I worked in a fast food restaurant for 4 years. I did not deserve to be paid $15/hr.

I remember reading somewhere that the minimum wage at fast food places in Australia is around $15-20.

Anyone know anything about it?

I made $15/hr in my first job out of college. It was in Biotech and required a BS in Biological Sciences.

But then again the company covered 100% of the benefits, so that's pretty much apples to oranges.

Carry on

I can only assume that the country has completely collapsed and fallen into economic ruin.

robots assemble the food, take the orders, and it rolls down a conveyer belt onto your tray. you py with a credit card. there is one human present to maintain the robots and keep koalas away.

Or it depends on the local economy, and the fact that it is AUS Dollar, not US Dollar

Yes it is 15. Head to the soap box, where it has been linked and discussed.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Interesting how the discussion is so different between chit chat and soap box. Soap box is full of links and citations from news sites and even intellectual sources, plus calculations too. Chit chat, well....

^^ That would still be $13.35 USD on the low end

actually, unemployment for unskilled and young workers in australia increased when the minimum wage was raised

and also, minimum wage in australia for a 16 year old is only $6.03/hr. and for the 18 year old fry cook it is $11.18/hr. they have similar differences for trainees and apprentices. and all of those minimum wages are only for people not covered by awards or agreements. their system is nothing like ours.

From the other thread:

"McDonald's workers here, in Santa Monica, make $13.82 our minimum wage. So, we can pretend to be a surf town and not just a town where you can get a $300 bottle of wine with dinner while watching the sunset over the ocean."

16 year olds get usd 8 per hour.

http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/08/the-magical-world-where-mcdonalds-pays-15-an-hour-its-australia/278313/

And here you go, actual wages of the workers

http://www.sdansw.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Proposed-Agreement-Wage-Tables1.pdf

That first link is a very interesting read. Here is something that will infuriate mcd workers in murrca

Quote :
"So there's a certain irony that in Australia, where the minimum wage for full-time adult workers already comes out to about $14.50 an hour, McDonald's staffers were busy scoring an actual raise. On July 24, the country's Fair Work Commission approved a new labor agreement between the company and its employees guaranteeing them up to a 15 percent pay increase by 2017.

And here's the kicker: Many Australian McDonald's workers were already making more than the minimum to begin with.

The land down under is, of course, not the only high-wage country in the world where McDonald's does lucrative business. The company actually earns more revenue out of Europe than than it does from the United States. France, with its roughly $12.00 hourly minimum, has more than 1,200 locations. (Australia has about 900). "

Have these mofos ever heard of or been to a Sheetz? They might want to go to one and see how you order food. Because that's precisely what 15/hr for unskilled labour will cause.

Pay them minimum wage, fast food jobs are not careers, they are part time jobs for students and old people. If you don't make enough money at your job, GET ONE THAT PAYS MORE.

here's an idea; get a second part-time job!

Heaven forbid you work more than 39 hours in a week.

on my fb earlier i saw someone complaining that her and her husband both work two jobs making minimum wage, and complained that in addition to unspecified government benefits this was not enough to make ends meet.

has two kids.

No, you're starting to sound like a person who makes decisions based on thoughtful consideration, weighing the positives and negatives and how said decisions will impact you in the short, medium, and long term. You know, like an adult, which despite their age many people aren't.

the entire nation is helped by the economic growth and growth of the middle class. now they have more government funding available for tech school to work on these machines. education would be better too in the long run. it would be better for the whole country.

I dunno about $15/hour for everybody, but there are a few businesses I frequent that each have one or two awesome employees that have worked there forever, and I hope these people are making $15 an hour.

Does it help them if I write glowing letters to corporate about how awesome they are? Do any of y'all know?

I dunno...it seems like this is one of those situations where it's generally not advisable to take some hardline prick position. Nobody's gonna pay them $15/hour, and they're still gonna be working in fast food...so we should all probably just keep getting our cheap food and shut the fuck up about it. No need to talk shit about how little their labor is worth.

I ran the numbers in the Soap Box and my best estimate is that the base wage for McDonald's in Australia in 2012 was equivalent to $9.78 per hour in most of the US in terms of purchasing power: http://thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=638672&page=2#15898798

The demonstration of how to account for PPP was fairly sound, but the starting data were incorrect: I read headline figures that had been converted to USD and then rounded to the nearest dollar as if they were AUD figures precise to the cent.

Also, ewwww Subway.
