"A 22-year-old pregnant woman survived after being bound, driven to Detroit, set on fire and shot early Saturday morning.

The woman, who was 9-months pregnant, returned from a movie with the father of her unborn child, and dropped him off at his Warren house on the 8500 block of Sherman when she was approached from behind, Warren police Sgt. Dave Geffert said.

The woman’s hands, feet and eyes were bound with duct tape. She was then forced into her car and driven to an unknown place in Detroit where she was doused with lighter fluid, set on fire and shot once in the upper back, he said.

“She didn’t know where she was at the time,” he said.

The woman, whose name and city of residence are unavailable, was able to quickly put the fire out by rolling on the ground.

“Right after the assailant had shot her, he fled the scene,” Geffert said. “I’m saying ‘he’ because she reported a male voice, unknown description.”

Her attacker or attackers fled, leaving the woman’s car behind. She was able to break free from the duct tape, drove to a gas station in Detroit and called her mom who met her.

The pair started driving to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, saw Royal Oak officers, and flagged them down, Geffert said.

A condition report was not available on the woman today, and it’s unclear where she is currently being treated.

“She’s expected to make a recovery,” Geffert said. An ultrasound was performed on her unborn child and the baby appears fine, he said.

'Olympic rings' molecule olympicene in striking image

Quote :
"esearchers have succeeded in taking a stunning image of a newly synthesised molecule called olympicene.

The molecule - just over a billionth of a metre across - gets its name because its five linked rings resemble the Olympic symbol.

It was first made by collaborators at the University of Warwick in the UK.

They teamed up with IBM researchers, who in 2009 pioneered the technique of single-molecule imaging with its non-contact atomic force microscopy."

Single molecule's electric charges seen in first image

Quote :
"Researchers have shown off the first images of the "charge distribution" in a single molecule, showing an intricate dance of electrons at tiny scales.

Charges on single atoms have been measured before, but capturing the dance within a complex molecule is significantly more difficult.

The pioneering measurement could shed light on a range of "charge-transfer" processes that are common in nature."

The team's first-ever charge distribution measurements (top) matched neatly with theory

"LONDON — A British priest has apologized for some unholy language on his Facebook page, his bishop says.

Canon Paul Shackerley, Vicar of the Minster Church of St. George in Doncaster in northern England, raised eyebrows by using the f--- word and remarking that "alas, I have religion tomorrow" in some Saturday evening postings.

Peter Burrows, the bishop of Doncaster, met with Shackerley on Friday and later said the priest regretted the inappropriate language and had removed it.

"Whilst meant in a jocular sense, he recognizes that some of the language was unfitting. He has apologized unreservedly," Burrows said in a statement posted on the diocesan website. "I have received Paul's letter of apology and have been assured that this will not happen again."

Stories of priestly waywardness are a favorite subject of British newspapers, and the comments drew attention far and wide. With facial piercings and one piercing in his tongue, Shackerley cuts an unconventional figure.

Church officials were alerted to his Facebook comments by an anonymous letter.

In the first of his Saturday night musings, Shackerley said: "I think I will put my feet up. I've done f--- all today other than jazz lesson and visit a friend. I hear the fizz of tonic in my gin beckoning.

"Alas, I have religion tomorrow. At least I'm not preaching this week."

And oh dear! "Sin is such fun," he said.

It was perhaps less alarming than Shackerley's comment about a photo of himself with a snowman.

"Forgive my sin of frivolity. Sin is such fun! But I haven't been having an inappropriate relationship with Snowy, who can longer be called a 'snowman' in the name of political correctness," Shackerley wrote.

The chatty priest also ruminated last month about the dangers of sites such as Facebook.

"I have known employees (to) receive disciplinary and dismissal notices for inappropriate postings," he wrote."

Almost as ridiculous are the WRAL comments. http://www.wral.com/news/technology/story/11140697/

Epic Games prevails in lawsuit, awarded $4.5M

Quote :
"In a duel matching lawyers, not swords, of two video game development companies, Epic Games has prevailed.

A U.S. District Court jury in Raleigh awarded Epic a lopsided victory over Silicon Knights in a legal battle dating back to 2007.

The jury awarded Epic $4.5 million in damages while rejecting the Canadian company's claims involving a dispute over use of Epic's Unreal game engine in development of Silicon Knights titles.

Silicon Knights is the developer of “Too Human,” the game at the center of the dispute, and “Metal Gear Solid.”

