I've paid zero attention to this whole ordeal (I blame Jon Stewart for taking a break from the Daily Show)

So what's their deal? They doing some ethnic cleansing or collecting nukes or is their current dictator not as good as the one we want to rule them?

Give me the cliff notes of this nonsense

I guess looking for an excuse to bomb Iran? I am not jealous of the president right now. He's getting republicans and democrats to hate him.

Pro-Assad forces kill 175 rebels in ambush: Syrian state media

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/02/26/us-syria-crisis-ambush-idUSBREA1P0TP20140226

Quote :
"Forces loyal to Syria's president killed at least 175 Islamist rebel fighters, most of them foreigners, in an ambush in insurgent-held eastern outskirts of Damascus, state media said on Wednesday.

The attack was led by the Lebanese Shi'ite militant group Hezbollah, which has joined the government in a increasingly sectarian conflict that is pulling in fighters from across the region and destabilizing Syria's neighbors, said activists."

In keeping with transferring chit-chat to soap box, i figured i'd post this here and bump this thread.

OEP posted this in the Soap Box, a very informative comic on the origins of the Syrian Civil War

I dont think Russia's mitary is capable of having the impact on ISIS they think they will.

I also dont think, politically, the US can afford to be upstaged by Putin in this arena. They simply will not let that happen. They also will not allow Putin to prop up Assad when this is all said and done.

I think Russia will fail to dislodge ISIS without putting boots on the ground, and they will be unwilling to do so while fighting a shadow battle in the Ukraine. Meanwhile, after the 2016 election is over, the US might go into Syria with more support with the understanding that Assad cannot remain.

Is it generally accepted that Russia is propping up Assad, and targeting Rebels as well as ISIL?

Anyone think there is a chance that the world (including the west, middle east, Russia) will unite to take on isis?

There would have to be some plan for Syria after isis is gone to fill that vacuum. That is when the real proxy war will begin.

isis won't go away until the politics of the region are solved. you'll prolly just have to give "isis" a sunni state between iraq and syria.

The region won't be solved until there's a side that finances the fighting or provides the troops that are expended and can't or won't fight no more and do unconditional surrender.

So get back to us in 5 years.

Meanwhile, neutrals have to put up with the bullshit. Be they in Damascus or Paris.

Even if we were somehow able to kill every single member of ISIS, without exacting a huge number of civilian casualties as they use occupied populations as human shields, there would just be another group pop up in a few years doing the same thing.

If countries were to go to actual war to try an end ISIS, an agreement will have to be made about much collateral damage can and will be done.

^^ that's the big problem... DoD has released at least 1 study, possibly more, that conventional military action draws more people into the fight, not less-- it creates more terrorism because the Internet allows Isis to package the graphic images to forment anti-Western rage.

In my fantasy world, we can wash our hands of any involvement, tell the regional players (Iran, Iraq, Israel, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Europe, even Russia) it's their problem to solve... we forfeit our political and economic interests in the region and just be done with it. We've sunk up to $4 trillion dollars into this, that's $4 trillion that could have been used for addressing the housing crisis, or student loan debt crisis, healthcare reform, research, could have used towards addressing inequality, or growing child poverty, could have gone to building nuclear power plants or solar arrays, could have been used towards a Mars mission, now lost because of a completely optional, preemptive war that is the direct predecessor to the creation of Isis.

Crazy how backwards, uncivilized and uneducated societies often are in that part of the world. How can we hand-hold them into the 20th century so we can eventually lead them into the present?
