I don't really think it is that different at all.

I'm seriously not arguing against vaccinations or masks or mandatory vaccinations in the slightest.

I'm just saying that this seems more like the flu (ie, it mutates a lot and we can never totally get rid of it), and less like smallpox (totally eradicated). So IF we can't eradicate it or at least severely minimize it based on new variants forming, what does life look like from now on? The Coz gave a pretty good answer.

I'm not sure it mutates as much as the flu. It seems that way mainly because it's a novel virus that has spread through the global population mostly unchecked by any existing immunity. That's a LOT of opportunities to mutate, and humans with no immunity are readily exploitable. My expectation is that as communities build resistance through either vaccination, or infection and recovery, the apparent rate of mutation will reduce to more controllable levels. I think I understood that influenza is structurally different in ways that favor mutation as compared to coronaviruses. But you're also probably right that it won't be eradicated any time soon if ever, especially with the numbskull anti-vaxers free to impose their ignorance on society.

Welp, a somewhat close family member died from Covid over the weekend. He was unvaxxinated, and obese, and didn't take it seriously. Sounds like it happened pretty quick. He was admitted to the hospital, had to be intubated a day or two later, and his kidneys failed a day or two after that. I already knew about several deaths of family of friends and friends of friends, but this was my first close one.

I'm also following a guy I knew from high school who has intubated for a couple weeks now, not looking good for him either (he's slightly overweight, and unvaxxed I assume).

RNA mutates because it has no proofreading mechanism, and can randomly generate new nucleotide sequences when it's transcribed, thus when it's translated to protein new amino acids are introduced. It's not the structure, it just doesn't have a grammar nazi enabled.