Silicon Knights licensed Epic’s “Unreal 3” game engine to develop “Too Human." It sued Epic for fraud, breach of contract and other claims. The developer said Unreal Engine 3 did not work as Epic represented it would and that Epic has been unable or unwilling to fix it.

Epic countersued, claiming that Silicon Knights misappropriated Epic's technology.

The jury agreed, finding that Silicon Knights had breached a license agreement with Epic, misappopriated trade secrets and infringed copyrights, Epic said in a statement issued after the verdict.

Epic said it also had 30 days in which to seek reimbursement of attorneys' fees and costs related to the case.

Jurors heard testimony over nine days.

The judge in the case had already ruled that even if Silicon Knights had prevailed it would have been limited to $1 in awards on the various counts considered in the case.

"We are delighted with the jury's verdict and all of the hard work done by the Hunton & Williams legal team," said Jay Andrews, Epic's General Counsel, in a statement."

"CARY, N.C. — Superhero fans and the local media got a little taste of Hollywood in Cary Monday as Marvel Studio's blockbuster "Iron Man 3" started its first day of production at the Epic Games studios.

EUE/Screen Gems Studios in Wilmington is serving as the base for the high-profile movie starring Robert Downey Jr., but it's also being shot at locations in the Triangle, Miami and China.

Fans, along with camera-toting paparazzi photographers, lined up outside the Epic Games studios, where a convoy of RVs, trailers and tents had set up camp.

"I want to see Robert Downey Jr. walking by, cup of coffee in his hand. That's about it. That's as much as I can hope for really," superhero fan Loren Armitage, of Raleigh, said.

Star Don Cheadle, who plays James "Rhodey" Rhodes, was reportedly at the shoot in Cary Monday, but Downey, who plays crime-fighting billionaire inventor Tony Stark, and Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays Stark's long-time assistant, weren't.

Scenes were being shot inside and outside the Epic Games studios, where a large Christmas tree was set up on the front lawn.

Movie fan Megan Mercer-Bourne said she hadn't been lucky enough so far to see much activity past the perimeter of the shoot.

"Just landscaping," she laughed. "They came and delivered some mulch. They're laying out some flowers now."

Movie fans from as far as New York managed to make their way to Cary, including one man, known only as "Radio Man" because of the big radio he wears around his neck.

"I just love to be around scenes and the set. I love this kind of stuff," he said.

He came with his bike on a bus in hopes of getting in the film. The former homeless man has made more than 100 cameos in TV and films, including movies starring Johnny Depp, Dustin Hoffman and Pierce Brosnan.

"Iron Man 3" will be shot over the next 10 months and will be released in 2013. State government officials expect that its production will create about 1,550 jobs and generate more than $80 million for North Carolina.

The movie was drawn to North Carolina, in part, by a 25 percent tax credit for production companies spending a minimum of $250,000 that the state has offered since 2010."

"Someone’s mama was so fat she exploded in a crematorium

A morbidly obese woman’s corpse caused a crematorium in Austria to burst into flames, The Daily Mail reports.

Due to the woman’s substantial mass of body fat, the oven overheated, sparking a fire in the filter reaching upward of 570 degrees Fahrenheit. The fire grew and was soon out of control.
As thick black smoke poured out of the building, firemen arrived to combat the flames. They succeeded in preventing the fire from spreading.

The firemen may have bested the fire, but the episode left its mark.
A nauseating blanket of scorched grease coated the firemen’s suits and the special breathing systems each man had to wear.

The woman reportedly weighed around 440 lbs.
The fire has sparked discussion of weight limits for cremation in Austria."

http://www.cnn.com/2012/06/06/justice/massachusetts-texting-trial/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

Quote :
"Massachusetts teen convicted of homicide in texting-while-driving case

(CNN) -- A Massachusetts teen was convicted Wednesday of homicide as a result of texting while driving and will serve one year in prison.

In a landmark case for the state, Aaron Deveau, 18, was found guilty on charges of vehicular homicide, texting while driving and negligent operation of a motor vehicle in a 2011 crash that fatally injured Donald Bowley, 55, of Danville, New Hampshire, and seriously injured a passenger in Bowley's car.

"I made a mistake," Deveau said Wednesday after his mother told the district court in Haverhill, Massachusetts he would not intentionally hurt anyone. "If I could take it back, I would take it back."

