"You got this from the book, right?"

Yeah. The movie did a pretty good job portraying his struggle to re-acclimate to being away from war (and the subsequent PTSD), the book did a much better job of describing his thinking while in war.

I know you say that with contempt, but sometimes that is not a bad thing. Sometimes you need to be wired pretty different to be successful with what you do. I would think a message board filled with a bunch of engineers would understand this. Every ChemE major I met was really weird, but they had to be that way to understand the complicated shit they studied.

[quote]Partisan views aside, it's a bit more complex than that.
Not surprisingly, you are both completely missing the point.

I say it with contempt because those people are normally insufferable. But at the same time, I definitely agree with your second sentence.

I hope you see the irony in your statement.

Where's the irony in the statement that I don't like dumb rednecks?

Probably should add that I don't like "loud, dumb rednecks." Its not your fault that you're dumb and you grew up in the South. But it is your fault if you let everyone know that you don't like Yankees and think everyone from Texas is better just because they're from Texas.

The irony is that the thing that you hate about them is what allows them to do their jobs so well. And without these people doing their jobs, we would likely be living in a very different world. So while what they do may be incomprehensible to you, it allows you to sleep under the blanket of freedom that these people provide.

I think this guy did his job and did it well. He also lied, came across as a real asshole in his book, and honestly seems motivated by the wrong reasons.

^^^

I don't think you understand the definition of irony. I also admitted that his personality was probably a big contributing factor as to why he was great at what he did. I also respect what he did.

I also think he's narrow minded, ignorant redneck. With that being said...I appreciate what he did for our country and may he RIP.

What reasons do you deem Right and Wrong to go to war for your country?

this feels akin to a fishing story. As the army dude quoted says it wouldnt have changed the impression of his service ... seems like he wanted to cook the books a tad when he didn't need to... that or the bank made a mistake in his favor and he didnt feel the need to correct it.
