Quote :
"How do Tonga, Loyola Marymount and rugby tie into the Winter Olympics? Very oddly. The story of Bruno Banani, or Fuahea Semi, as he was formerly known, is one of the weirdest in recent memory and its being picked up by news outlets all over the world, thanks the ingenuity of a Loyola Marymount rugby alum.

Tonga wanted a winter Olympian but needed sponsorship money and help of those familiar with a winter sport to help make it happen. Tongan princess Salote Mafile'o Pilolevu Tuita got in touch with a marketing firm that operates in Germany, the United States and Peru – Makai. The owner and founder of that company is Loyola Marymount rugby alum Robbie Thain.

Makai hatched the plan that would lead to Semi, an amateur Tongan rugby player and student, changing his name to Bruno Banani, that of a German underwear company, moving to Germany and eventually becoming the first Tongan ever in the Winter Games.

There are strict policies in place in regards to sponsorship of Olympic athletes, so Bruno Banani the underwear company wouldn’t have been able to sponsor Fuahea Semi in the traditional sense if he were going to remain eligible for the Games. But Makai found a loophole in the IOC’s regulations – have Semi legally become Bruno Banani.

"The Bruno Banani Olympics campaign is a perfect example of how our culture drives original thinking and resourcefulness. We embrace internal entrepreneurship and project ownership. We are proud that our ethos produces inspirational campaigns globally." Thain told the Sacramento Bee, "When we started Makai in Europe in 2006, we wanted to revolutionize advertising and marketing there. We were passionate for guerilla marketing.'Bruno Banani goes Olympic' is typical of our exceptional marketing ideas."

Banani finished 34th, 33rd, 32nd and 30th in his runs this weekend, failing to compete for a medal. But he did represent Tonga in the Winter Olympics, which was the goal all along.

USA CURLING SPOILER BELOW****************

Goddam we are choke artists. Every time we have needed a shot this year(and in 2010) we fuck it up. We turn a guaranteed 1-2 pts into points for the other team. Might be time for a new skip

We're getting our ass handed to us in curling; men and women.

The winless women GB team just scored 7 in an end on us.

I give up on the olympics this year. It's just like the olympics in London. With the time difference, there are 10,000 spoilers posted on the web, TV and everywhere else several hours before the shit even airs on american TV.

Whats the fucking point of even showing the event on TV then if i already know whats going to happen because i accidently clicked the wrong button and get a gigantic spoiler thrust in my face.

Muirheads team is world champions but USA women was completely outclassed. It was a horrendous game in general, giving up two steals in one and two, but that fourth end was just a train wreck.

US lead wrecks on a guard with her second
US second wrecks on a guard with her second after throwing what had to be a poor delivery.
At this point it was at least two for Muirhead but holy hell did the shit hit the fan for the Americans.
US third's first stone was terribly judged by the sweepers for weight and they left it short. At one point one of them called out 8 meaning back of the four foot, the stone ends up a 4, front of the house, leaving an easy hit.
The US thirds second stone is, I'm not sure what to call it, just terrible and it runs right through the house.
In the meantime muirheads been piling into the house sitting five
Now brown is stuck just cutting them down, her first draw goes astray and rolls open
Her second draw was actually a really good attempt and pretty close to being a great shot but it too crashed and rolled open for the easy hit by Eve for seven.

Multiple bad shots by the team, they have a chance at playoffs but I don't see it, the team is curling really poorly right now. Might be time for the alternate to come in.

Mixed doubles curling has been proposed as an Olympic event, not accepted yet. 1 man, 1 woman per team same scoring and general rules with some slight modifications. It's a quicker game 5 stones delivered per end and a lot more physical, delivering player typically sweeps their own rocks.

Skip and second are the same from '10, but a new lead and third.

John Shuster (the '10 and '14 skip) won a bronze as lead in '06.

So doubles luge.

What the hell.

I mean who came up with this? Someone who just decided that Germany needs a couple extra medals, so they said "hey let's stack another person on a one man sled and call it a different event!"

He was comparing the Russian coach, who lost to the US hockey team in the 1980 miracle on ice, to the John Wooden coached UCLA team that lost to NCSU in the ncaa tourney

Why does NBC pretend like the tape delay stuff is happening live, and the announcers are acting all surprised and shit? Mother fucker you already know what happens.

i dont know about you, but for the little bit i watched, i heard matt lauer using the past tense. and i would assume that announcers were recorded live so you get the same excitement from them.