Judge Stephen Abany sentenced the teen to two and a half years on the vehicular homicide charge and two years on the texting and causing injury charge. He will serve one year concurrently on both charges and the balance of both charges is suspended for five years. His license will be suspended for 15 years.

"There are no winners today," Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said in a statement. "A beloved grandfather is dead. A once active woman can no longer work and is still racked with pain from her injuries and a young man is going to jail. When we get behind the wheel of a car, we are obligated to drive with care. ... As we saw in this case, in a split second, many lives are forever changed."

In the February 20, 2011, accident, prosecutors said, Deveau's car crossed the center line on a street in Haverhill, which is in northeast Massachusetts near New Hampshire, and hit the vehicle Bowley was driving.

Bowley's girlfriend, Luz Roman, 59, was in his car with him and suffered serious injuries.

Haverhill Detective Thomas Howell testified the impact left the two "almost folded into the floorboards."

Bowley died March 10, 2011, after he was taken off life support.

"My brother received such head trauma that ... there was no hope for him," Bowley's sister, Donna Burleigh, said in court.

Roman talked about the incident's continued impact.

"Loss of sleeping, loss of my boyfriend. So many losses, I can't tell you how many," she told the judge.

Essex Assistant District Attorney Ashlee Logan argued that Deveau may have erased some of his texts or lied to police after the accident about when he was texting.

Deveau said after the crash in a taped interview with police, which was played in court, "I was tired. I was distracted. When I looked away for one quick second, I came too close to her and I was trying to hit my brakes."

His defense lawyer said authorities set out from the beginning to link texting to the crash, a cause-and-effect relationship that he contends is not valid.

Some 38 states ban text messaging for all drivers, while 31 prohibit all cell phone use by "novice drivers," according to the Governor's Highway Safety Association."

"Do powerful women need to tame their unsightly bulges?

(CNN) -- Adele, who won big at the 2012 Grammys, once told Karl Lagerfeld off when he said that she was talented and pretty but a little too fat. Maybe his words got to her.

The British pop star made news this week when she admitted to wearing four pairs of Spanx under a dress that wowed the audiences at the Grammys. Apparently, this was an improvement over her original dress that featured a built-in corset and in which she passed out when she tried it on.

Spanx is a line of undergarments that offers solutions for women of all sizes and shapes. You can target bulging stomachs, jiggling upper arms, aging breasts and any other body part that may need some enhancement. No longer an item of fantasy play or a secret amongst plus-sized women, Spanx products have become prized accessories flaunted by the Kardashians, Oprah and suburban moms.

Spanx's selling point is that it helps smart, successful women of all ages to build their confidence by, well, looking good. But playing with fire might be a more adequate metaphor when we consider that less than half a century ago, women denounced Spanx-like garments as symbols of oppressive beauty standards.

When women got rid of girdles and garter belts en masse in the 1960s, they didn't only reject restricting undergarments. (And restrict they did; it's hard to ride a bike, perform surgery or even breathe, as Adele learned, when your midsection is squeezed tight).

They also rejected a society in which women were underemployed, underpaid and underappreciated. Throwing away girdles and curlers seemed like the dawn of a new era. Women got jobs, demanded equal pay and learned to be as tough as their male peers.
Spanx founder makes billionaires list
Spanx slips owner into billionaire club

Fifty years later, the girdle-like Spanx is back thanks to Sara Blakely, a brilliant woman who built a multimillion empire. Blakely used $5,000 to start a brand that defines its category, shapewear. She owns 100% of a company that turns a handsome profit. She is the youngest female self-made billionaire in the world. She would be a darling of the women's movement if her innovation wasn't antithetical to everything else it stood for.

The twist is that Spanx prides itself on empowering women.

The tagline for its In-Power panties that promise to whittle your waist, firm your figure and amp up your look is "powerful women wear powerful panties."

The company's catalog proclaims: "Tame your tummy and create an hourglass silhouette with Super Higher Power, our new comfortable yet powerful high-waisted hosiery shaper.... Now, you've got the power!"

Translation: Powerful women tame unsightly bulges.

Say bye-bye to bad body image talk

It wasn't supposed to be this way. The protesters who descended upon Atlantic City in 1968 to picket the Miss America pageant weren't clamoring for more comfortable girdles. They wanted to change the rules of the game, telling women that their power lay in their heads, not in their bras and panties.

