dem vote thinks Biden has a button in his office to make Manchin do whatever he wants, but simply isn't hitting it? A GOP led house with a very vocal MTG is a nice boogeyman to blame stuff on.
11/14/2022 6:11:06 PM
It's going to be a shit sandwich. A McCarthy led thin-majority GOP House will be ungovernable and non-functional.The problem is who will voters blame when McCarthy is unable to put a passing bill on the floor and the government shuts down, defaults on debt, can't respond to an emergency, etc. You seem to have more faith in voters than I do.
11/14/2022 7:25:12 PM
Supposedly McCarthy ain't getting the votes tomorrow
11/14/2022 7:36:19 PM
The real vote isn't until next year, but it's not like the Freedom Caucus alternatives floating around would be any better than McCarthy.
11/14/2022 8:10:21 PM
I'd laugh if Dems can get a couple people and vote in Cheney
11/14/2022 8:24:38 PM
jesus christ that would be incredible

Media that claimed blood bath also says ny and cali is the reasons dems lose the house
11/15/2022 12:24:47 AM
It's just regular, run of the mill, party in-fighting. No different than people blaming Mitch, instead of Trump for getting crushed. I tune it out pretty easily.
11/15/2022 11:11:07 AM
Ny's 'fault' depends on how you feel about gerrymandering when your party does it. They went ham, the map got struck down, and they ended up with a 'independent"map that had more competitive districts than pre 2022. If their gerrymandered attempt had been a little less DeSantis, maybe there would be a couple more Dem representatives. Personally as long as GOP is gerrymandering, I feel like Dems HAVE to, just sucks NY doesn't own the courts like Florida. But also their Governor candidate ran significantly worse than Biden.I don't think California has similar issues, they just have a ton of districts and are the last to count so it's easy to blame.
11/15/2022 11:19:34 AM
McCarthy won today, but he'll still need to pickup another 30 votes out of ~33 to win in January.
11/15/2022 4:18:07 PM
how bout that kari lake, huh?why are we nominating/electing people just because they were on tv, again?
11/15/2022 5:12:12 PM
^I was about to say "what do you mean 'we'" but then on the way home npr was taking to Michelle Obama and I started thinking about how nice it would be if she ran.
11/15/2022 6:40:28 PM
it was a crowded field of candidates that I hated the most, but Kari Lake was my clear #1I’m paraphrasing, since I can’t remember who wrote it, but someone said she was a boomers dream because she said hate speech in Local News Voice and that fucking camera filter put her over the top

I agree that she was the worst. Future Fox News pundit (if not VP candidate), I'm sure.]
