Better than a zero term senator.

pretty remarkable how little anybody in either NC or at the national level has cared about the election that determines who will replace a Republican Senator in a decade+ long republican-leaning purple state

[Edited on October 6, 2026 at 1:07 PM. Reason : 2024 qntmfred would hardly believe it]

plenty of people care. it just happens to be a race between a beloved NC politician vs. a below replacement level Republican with zero juice

relative to expectations a year ago I mean though.

"beloved NC politician"

he's at 48/41 favorable/unfavorable. +7 is certainly looking good enough to beat whatley's 31/37 but in 2020 cooper was at 48/33. even in 2020 cunningham was 41/39 compared to tillis 33/47 and that +16 edge wasn't enough to prevent tillis from winning. although, to your point, cunningham also had no juice

would you prefer a closer race that would risk flipping a Senate seat?

there’s a reason the GOP just pulled all ad spending in NC

I heard the other day Cooper has literally never lost a statewide election...going back to like 2002 or something

Jim Hunt only lost one time in his career.

To Jesse Helms in the 1984 NC Senate race.

I doubt it will be as favorable for repubs in 2026 as it was in probably was in 1984, with no evidence to back that up