What the 1968 protesters fought for still matters today. Despite huge progress, our society is not a post-feminist era. Women earn less than 80 cents to a man's dollar, hold about 17% of the seats in Congress and represent 3.6% of Fortune-500 CEOs.

Of course, women aren't marched to their lingerie drawers at gunpoint. They choose to spend $250 million a year on Spanx products alone. Some would argue they make a wise choice. While beauty standards have changed, women are still rewarded for boosting their appearance. Better-looking women are more likely to be hired and promoted than those who are less attractive.

But when women think that they can have both their Spanx and their paychecks, they miss the big picture.

The culture that gave us Spanx holds us to impossible standards of beauty that even the sveltest women cannot meet (just think of all the Hollywood stars who are always trying to slim down). And it provides us with an impoverished sense of empowerment.

Sadly, even women running for the highest office are not immune. Like the beautiful actresses who go the extra mile to put on their best appearance on the red carpet, politicians are as attuned to perceptions.

Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton all upped their wardrobe ante when they stepped into the national spotlight. Ending up on People's worst-dressed list could be as embarrassing for a politician as for a starlet.

Of course, we can't blame Spanx or Blakely for any of this. All of us are to blame.

With our dollars, we support the very object that constrains us. When we wear shapewear, we buy into messages that equate women's power and abilities to the size and shape of their silhouettes. Little wonder that a woman of Adele's caliber felt the pressure, too."

Sex Toy Fools Entire Chinese Village

Quote :
"The discovery of a double-headed sex toy mistaken for a mystical rare fungus brought national notoriety to a Chinese village and TV program this week.

Villagers from Liucunbu, a rural community outside western Chinese city of Xi'an, encountered the sex toy while drilling a new well shaft. Hard-pressed to identify the flexible, fungi-like object, perplexed residents alerted the local news station, which immediately sent reporter Yunfeng Ye to the scene.

In her coverage of the finding, broadcast last Sunday on the station's investigative journalism program Xi'an Up Close, Ye thoroughly probed different aspects of the discovery, interviewing locals and inserting her own research on the alleged mushroom. Despite Ye's earnest reporting, her and the villagers' obliviousness of the object's real identity has now lent itself to national amusement.

The report opens with Ye proclaiming the discovery of the mysterious object, the likes of which "not even an 80-year-old local man has seen." Villagers crouch around the object, floating innocently in a water-filled bucket. "It has an eye and a nose, but we don't know what it is," says a man who was among the drillers who discovered the sex toy.

Describing the object's qualities in explicit detail, Ye and the villager determine that it is a type of lingzhi, a shelf fungus of the Ganoderma lucidum species, which according to legend has the ability to give immortality. Asserting that the mushroom is rarely seen because it grows underground, she says, "When the Emperor Qin Shi Huang [the First emperor of China] was on the hunt for the secret to longevity, it is said he discovered this lingzhi was the answer."

After the program aired, many viewers immediately recognized the object as a sex toy modeled after female genitalia, and online video of the report gained millions of views overnight. While the video received many comments lauding the station's and villagers' "purity," the day after the program aired the Xi'an news station posted an apology on Sina Weibo, a Chinese blogging website.

"Our program last night made everyone laugh," the apology said, expressing regret for an "uncomfortable and misleading" report. "Our reporter is very young and sheltered.""

No one was injured in Saturday's plunge during the reception at Bay Pointe Inn on Gun Lake in Shelbyville, about 25 miles south of Grand Rapids.

Video posted by WOOD-TV shows Eric and Maegan Walber of Byron Center falling along with their wedding party.

They talked about it with the station en route to their honeymoon on Mackinac Island. The groom says they were on the dock about 30 seconds when it started to lean and tilt.

The bride says the fall it was scary for a moment because her wedding dress made it difficult to get her footing, but she says she "came up laughing.""

The funniest part is the groom bolting out of there, leaving his new wife behind.

Husband 'solicited men to rape his wife through the "casual encounters" section of Craigslist'

what a sick sick husband, and what sick men to respond to that kind of ad.

Quote :
"A woman suffered repeated attempted sexual assaults, after her husband posted a Craigslist ad pretending to be her and asking to be raped.

At least two men powered their way into the woman's Twin Cities, Idaho home on separate occasions with the intention of forcing her to have sex with them.

'The person posting the ad told him she wanted to be forcibly raped as that was a fantasy of hers,' the police report states.

