hah, also a VA resident now.

I think because of the long standing GOP state government here, the wingnut tea party types haven't gotten a strong foothold here.

NC was under democrat control for so long that when so many democratic seats were lost, it was to the craziest of the crazy. I blame Easley and Perdue for this shit too.

"Since January of this year GOP Legislators have introduced a litany of bills and proposed resolutions, so many, it's hard to keep count, but these stand out as being among the nuttiest:

1). Slashing Early Voting days and doing away entirely with many Early Voting sites.

2). Ending Early Voting on Sunday's when most people are off from work.

3). End straight ticket voting.

4). Mandating a two year waiting period before anyone can obtain a divorce.

5). Dismantling the State's Latino Outreach Office.

6). Shredding State agreements and contracts made by previous
Administrations.

7). Rejecting fully-funded Medicaid expansion for 500,000 uninsured citizens in North Carolina.

8). Cutting unemployment Insurance benefits to those still looking for work.

9). Usurping local control over local zoning and home standard matters

10). Demanding background checks & drug tests for families who apply for food stamps.

11). Resisting background checks & drug tests for people who want to stockpile more and more guns.

12). Enacting Voter I.D. laws when there is no evidence of voter fraud in North Carolina. Interesting, that the GOP wants everybody to show a pictured I.D. for
voting but do not require a photo on a license to carry a concealed gun around.

13). Unleashing unlimited Fracking licenses without proof that it will be safe for N.C.'s environment.

14). Proposing a resolution that puts one religion above all others and that religion becoming the official faith doctrine of County and State Governments.

15). Systematically changing the way local school boards are elected by redrawing school district lines and mandating that more members are
elected "At-Large" instead of representing neighborhoods or districts.

16). That authority be unilaterally taken away from local County
School Boards to build new schools and maintain existing schools and
that henceforth schools will be build under the authority of County
Commissioners and that all schools will be "owned" by County
Commissioners and not the local School System or the tax payers of any
given County.

17). The bright idea to take resources from public schools to
provide tax payer funded vouchers to be awarded to some parents to pay
tuition for charter schools, private schools, even home schooling.

18). My favorite wingnut idea .... a ban on women whose breast
nipples can be seen beneath her blouse. Apparently the Honorables be
looking real hard.

19). Instead of encouraging ex-convicts to integrating back into
society after they have paid their debt to society along comes a bill
to make it more difficult for these people to be able to exercise their
Constitutional right to vote.

20). A bill proposed to levy a hefty tax on any parent who claims
their children as dependents, if said child chooses to register and
vote while away from home in college.

21). Now comes along "Honest Bob's" bill to eliminate ethics
safeguards and allow lobbyist to bestow upon lawmakers any type of
gifts, money, trips, meals or any other kind of perks
without it having
to be reported to Election Boards or Ethics Committees. Strange logic,
sinister intent and corrupt motives all rolled up into one bill.

22). A bill to remove all teacher assistants from classrooms in
public schools and increase the number of students allowable in all
core subject classes.

23). A bill to terminate N.C.'s renewable energy program even when
there is evidence that it is currently among the State's top job
producers.

24). A bill to amend the N.C. Constitution from allowing persons with mental
handicaps such as Cerebral Palsy or Brain Cancer or citizens confined to psychiatric hospitals from having the right to vote.

25). A GOP inspired bill for the Legislature to appoint a Study Commission
to start the process of North Carolina printing it's own currency and that this new money could not be spent or exchanged in any other state or territory. Thus, currency now printed by the U.S. Treasurer would become obsolete in North Carolina. Sorta like Confederate money.

26). A bill to legalize the dropping of live possums in a box during annual New Years Eve Celebrations in North Carolina

27). A bill which grants the freedom of those who have permits to carry
their Colt 45's, 357 Magnums and Smith & Wesson pistols into public
sporting events, restaurants, bars, and honky tonk juke joints.

28). A GOP inspired bill to reconstitute predatory "Pay Day Lending"
which the Legislature outlawed in 2006. With such a measure street
corner establishments like the ones who sell lottery tickets would be
allowed to lend money at the return rate of over 200%.

29). Now comes a new GOP inspired bill which mandates that children in
all North Carolina schools must be taught that by having an abortion will
reduce their chances of having healthy babies later on. Talk about
fear mongering ....this is it.

30). A bill which prohibits and criminalizes the sale of renewable
energy, environmental friendly, all-electric automobiles to anyone within the
State of North Carolina through Internet or person-to-person sales..
Although Internet and person-to-person sales are daily transactions
within North Carolina, everything from household wares, clothing,
motorcycles, boats and even airplanes can be purchased over the
Internet and through person-to-person sales. This one, for sure, if it
passes, will be headed to the Courts.

31). A wingnut bill which will approve municipal and county garbage
removal services to allow their trucks to leak smelly garbage liquids
from the bottom of their trucks. The bill reduces standards now in
place for trucks to have bottoms which are leak proof to bottoms which
are so-called leak resistant. 'Twas not that long ago when garbage
trucks could be seen spilling large amounts of nasty liquids from their
trucks and it was not uncommon to see disgusting wiggling maggots on
city streets and rural roadways. Brilliant idea to go back to those days ... just brilliant.

