Incorrect. The first class upgrade is WAY more expensive then what booking a regular seat used to be.

The $15-$25 extra for extra leg room is definitely worth it for anyone over 6' tall. I fly standby most of the time (you only get ont he plane if there is an open seat) and I almost always get assigned to the exit row because no one wants to spend more on it. For 6 hours worth of comfort, I would have paid for it.

As far as the original issue with the reclining...people used to have manners and communication skills. "Excuse me ma'am, but I have ridiculously long legs and when you recline it puts me in an awefully uncomfortable position." Every time I've said that to someone they have apologized and lifted the seat back.

then it would be a really expensive flight for you. fuel usage is related to weight, so you are costing the airline more money than someone who is traveling light

^^ fuck that, the seats already don't recline far.

i would react very negatively if someone attached some shit like that to my seat...and if someone put partitions up on the armrests, I would probably remove them and break them.

that said,

also, don't copy/paste bomb shit, quagmire02. See you in a day or two.

They caused a plane full of people to be late, miss connections, etc...

They should both spend a stint in jail, and each pay each person on the plane inconvenienced by this $50, and split the extra landing fee, fuel, and crew/pilot labor pay.

If people know causing a spat on a plane lands you a few weeks in the slammer and a five figure fine, that'll civilize people up a bit.

Not reading the entire thread, but the guy is a passive-aggressive, selfish, piece of shit. He knowingly bought a device that would prevent ANYONE from reclining their seat so he could use his own laptop undisturbed and not have to use any spoken communication skills like a decent human being. Sounds a lot like the techie scum that have been invading the Bay Area over the last few years. Their time and comfort is far more valuable than anyone else's and they make everyone around them miserable. The chick should've just pulled the woman card and started crying uncontrollably, forcing the plane to land early so they could boot his Asperger's ass off the plane. Her only mistake was losing her cool and not drumming up sympathy by playing the victim.

^ totally agreed, and she didn't have to cry or do anything, as not following the instructions of a flight attendant is against the law, so they would have taken care of him one way or another, either by forcefully removing his device, or if he resisted, but physically moving him to another part of the plane.

she just had to be PATIENT.

unfortunately, even as the world gets smaller due to technology and what not, people are becoming less and less patient. quite sad, actually.

Until planes remove reclining seats i'm going to recline each and every time. That being said, if it's a transcontinental flight and meals are served i'll make sure to go upright before we're served so as not to spill or jolt the person's meal behind me."

Nah.

Just let the airline sue them. That's 5 figures by itself. No need to spend time in jail. No crime committed.

So I am not sure that I have ever had anyone actually recline in front of me so I dont really know, but I am 6'3 so I imagine it does indeed make it more miserable than the already cramped leg room for me.

My question is lets say you recline in front of me and your seat is now above my knees. Great I get it you get to recline because your chair allows you to do so. However, my legs also allow me to ram my knees into the back of your chair as often as I like for the next few hours, that sure is gonna make being relaxed difficult I'd imagine. Is there any real problem with this?

Yeah, it's fucking assault.

This thread is full of people with childlike views of the world, and I don't mean that in a good way. Like this utterly retarded idea that spewed from the mouth of 3 of 11:

On what Earth? You really think anyone is gonna propose, let alone pass, legislation that heavily criminalizes disagreements on airlines? And you think that somehow, even if this were to somehow happen (and let's set aside that this is an industry the American taxpayer had to bail out, which is yet another barrier to this ridiculous idea), it would leave to people being more civilized? There'd be all kinds of passive and active protest, and the only net result would be a decline in air travel. You're a fucking idiot. You have a baby mind.

I guess let me clarify, obviously the first step is to ask nicely and let them know that it is making things very uncomfortable for you. Again I have never had someone do it to me so I dont really know exactly how cramped you get. I generally shift my weight in my seat every 20 minutes or so and in order to do this I generally have to lift my legs up and what not. If your seat is reclined basically onto my legs I have every right to my personal space as you do to recline your seat and my shifting is going to slam my knees into your seat back. The question I guess is should the person in front of me decide to complain about this am I in the wrong? Or should because you reclined your seat onto my legs I be forced to sit still for the entire flight so as not to make your ride uncomfortable while mine is miserable?

I think that the outcome of all of these incjdebts, at least indirectly, will be the airlines removing the reclining feature all together.

How is paying more for above-average height any different than paying more for being overweight. Some people can't help their weight just like people can't help their height. I realize those that can't help their weight are probably a small minority of obese people, but still. If you don't think it is unreasonable for them to pay more, then the same logic should apply to tall people.

And using dtownral's logic of weight vs fuel consumption, tall people on the average weigh more than short people.

Fuck that, overly obese people should have to buy two seats because they are impeding on the space that someone else paid for. When you start overflowing into the seats beside you it is time to put down the fork or buy an extra seat, I shouldn't have to be even more cramped because I happen to be seated next to a fatty.

It is completely different for tall people, they are the ones that are uncomfortable and the only way they make others uncomfortable is if they recline their seats (but that isn't taking up any more room than what is paid for so who cares).

If you are taking up more space than the space between the two arm rests such that you impede on the people sitting beside you. If you can't sit in your seat with the arm rests down then you should buy the seat beside you.

aaaaaaand that brings us to the main point of this thread - you'll never make everyone happy, so just try to make enough people happy enough to make enough money.

If all the seats were lazy-boy sized with a privacy screen in-between, I bet there would be people complaining about the seats being too soft and them being too much separated from their companions in the adjacent seat.

Oh. and by the way, smoothcrim you should fly United. You get your toe room back plus their frequent flyer programs is actually useful. Or, better yet, Virgin. Or Korean. Or Quatar. Or Emirates.

Those are Vans off-the-wall, brah! Straight from Endless Grind. And "relaxed fit" jeans, probably from same shop. Funny thing is that I was technically homeless at the time, traveling for work and living out of hotels. I dress better now, but mostly fly economy Oh, how times have changed! One lesson I learned through all of this, the best way to make a coach seat feel more like first class is to drink three or more of those airplane-size bottles of wine. Literally the cheapest worthwhile upgrade that you can make.

i haven't flown united in years. i heard they're better now. i'm in ATL though, so i get delta direct pretty much everywhere. they also finally got reciprocity with virgin so now i get upgrades there too

the best part of this FWP thread, after flying around europe on a bunch of commuter jets, you see how even the shitty american airlines are worlds better than the european ones. no free food (or drink), LESS leg room, weight limits on carry ons, and ridiculous fees for everything. i'd fly god damn continental 10/10 times before i flew ryanair again.

What a load of shit. Everyone on Earth can control their weight enough to fit into a seat. There is no weight disorder that violates the laws of physics. Obesity doesn't involve spontaneous generation of matter.

Height is fixed. Tall people (myself included) cannot modify it.

Charging tall people more is not a reasonable solution. Charging slightly more for reclining seats and limiting them to the rear portion of coach would work. You can sleep without your seat going back all of 15 degrees. You can go without sleeping for the duration of pretty much any flight that doesn't involve going to New Zealand. If these things are important to you, you can shell out an extra few bucks. If those aren't important to you, you don't have to spend it. And those of us who can't change the fact that we're 6'6" and are forced into coach by our employers won't want to slit your fucking throats.

^once those extra fees start adding up, most RyanAir/Aerlingus/etc flights don't really end up being *that* cheap.

I was on a US Airways shuttle flight the other day (CLT - TPA, I think) and it was glorious. The plane was brand new and I've never seen that much legroom not being in economy comfort (or 1st/business). I kept thinking I *must* be in an emergency exit row, but I wasn't. shit was cray.