"TLC has started airing promos for its upcoming Toddlers & Tiaras spin-off, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. The show features T&T breakout/viral sensation Alana, whose "go go juice"-fueled antics include weird neck-rolling, teeth-sucking, affectedly muttered rambles that would read as "ghetto" and/or Southern stereotypes ("Honey boo boo, child!" is her catchphrase; "A dolla make me holla" is another) if she were old enough to know what that meant and/or if anyone actually cared. She's kind of like B.A.P.S. 2.weird.

Anyway, the commercial for her show, which begins airing Wednesday, August 8, includes armpit farts, belly flopping into mud, belly slapping, an implication of lice and a familial discussion as to whether or not Alana's kin counts as rednecks since they have all their teeth. (I don't actually believe that all of them have all of their teeth, by the way.) It is important to note that her mother is extremely into couponing. In other words, I'm already hooked."

"TOLEDO, Ohio — A 4-year-old girl who went through two years of cancer treatments isn't being allowed to go on a Make-A-Wish trip to Disney World because her father said she's in remission and the trips should go to children who are sicker than his daughter.

The young girl, McKenna May of Haskins, had the trip postponed twice while she was undergoing treatment for leukemia and finally was set to go in August when the father refused to sign off on the trip, the girl's mother and grandmother said Thursday.

The family said Make-A-Wish requires signatures from both parents if either have visitation rights or is listed on the birth certificate. McKenna's parents never married or lived together. Her grandmother said the father only recently received visitation privileges.

McKenna's mother and grandmother are now collecting donations at local businesses to pay for the trip to Disney on their own. Money has poured in since their story spread beyond northwest Ohio. They haven't told McKenna why the Make-A-Wish trip was canceled.

"We've told her we're still going to Disney, just not when she thought it was happening," said her grandmother, Lori Helppie. "We don't want her to judge her father."

Her father, William May of Toledo, said donations made to the organization should help those who are terminally ill.

"Spend the money on a child who this might be their last memory," May said Thursday. "Kids who are only going to live a year or six months."

The girl's grandmother said that McKenna has had a rough two years and won't be judged to be free of cancer until five years after her last treatment, which was last month.

McKenna was diagnosed with leukemia in April 2010, just before she turned two. Chemotherapy treatments affected her speech and immune system, and she had three extended stays in the hospital. She also broke her leg in a fall. Doctors told the family that it would be better to wait to go to Disney until McKenna was done with treatment, Helppie said.

"She's been through quite a bit," Helppie said. "We have had quite the journey getting her back to being like every other 4-year-old."

McKenna's mother, Whitney Hughes, said she's overwhelmed that so many people have reached out to help. The family expects that they'll soon have enough money to go to Disney. It's something McKenna has talked about for months, her mom said.

"She wants to go see Mickey and the princesses," Hughes said."

That Make-A-Wish story is ridiculous! They're mission used say something about "terminally ill" but they changed it years ago to "life-threatening medical conditions" so children like McKenna May can also have wishes granted.

All sorts of in this story:
Quote :
"NEW YORK — Will little Sophia and Jacob morph into baby Christian and Anastasia about nine months from now?

While it's impossible to declare a "Fifty Shades of Grey" baby boomlet, some moms and moms-to-be attribute their pregnancies to sex inspired by the erotic trilogy that went mainstream early this year.

One night on vacation in Florida was all it took for Betsy Bailey, a labor and delivery nurse, no less, in suburban Chicago. She's expecting baby number six, conceived soon after reading the steamy bondage love story.

"It was like one night alone," she laughed. "We went out to dinner and, you know, a little wine, a little stone crab and a little Christian Grey."

Brittany Woodard, 21, in Norfolk, Va., has a 6-month-old son, Greyson, whose name has absolutely nothing to do with the books Woodard read while her military husband was away for four months.

New to the spicy genre, the stay-at-home mom wasn't trying for another baby so soon, but she was ready "with many new ideas" in the boudoir department when her husband got home. She's due in February.

"We just got stationed here a couple of months ago," Woodard said, "and the week I was going to pick up my birth control we found out we were having another baby!"

Ashley Nealy, 19, in Fayetteville, N.C., bought into the Fifty Shades buzz for the love story between dominant billionaire Christian and shy, clumsy Ana Steele, whom he attempts to groom as a sexual submissive, until cupid strikes and they live happily ever after.

With a year-old son, another baby wasn't on Nealy's front burner, but reigniting what she had with her fiance before their exhausting life as new parents was.

