Might be using this for the first time this weekend to get to and from the Beerfest. Interested to see how it works out.

^If you are using it to get home from Beerfest this weekend it's probably going to be 3-4x surge pricing unless you leave early, or go hang out somewhere else downtown for an hour or so before you call it.

We usually get there an hour early or so and hit up a pregame drink or two at Tir-Na-Nog

Make sure to use code meganc3 for a free ride I've started using uber in lieu of driving somewhere (concert, ballgame, etc) and paying for parking. I'll have them drop me off/pick me up a block or so from the venue. The cost is usually equivalent or less, and I don't have to deal with sitting in a garage and I can drink without worry. Uber4lyfe

I frequently use Uber exactly as slappy1 has described. In fact I often use it to travel to the same places she does. Usually I wait 30-45 minutes though hoping that I will get the same driver she had. I spend most of the ride sniffing the seat and microfucking my jeans.

I do some part time driving for Uber in the Burlington, VT market and I can tell you a few things. 1. We hate surge just as much as you do (many of us do anyway). Sure it is extra money, but it just pisses off your rider and basically eliminates any chance of getting a 5 star rating in a lot of cases (Anything below 5* is no good as if you fall below 4.6 you are deactivated ie fired). There are people who don't understand the driver has absolutely no control over the fare. 2. Place the pin where you will actually be. There is nothing worse than showing up at the pin that is in the wrong spot only to have angry rider blame you for where they put it. In fact that may end up resulting in the driver cancelling to avoid what is almost a guaranteed bad rating. 3. Not having water/phone charger is not fair grounds for rating below 5 stars. I do offer bottles of water in my car, but I don't have a universal phone charger for passenger use as of now. I will say they are tactics that certainly help riders rate you 5 stars though even if there is a minor glitch.4. The ratings system is severely weighted against the driver. I have mentioned 5 stars in every one of these points because that is essentially what you have to get to prevent being deactivated. Obviously there are bad drivers who deserve low ratings and to be fired, but basically 4 out of the 5 rating choices work against you. Only a 5 star rating works in your favor (Again below 4.6 and you are out in most markets). Drunks and college students tend to tank ratings the most, while young professionals during the day tend to consistently rate 5's here.

One more thing: I would expect the quality of the service to decline in some cities if rates are cut too much. I am lucky to be in a $2 per mile market, but some are actually under a dollar at this point. In other words it is becoming much harder for drivers to actually turn a profit in some locales.
9/8/2015 6:11:39 PM
If we don't want to chat with the driver, what is the easiest/best way to let them know?
9/8/2015 7:13:50 PM
That is a good question. I know you usually can tell pretty quick after the initial greeting (at least I can). I usually let the passenger control the conversation. If it doesn't go past a line or two than I don't push it. I wouldn't be offended if someone told me they didn't want to talk.[Edited on September 8, 2015 at 9:05 PM. Reason : .]

"I was kicked off a reality TV show for allegations of sexual impropriety" is usually a conversation stopper, JT
9/9/2015 8:46:47 AM
LOL yeah that would pretty much do it. If the driver has any basic social skills they should be able to tell when the passenger does or does not want to talk. When the rider is immediately quiet and staring at their phone texting, that is a pretty good clue .
9/9/2015 8:51:25 AM
I earned $16 in 1 hour of driving on 3 trips for a total of about 20 miles. Really not worth it based on that. And the constant text messaging is annoying. I told the fucks to temporarily deactivate me due to a surgery, but I still get texts and emails every day, half of them being warnings about being deactivated for not driving... ಠ_ಠ
9/9/2015 9:11:40 AM
^ ouch yeah that is tough. I am thankfully still in a $2 per mile market 9 and 30 cents a minute), but most are dropping to $1 or even worse. Some cities are 75 to 80 cents a mile. This is of course before Uber takes their 20%.
9/9/2015 3:28:37 PM
The car there wanted to return his last rides phone and kept my meter running through that shit show. Got that part taken off the bill at least. Then the ride back asks to go off route for no reason but we insisted no.

Lyft sucks in smaller markets. I used it in NYC a couple weeks ago and still had some ride credits. Saturday night, midnight. Lyft is on a 35% surcharge with only 3 cars in uptown Charlotte. Switch over to Uber, have a car there in 3 minutes and am home for $6. Lyft app was promptly deleted.
11/9/2015 8:57:52 AM
Back in early October my lady friend and I tried to get an über from south end to Elizabeth. On a Friday night at only fucking 11pm, uber was a 2.5x or 3x surcharge with a $18 minimum. At that rate we would have come out cheaper with a cab. Needless to say I've since converted her to lyft.

8/31/2016 3:19:25 PM
My market has dropped to $1.18 per mile and so it is no longer worth driving here unless there is a decent surge.
8/31/2016 3:34:33 PM
what is that a result of?
8/31/2016 3:59:14 PM
I wish I knew considering we don't have Lyft as a competitor. They try to feed you nonsense that lower fares will result in you earning more money but that is complete crap I can assure you.
8/31/2016 4:02:02 PM
Basic supply and demand.
8/31/2016 5:16:37 PM
Well yeah but demand was just fine before they cut the rates here. Drivers were making decent money and so was Uber. There was no real need to cut.
8/31/2016 6:05:19 PM
What do you net hourly after all your expenses? I feel like they could make money if they were smart about how they used their writeoffs but most are too lazy to do the research...I feel like they've made the fares too cheap.., like it cost me $10 to go a long way... if I've decided I'm gonna use uber the extra $2- $4 makes zero difference to me and it's already half as cheap as a cab... but to the driver it really adds up.I would imagine fares are based on the surrounding job market and cost of living... i.e no way anyone is gonna do this job for less than $20/hr in raleigh because they could just go get a real job... but if you live in Fayetteville getting a real job isn't an option

All this bad PR for Uber has made their rides unbelievably cheap right now. I would normally take BART to the airport since it's about $10 each way, but the other day I paid around $4 for an Uber pool during rush hour and I had the whole car to myself The CEO may be a POS, but I just wanna get places for cheap. The Walton family is terrible and treats employees like garbage, yet people still shop at Walmart anyway.[Edited on April 26, 2017 at 11:53 AM. Reason : .]
