Sucks. Super nice guy, but got to be done, I suppose
12/30/2013 10:52:52 PM
Super horrible hockey player
12/30/2013 11:37:27 PM
Wow what a 3rd period
12/31/2013 9:27:28 PM
What a fucking dumb extra two for Staal to take. Did he think he wouldn't get one by smashing his stick and screaming for thirty seconds?

Sounds like Gleason will be gone by the end of the day. Scratched last night and told by management to sit out of practice today. Looks like Liles is coming back from Toronto (after a good 5 years of JR coveting him).
1/1/2014 1:16:05 PM
Leafs fan here. What are we getting in Gleason? over the hill? pylon?
1/1/2014 1:45:24 PM
Pretty much. He's still a relatively "tough" defenseman but has really gone downhill the past couple seasons in terms of speed (not that anyone ever would have considered him fast) and willingness to block shots. Has next to no offensive ability.
1/1/2014 1:56:51 PM
and what are we getting in Liles?
1/1/2014 1:58:14 PM
The Toronto media is going to eat Gleason alive.
1/1/2014 2:05:39 PM
Liles is still a pretty good puck moving dman. he'll be fine in reduced minutes (think as a 5th or 6th dman) and 2nd unit PP.
1/1/2014 2:18:26 PM
Congrats to Faulk for being named to the US Olympic team. Gold medal or bust!
1/1/2014 5:52:38 PM
weren't we supposed to get liles like 4 years ago

[Leafs fan] Enjoy Liles, he's not mean't for large markets like Toronto. Good vision, standard and safe defenseman. Expect him to produce on a Komisarek level and after his contract runs out they'll be able to sign him for much less than $3.8mil/year. Really, his Komi 2.0.My opinion is that the Canes need to ship Skinner and/or Eric Staal. Skinner is too small and is playing 30% less each season due to injuries, therefore producing 30% less. There is no telling what the next concussion will due to his future. Staal isn't playing with conviction anymore, he's simply making a paycheck. I'll be surprised if the Canadians bring him to Sochi. Few guys JR should be targeting with a 'most bang for the bucks' strategy:Reilly Smith Dustin PennerBrandon Saad Mikhail Grabovski

Ship Skinner and Staal and get Grabovski.Got it.

Nothing Mooseballs said made any sort of sense...or was even accurate.[Edited on January 3, 2014 at 5:26 PM. Reason : oops, size. IDEGAF]

Just to make my point clear:Here is the current St. Louis Blues payroll and roster (3rd in NHL) - http://capgeek.com/blues/-4 players in the top 60 for total points-combined ~$13 million in payroll hitHere is the current Hurricanes payroll and roster (6th in the Metro) - http://capgeek.com/hurricanes/-2 players in the top 60 for total points -combined ~$14 million in payroll hitI'm just saying JR and crew should redistribute the wealth if they want to win a cup.
1/3/2014 5:48:51 PM
st louis just gave alex steen an idiotic extension on a career year that couldn't ever happen again everway to pick an overperforming situation as evidence, lets see those cap numbers in two yearsall im saying is who are you really going to get to replace these big money players. and please dont say grabovski. it does suck to have ruutu and gleason/liles signed to stupid deals, and cam hasn't had the best season, but as a small market team those big deals are the price you have to pay. The only reason Skinner has the contract he has is because he is a first round draft pick, just like Steen. Any other player with his size and susceptibility to injury would be on two-way or less. Yes, when he plays he is Carolina's playmaker. But why bear the burden of a $5million+ contract when there is uncertainty? You can get two guys with more size and equal talent for the same payroll hit, like Penner and Saad.

That was the implication, yes. And less than NHL doesn't necessarily mean AHL.

I guess I'm the only one on this thread who believes the Canes won't win the cup this season. But if holding on to your heroes means more to you, then all power to ya. The Canes won't win another cup with this roster, and in order to accommodate players that can win a cup they'll have to make room at the top of the payroll.
1/3/2014 10:27:37 PM
You must be smoking something if you think the rest of us think the Canes can win the cup. We'll be happy just to make the playoffs at this point. You act as if Penner and Saad are folks we can just go out and get. Doesn't work that way. They might be worth $5M now, but I promise you they won't cost the same if they continue to play at their level. Someone like Toronto or NYR will overpay to get them..and that's if their respective clubs don't resign them to something lucrative.[Edited on January 3, 2014 at 11:08 PM. Reason : .]

Regardless, sacrifices will have to be made and players will be shifted around. I'm a Toronto fan through and through; I've seen just about every strategy in the book. I'm saying it takes years to stack aroster with talent, health, and leadership. It's my opinion that the Canes should pursue alternative options outside of their current roster. Winning a cup comes with the expectation/understanding that you'll win another one.
1/3/2014 11:44:25 PM
By all means the Canes should most definitely trade what could be the best natural goal scorer they've had in their entire history. And they should replace him with Dustin Penner and Brandon Saad.
1/4/2014 12:21:20 AM
when you offload players and start fresh, you know who you keep? your best young players.a 21 year old with 19 goals in 30 games sounds about right.
1/4/2014 12:21:24 AM
You'd get a 21-year-old with a stanley cup ring.
1/4/2014 12:45:43 AM
I'm still trying to wrap my mind around how you're defending loses. You're a stanley cup winning franchise, a recent stanley cup winning franchise at that. Tell me how wrong I am about making drastic changes but at least I acknowledge that 6th in the metro isn't acceptable for a team with their name on the cup.
1/4/2014 1:02:55 AM
By that logic, our management is doing at least five times better than Edmonton. And I'll take a Calder winner with no Cup over a guy who has one goal in 23 playoff games any day. Well, except Andrew Raycroft.[Edited on January 4, 2014 at 2:31 AM. Reason : 1]
1/4/2014 2:20:32 AM
If you know exactly what to do to make teams better, why don't you offer your services to Toronto's front office? They need the help more than Carolina.
1/4/2014 9:51:11 AM
Classic argument right there...The Leafs, and their front office, are doing just fine.
1/4/2014 12:21:24 PM
I guess they're doing okay if they finally made the playoffs for the first time last year since 2003-2004, and the fact they haven't won the cup in 45 years. Brighter skies are ahead!
1/4/2014 2:37:54 PM
1/4/2014 2:58:03 PM
That guy we should trade getting it done again. 16 goals in 16 games.
1/5/2014 9:26:42 PM
So we need to hurry up and trade that skinner fellow huh
1/5/2014 9:27:50 PM