"Having a baby takes a toll on your relationship, especially as young as we are," she said. "Things had kind of died down, so I wanted to do something to help maybe get things back to the way they used to be between us."

Before "Fifty," they were down to once a week in the bedroom. "While I was reading them it was just about every day," she said.

Son Kayden's sibling is also scheduled to arrive in February.

At BabyCenter.com, a large online community of moms and expectant moms, nearly 150 women have posted that their pregnancies are directly related to more baby-making activity inspired by the best-selling books that have sold 31 million copies in all formats.

Bailey's No. 6 is due Christmas Day, her 42nd birthday. She and her husband always knew they wanted a big family, but they thought big would be four kids.

"We picked up our fifth in Mexico. He was a vacation baby as well," she joked. "We call him the worm at the bottom of the tequila bottle."

Christian and Ana aren't on her name list, though her great-grandmother's maiden name, Gray, had been a possibility — until now. "Now I don't think I could do it," Bailey said."

http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/26/travel/friends-summer-photo-tradition/index.html

Five guys take same photo for 30 years

(CNN) -- When five teenagers sat down and posed for a picture at Copco Lake in 1982, they didn't plan on making it a tradition. But that's what it became.

Every five years for the past three decades, John Wardlaw, John Dickson, Mark Rumer, Dallas Burney and John Molony have been meeting at the California lake and taking the same photo.

The first photograph of the high school friends was just happenstance. Wardlaw, known as Wedge in the group, had a family cabin at the lake where the friends gathered in July 1982.

While hanging out on the deck of the cabin, Dickson, or J.D., set his 35-millimeter camera on self-timer to take a group photo.
5 guys vacation pic a huge hit online

"For some reason, we all chose to have dark and mysterious expressions on our faces," said Wardlaw. "I'm sure we all thought we were being really cool."

Is the photo better than the vacation?

Though they tried a couple of poses, the one that would eventually win as the official vacation photo depicts the five teens, three of them shirtless, with shaggy hair typical of the time. They were about 19 years old.

Molony, known in the group as Belves, is pictured holding a Folgers Instant Coffee jar, which contained a cockroach the guys had decided to keep as a pet. They fed their new friend with a piece of butterscotch candy and kept it company with a photograph of Robert Young.

"Priorities were so different back then. All I was really thinking about was summer and girls," said Wardlaw.

As the men went into their college years, they continued to return to the lake every summer. They spent their time fishing and reading and playing roles in homemade movies shot by Wardlaw, who is now a filmmaker.

"We're all very creative people, so we would take all of our creative energy and focus it into a certain direction," said Molony. "It wasn't, 'Let's all get together and get drunk.' It was, 'Let's get together and see who can make the funniest joke or pull off the sneakiest prank.'"

10 budget all-inclusive resorts

The men never drank on the trip. It has always been good, clean fun.

At least fairly clean: One year Wardlaw turned on the water to take a shower, and it was running brown. He removed the shower head to find a beef bullion cube.

"When I went back to the living room, the guys were all chuckling and I said something like 'beefy goodness' and they all exploded with laughter," he said.

But it wasn't until five summers later when Wardlaw, a photography enthusiast, decided it would be fun to recreate the photograph they'd taken in '82.

In 1987, the now college-educated men sat in the same position on the same bench, again with a self-timed camera. The jar, a different one this time, contained no cockroach, and the hat held by Wardlaw was different as well. The expressions however, were unchanged.

"I think I had a feeling this might become some cool tradition, but I had no idea we would still be doing it for 30 years," said Wardlaw.

In 1997, 15 years after the original photo, the men, then in their mid-30s, decided to solidify the photo as a tradition they would continue every five years for the rest of their lives.

Five guys, fun facts, through the decades

As the ritual became more concrete and when digital cameras were introduced, the group became more picky over the details of the photo, going as far as to wear the same clothes, and designate an official jar and hat as props. Hairstyles have changed over the years and with the march of time they abandoned the bare-chested motif.

"Watch us lose hair and gain forehead, gain and lose and gain and lose weight," Dickson posted on a website he maintains devoted to the tradition. "There are reasons we all decided it was better to take the photo with our shirts on."

Now, the friends also take the time to film the ordeal, and interview each other concerning the last five years' events.

The guys all agree that this trip has been the glue that has allowed them to maintain their friendships.

"It's kind of an organic relationship that's evolved not just from being high school buddies but from having common passions for life," Molony said.

