$4/hr

I worked in a fast food restaurant for 4 years. I did not deserve to be paid $15/hr.

I remember reading somewhere that the minimum wage at fast food places in Australia is around $15-20.Anyone know anything about it?[Edited on August 29, 2013 at 4:52 PM. Reason : .]

I made $15/hr in my first job out of college. It was in Biotech and required a BS in Biological Sciences. But then again the company covered 100% of the benefits, so that's pretty much apples to oranges.Carry on[Edited on August 29, 2013 at 4:55 PM. Reason : a]

^ Either that or they only have 2 people working per shift.

robots assemble the food, take the orders, and it rolls down a conveyer belt onto your tray. you py with a credit card. there is one human present to maintain the robots and keep koalas away.

Or it depends on the local economy, and the fact that it is AUS Dollar, not US Dollar
8/29/2013 4:58:33 PM
8/29/2013 4:59:28 PM
^^ That would still be $13.35 USD on the low end[Edited on August 29, 2013 at 5:00 PM. Reason : a]

what about standard of living?
8/29/2013 5:03:53 PM
actually, unemployment for unskilled and young workers in australia increased when the minimum wage was raisedand also, minimum wage in australia for a 16 year old is only $6.03/hr. and for the 18 year old fry cook it is $11.18/hr. they have similar differences for trainees and apprentices. and all of those minimum wages are only for people not covered by awards or agreements. their system is nothing like ours.http://www.fairwork.gov.au/employment/pages/default.aspx

From the other thread:

16 year olds get usd 8 per hour.http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/08/the-magical-world-where-mcdonalds-pays-15-an-hour-its-australia/278313/And here you go, actual wages of the workershttp://www.sdansw.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Proposed-Agreement-Wage-Tables1.pdfThat first link is a very interesting read. Here is something that will infuriate mcd workers in murrca

8/29/2013 11:31:27 PM
cost of living in general in australia is higher than most of the US (if not all) comparatively
8/29/2013 11:40:16 PM
Have these mofos ever heard of or been to a Sheetz? They might want to go to one and see how you order food. Because that's precisely what 15/hr for unskilled labour will cause.
8/29/2013 11:49:16 PM
That would be a great thing.
8/29/2013 11:56:46 PM
except for the many people who no longer have jobs on account of it
8/30/2013 12:13:20 AM
Man I got like 4.75 and it sucked. Boy those days blew in HS.
8/30/2013 12:17:24 AM
Now you would be creating higher quality jobs. You'd nos have software design, hardware production, manufacturing, sales and upkeep of these automated mcahines.
8/30/2013 12:18:41 AM
riiiiiiiiiight. And those people who can't even get a job flipping burgers are helped by those jobs because...
8/30/2013 12:36:16 AM
A few good points but its overwhelmed by the dumb in this thread .... Granted it is chit chat.
8/30/2013 1:04:15 AM
I don't care for fast food, so this doesn't affect me.But fuck a $15/hr pay increase.
8/30/2013 1:20:50 AM
Pay them minimum wage, fast food jobs are not careers, they are part time jobs for students and old people. If you don't make enough money at your job, GET ONE THAT PAYS MORE.
8/30/2013 7:52:30 AM
not making enough money at your part-time job? here's an idea; get a second part-time job!Heaven forbid you work more than 39 hours in a week.
8/30/2013 9:00:52 AM
on my fb earlier i saw someone complaining that her and her husband both work two jobs making minimum wage, and complained that in addition to unspecified government benefits this was not enough to make ends meet.has two kids.
8/30/2013 9:36:04 AM
stop having children you can't afford?Christ, I'm starting to sound like my father
8/30/2013 10:38:12 AM
No, you're starting to sound like a person who makes decisions based on thoughtful consideration, weighing the positives and negatives and how said decisions will impact you in the short, medium, and long term. You know, like an adult, which despite their age many people aren't.

8/30/2013 6:23:03 PM
I dunno about $15/hour for everybody, but there are a few businesses I frequent that each have one or two awesome employees that have worked there forever, and I hope these people are making $15 an hour.Does it help them if I write glowing letters to corporate about how awesome they are? Do any of y'all know?
8/30/2013 6:48:18 PM
They'll just tell you to tip more if you like them so much.
8/30/2013 6:53:52 PM
Dang, it would be so weird to try to tip these people. You're awesome. Here's ten bucks.
8/30/2013 7:00:08 PM
not making enough money at your part-time job? here's an idea; get a second part-time job!Heaven forbid you work more than 39 hours in a week.Fuck these striking people, I wouldn't be surprised if they got fired.
8/30/2013 7:03:47 PM
I hope they all did. it's an entry level job, they have no business striking. they are EXPENDABLE by their nature.
8/30/2013 7:09:20 PM
let the industry fold.its bad for us anyway.im not gonna pay someone more to kill me.think of the children.
8/30/2013 7:25:26 PM
I dunno...it seems like this is one of those situations where it's generally not advisable to take some hardline prick position. Nobody's gonna pay them $15/hour, and they're still gonna be working in fast food...so we should all probably just keep getting our cheap food and shut the fuck up about it. No need to talk shit about how little their labor is worth.
8/30/2013 7:26:25 PM
theyre gonna spit in that shit more often nowget ready for a higher percentage of assburgers

I ran the numbers in the Soap Box and my best estimate is that the base wage for McDonald's in Australia in 2012 was equivalent to $9.78 per hour in most of the US in terms of purchasing power: http://thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=638672&page=2#15898798
8/31/2013 7:10:12 AM
^ check yo numbuzz... Go back to soap box.
8/31/2013 9:19:54 AM
The demonstration of how to account for PPP was fairly sound, but the starting data were incorrect: I read headline figures that had been converted to USD and then rounded to the nearest dollar as if they were AUD figures precise to the cent.*hangs head in shame*
8/31/2013 9:59:19 AM
I ate at subway on Thursday not knowing this was going on.Now I feel bad.And they probably spit in my sandwich too
8/31/2013 10:25:16 AM
How would they spit in your sandwich at Subway? 100% of the preparation is done 2 feet in front of you. Also, ewwww Subway.
8/31/2013 11:19:00 AM
I hear sandwich artists make the big bucks.
8/31/2013 11:19:51 AM
More than most artists.
8/31/2013 11:21:52 AM
zing
8/31/2013 11:29:15 AM
I cant wait until they do this so I can work a part time fast food job on top of my salary job.we can now all work fast food. get with the wave people. MONEY
