I'm trying to understand how loudRyan failed to realize a song where "
Rape Me" is screamed twenty times repeatedly is actually about rape. Has he been listening to Maynard Keenan too much?

synapse is doing his best vinylbandit impression to let us know who we should think is a good band.

Kurt Cobain, who actually created the music, hated most of his songs and thought they were too sophomoric.

Foo Fighters. I never had to deal with angst ridden teenagers when I would say how much I liked a Foo Fighters song. Any time I mentioned a Nirvana song in high school, people got all slump necked and bug-eyed and wanted to talk about Cobain in the interzone and mugwumps.

It's not even debateable, most Foo-Fighter songs are shitty pop-rock.

LOL, I know what Cobain said it meant... I was mocking those Nirvana fans who feel the need to try to always read deep shit into their songs as if Cobain was some kind of master poet.

http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Rape-Me-lyrics-Nirvana/DD7DCBBF70A75BE44825682D000D84B0

Some quotes from Nirvana fans about the meaning of that song:

"Kurt Cobain wrote this about how he felt the media was raping him by psychologically analyzing each song he wrote and finding reference from his personal life in his music. He felt raped by them."

"Stop being narrow minded! If you cannot relate to life screwing you, therefore "raping" you...then you are a very fortunate person. This song is powerful in my eyes as life circumstances, and individuals mentally (raped) screwed me over. Kurt expresses himself and how he feels, if you cannot relate to it... simply dont listen to it!"

"This song is about heroin. And the continued struggle and merry go round of addiction. And how everytime you take the drug you are being 'raped' 'wasted' etc etc Kurt Cobain tended to use a lot of double meanings in his songs."

"This song is about selling out, and that the act of selling out basically means to get MTV to rape them. In fact, Nirvana was prohibited to play Rape Me at the MTV awards because they thought the song was specifically for them."

"I have noticed a thing when a tough thing is by a simple person, the thing loses its toughness, again when a stupid thing is done by a great one the thing becomes very meaningful. the second one happened here.... Probably this is the only way to give a meaningful dimension to a meaningless thought."

Nirvana definitely >> Foo Fighters

but I think FF's first album (which I think was done almost all by Grohl himself) is the best album out of either of the two bands

I understand that that's an unshared opinion, but it was always one of my favorites

I just watched some of the documentary Sound City, which is really cool until it gets to the point where the studio shuts down and Dave Grohl buys the console. While I wouldn't say I don't like him, I find him pretty annoying (he produced and directed the movie)

Nirvana is better hands-down, even though I'm not a big Nirvana fanboy.

Grohl really annoys me. I feel like he tries too hard to be a rock star and do "rock star things". The Foo Fighters themselves are pretty mediocre in my mind. They have a couple songs I like but I don't see us looking back at them in 30 years talking about how they changed rock and roll.

Foo Fighters just kinda got stuck in that only good in the 90s loop

but yet again, that's just my personal opinion there

after that one they released in '99 (which I didn't love, but it was all right) I just kinda stopped paying attention to anything released after 2000

same with Green Day

it just didn't seem the same not being in the 90s

I think that might just be a personal psychological issue though

Chalk me up as someone that likes the Foo Fighters better than Nirvana. I like Grohl's voice better. Kinda makes it a no brainer if you're not a fan of someone's voice.

I know FF has evolved in the last twenty some odd years, it would have been interesting to see how Nirvana would have evolved had they been around as long as FF.

I also would rather listen to Dave Grohl sing than Kurt Cobain. Neither is a terribly talented songwriter IMO (all my favorite nirvana songs are covers).

Nirvana will always have a place in rock history, as the first grunge band to sell out and become pop-rock sensations.

I don't really know if this is true, but I feel like Foo fighters songs are primarily just one line, over and over and over and over.

And they're ok. But they're no nirvana