Over the years, the friends have played parts in the milestones of each others' lives, including being in each others' weddings.

"I look at the photos and think of the relationships I went through," said Dickson. "Wedding rings come and go, if you look closely."

Dickson, who now works as a restaurant columnist, got married in mid-July and had some of the guys in his wedding. In June, all five friends celebrated Dickson's bachelor party at the 30-year anniversary of their Copco Lake tradition.

Molony, who has since relocated to New Orleans and works for UPS, is married, as is Wardlaw, who made a career of his love for photography and film. Burney is a fourth-grade teacher. Rumer, known as "Kram," now resides in Oregon and has retired after owning his own electronics company. None of the men have children yet.

"We plan on doing this for the rest of our lives, no matter what," said Dickson. "Up until there's one guy just sitting in the same pose! Even then, maybe someone will take a picture of an empty bench for us."

The seven pictures to date are framed and hang on the wall of the cabin. The men still listen to the same '80s music they were listening to when they were 19 years old.

"I'm not in the same place I thought I'd be, but I'm in the right place," said Dickson. "Without this photo, there's no way we'd be together."

"How Did 21-Year-Old Chavis Carter Get Shot In The Head While Handcuffed In A Police Car?

Police in Jonesboro, Arkansas have launched an investigation into how 21-year-old Chavis Carter was shot in the back of a patrol car Saturday night.

Carter, who died at the hospital, was in the passenger seat of a pickup truck that was pulled over by police just before 10 pm, reports WREG. According to Officer Keith Baggett who was on the scene, Officer Ron Marsh found “some marijuana” and several new plastic baggies when he searched Carter. When they ran his information through dispatch, they found that he was wanted on a warrant in Mississippi, where he lived. The cops then handcuffed him, searched him again, and put him in the back of the patrol car. While Baggett searched the vehicle, he claims he heard “a loud thump with a metallic sound” on his trunk and saw Marsh motion to him.

The thumping noise, according to the cops, was Carter shooting himself in the head.

The police report attributed the death to a self-inflicted gunshot, though when the two officers opened the squad car door, they found Carter’s hands were still cuffed behind his back. The gun, they said, was somehow missed in both searches."

Ah yes, I'm sure he shot himself!

"Dial 911 by mistake? Stay on the line, officials say

Raleigh, N.C. — Four months after its introduction, 10-digit dialing continues to cause significant problems for the Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center.

Instead of dialing the 919 area code, callers are mistakenly dialing 911 and hanging up, Raleigh officials said. That prompts a return call from dispatchers, who must verify whether there is an emergency.

If the caller doesn't answer, law enforcement officers are sent to the address listed with the number.

In July, officers were dispatched to check on the welfare of 5,655 hang-up callers in July – a rate of 7.6 per hour. It's the highest number since problems began with the March 31 conversion to 10-digit dialing, said Emergency Communications Director Barry Furey.

Nearly 3,200 of those dispatches were in the city of Raleigh. While some were cleared before the officer arrived, Raleigh police still spent more than 300 hours last month responding to hang-up calls, Furey said.

Furey stressed that response times to real emergencies are affected when call-takers and dispatchers are occupied with mistake calls.

Anyone who dials 911 by mistake is urged to stay on the line to verify the error.

"If you dial 911 incorrectly, it is imperative that you stay on the line," Furey said. "The only apparent cure is careful dialing. We can't fix this issue without the public's help."

Prior to the area code requirement, the Raleigh-Wake 911 center dispatched officers to about 900 hang-up calls per month. From March to April, that number increased by nearly four times.

In Cary, the number of 911 hang-up calls tripled – from an average of 350 hang-up calls each month from January through March to nearly 1,050 calls in April, town officials said."

seriously, I've been dialing 919 before all of my phone calls for years and years, that's how we dialed numbers growing up (area code first), and it's not that hard to know when to press the 9, when to press the 1, and then when to press the 9 again.... it's not that hard people!

"'She is my heart and I am her legs': Devoted dad runs triathlon carrying his teenager daughter with cerebral palsy because she loves being outdoors

A devoted father has completed a triathlon carrying his 13-year-old cerebral palsy-afflicted daughter across land and through water so that she could complete the gruelling event.

Rick van Beek's feat of endurance and show of love for his daughter Madison have led many to call the man from Byron Center, Michigan the 'father of the century'.

