^the police didn't tell him anything; the 911 operator did, and their words are not legal instruction. and I'll point out again, in past self defense cases, even when the 911 operator told the person to not use force/put away firearms, the people still used self defense and was justified as such.

Ok, he ignored the sound advice of the E-911 and ended up killing someone. To some, he is an hero. I question his agenda that day, in following a teenager around in his car with a gun, in the first place.

^bias is obvious. 911 operators don't know the real situation and can't reasonable give good advice in all situations. For this case, yeh, it would have been better for him to listen, we can say that looking back. And as I've said 3 times, operators don't always give good advice and it is not legal instruction. Some kids could be dead or raped today if they would have listened to the 911 operator.
And he didn't set out with a firearm to follow some kid. He was carrying, presumably like normal for him, was driving down the street, and saw a suspicious person.
And no, you aren't always justified in using lethal force when getting beat up. That's absurd.

Read the media reports. That was an actual position of their Neighborhood Watch program. The newsletters listed him as the POC for neighborhood watch etc.