32). This just in. The NC GOP Senate is taking up a bill to loosening cigarette smoking laws. If passed it would repeal previous smoking bans and disallow Municipal & County units of governments from banning smoking on Community College Campuses and allow smoking at all college & university outdoor sporting events statewide.

Taken all together it would seem prudent, at least to those who are capable of thinking prudently, to surmise that the current crop of right wing fanatics are out of control and are like bulls running amok in a china closet.

Currently being argued in the NC House:

HB730: expanding the definition of "religious employers" so more employers can opt to deny birth control coverage on their employee health plans if they have a moral objection to the use of contraception.

Of course, there's a provision to provide you the opportunity to bring a doctor's note to justify if you're taking birth control pills/shots or using contraceptive devices (IUDs, diaphragms) for a reason OTHER than contraception.

But, again: "I'd like to discuss my birth control options and medications with my boss," said no one ever.

http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/06/11/2953689/road-worrier-new-transportation.html

Funny (but not surprising) what happened once the state and national party leaders got ahold of McCrory.

This guy helped form one of the best city transportation departments in the country while mayor of Charlotte. He got the Blue Line built. He went speaking all over the state about the importance of a diversity of transportation choices and how rail was an important economic development tool. He was a very refreshing example of someone who realized that transportation and infrastructure should not be a partisan issue.

Now? Fuck it. If you don't want to drive for 100% of trips you can get the fuck out.

the Highway Trust Fund system was pretty terrible for exactly the reasons described in that piece, it was all about dividing the money among districts and did a terrible job dealing with large projects and maintenance.

I don't disagree with that, but they are replacing it with an equally terrible system. How is rail not a regional or statewide issue? Of course I never had any hope for bike/ped funding. They REALLY hate that stuff.

Sen. Thom Goolsby on the protests he calls "Moron Mondays"

The circus came to the State Capitol this week, complete with clowns, a carnival barker and a sideshow. The “Reverend” Barber was decked out like a prelate of the Church of Rome (no insult is meant to Catholics), complete with stole and cassock. All he was missing was a miter and the ensemble would have been complete.

Several hundred people — mostly white, angry, aged former hippies — appeared and screeched into microphones, talked about solidarity and chanted diatribes. It was “liberal theater” at its best. Just like having a honey bun and double espresso for breakfast, the impact of it all left the participants jittery and empty in the end.

Never short on audacity, the Loony Left actually named their gathering “Moral Monday.” Between the screaming, foot stomping and disjointed speeches, it appeared more like “Moron Monday.” The gathering was supposed to influence legislators. However, no one thought to bring out any senate or house member from either party.

Quote :
"Best known among the bill's provisions is a requirement that the Department of Health and Human Services develop regulations for abortion clinics similar to ambulatory surgical centers. Similar language in other states has required abortion clinics to pay for hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of upgrades.

Only one abortion clinic in North Carolina meets those guidelines. Although the House added language that those rules should be written without "unduly restricting access," opponents of the bill said that line was merely a legislative fig leaf. "

Quote :
"Other provisions in the bill include:

*Requires physicians to be "present" for the entire surgical abortion procedure.
*Allows any health care provider, not just doctors and nurses, to opt out of participating in abortion procedures.
* Prohibits health plans offered on the exchange established under the federal Affordable Care Act from offering coverage for abortion.
*Prohibits cities and counties from offering coverage for abortions in health plans they offer their employees.
* Prohibits abortions for the purpose of selecting the sex of a child."

Fine with me......but only if all the old republicans have to show photo ID in person at the poll and register their ballot before mailing their absentee ballots in, there are not any safeguards to keep their spouses and relatives from filling out a ballot on their behalf and sending it in.

Hopefully the Dems can correct this loophole at their next opportunity.

Of course the party that stands to gain the most from voter fraud is going to say things like "disproportionately affects minorities."

Tell me something. If the Democrats can go into minority neighborhoods with buses and take citizens to polls in droves, why can't they do the same to get them ID's?

Show my research or any kind of article that shows how voter fraud due to the ID thing has ever impacted the outcome of any election. Its not a real problem. You can find tons of studies on real problems like drinking and driving, value of healthcare, renewable energy sources. Sure one person who worked in a polling office cheated. That doesn't make it a problem. That doesn't mean you have to screw over people because someone could potentially do something wrong.

To be honest, I actually don't give a fuck. I don't believe voting affects anything. I'd just rather the gubment spend time on real shit like trying to make RTP more appealing to companies, improving our state school system, banning gay marriage... you know shit that makes a difference.

They can but that's not really the point. Regardless it's the elderly more than the blacks who don't have ID.

And again, if they were actually interested in fraud they would have also examined absentee balloting, where the only real proven fraud exists.

Okay. Ask yourself two questions:

Who do you think is committing the fraud?

Who do you think doesn't have an ID?

Figure out a law that targets the people who are committing the fraud not the people they are exploiting.