But it is not the first race of its kind for van Beek, who said he has participated in more than 70 events, including half-marathons, triathlons and other outdoor races, as part of 'Team Maddy'.

Devotion: Rick van Beek, 39, carries his daughter Maddy, who suffers from cerebral palsy, during a sprint triathlon on Sunday. They have ran more than 70 races as Maddy loves being outdoors

He and Maddy took part in the Sanford and Sun sprint triathlon on Sunday.

Together they completed the 0.3-mile swim, 12.4-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run, with Maddy pictured in her father's arms as they transitioned from section to section.

For the swimming portion, van Beek tugs his daughter through the water in a kayak and then pulls her behind him in a cart as he cycles. He runs the last leg pushing her in a buggy.

Van Beek, 39, told the Midland Daily News that he wants to complete the events with his daughter, who is unable to walk or talk, because she adores being outside.

WHAT IS CEREBRAL PALSY?

Cerebral palsy is an umbrella term for a group of disorders that can involve brain and nervous system functions, such as movement, learning, hearing, seeing and thinking.

It is caused by injuries or abnormalities of the brain. Most problems occur when the baby is in the womb, but they can happen any point within the first two years of the child's life.

It can be recognised as early as three months old. Parents may notice their child is behind in reaching developmental stages such as sitting, rolling or crawling.

Symptoms include tight muscles and joints and muscle weakness, and may affect one side of the body or both sides.

There is no cure apart but social workers and nurses can work with the family to make the child as independent as possible.

'She functions like a three-month-old, and one of the very few things that we know she enjoys is being outside, being in the water, feeling the breeze in her hair and in her face,' he said.

Maddy was diagnosed with cerebral palsy two months after she was born.

'It was one of the worst days of our lives,' van Beek told Fox 17. 'Everybody prays that their children are healthy and for eight years I still wished that she had been a healthy child, but if she wouldn't have been like she is then we wouldn't be the people that we are today.'

His outlook changed when he saw his daughter taking part in a marathon more than four years ago, and saw the pure joy on her face.

'I watched my daughter Maddy being pushed in the Grand Rapids Marathon,' he recounted on his blog.

'To see her being so happy and enjoying every bump in the road was more than I could handle, my emotions took over.

Pushing forward: Van Beek nears the water to take part in the swimming section of a triathlon with Maddy

Endurance: Van Beek pulls his daughter through the water on the custom-made kayak
Joy: Van Beek took up racing after seeing Maddy in a marathon and noting how happy she looked

'Shortly after that day I gave up smoking 2 packs a day and chewing a tin a day to be better, for Maddy. It has been a long road, with many bumps, but we are better.'

In a bid to make his daughter happy, he began training for outdoor races in 2008. Van Beek, who was out of shape and a heavy smoker, also realised it would be beneficial for him.

He persevered to get into shape for his daughter, and raised money for charities along the way.

'[The emotion] drives me or inspires me to do the things that I do,' he wrote on his blog last year. 'Call it inspiration, call it motivation, call it what ever you want, I call it LOVE.

'That will never fade...She is my heart and I am her legs, though someday she might not physically be able to be there with me, she will always be in my heart, quietly cheering me on.'
A father's love: He said the racing also helped him get in shape and maintain a healthy lifestyle for Maddy

Happy family: Van Beek with his wife Mary and their daughter Maddy. The couple also has two other children

Many spectators have pointed out that they are touched by van Beek's devotion.

'That was just so inspirational to see,' race coordinator Misty Angle told Allegan County News after watching him at the 2011 Tri Allegan triathlon.

'That was definitely one of the highlights of the event for me and a lot of people.'

But van Beek has refused to take the credit, saying it is his daughter who inspires people.

'I think Madison has changed more peoples' lives than I even know about - without doing anything, just being out there. Not me, her,' van Beek told Fox News. 'We make a good team.'

"In the spring of 1977, Rick told his father that he wanted to participate in a 5-mile benefit run for a Lacrosse player who had been paralyzed in an accident. Far from being a long-distance runner, Dick agreed to push Rick in his wheelchair and they finished all 5 miles, coming in next to last. That night, Rick told his father, "Dad, when I'm running, it feels like I'm not handicapped."

This realization was just the beginning of what would become over 1,000 races completed, including marathons, duathlons and triathlons (6 of them being Ironman competitions). Also adding to their list of achievements, Dick and Rick biked and ran across the U.S. in 1992, completing a full 3,735 miles in 45 days."
