Sorry for not clarifying, not looking for a long term storage. Just so they stay fresh longer than 2-3 days (we get deliveries weekly). Honestly these things deteriorate right before our eyes. As much as I enjoy pickled food, the process takes way too long to do it in small batches.
8/29/2012 3:29:02 PM
Try having a cooking day when you first get your deliveries so you cook anything that's going to go bad before you think you'll realistically be able to cook it during the week. Lots of veggies that go bad quickly when fresh will hold up a lot better cooked. And for stuff you eat raw, eat that earlier in the week and save the cooked veggies for later.
8/29/2012 3:34:03 PM
there are zipper bags specifically for producethey should probably buy you a couple more days of storageand they can easily be washed and reused
8/29/2012 4:11:50 PM
plan meals, freeze stuff before it goes bad, don't eat out when there's food gonna go bad in the fridge.

Found this solid wood mantel beside the dumpster on Saturday. Not sure what type of wood it is made out of or why somebody would throw it away? Pretty happy with this score, significant other has always said she wanted to buy one of these, paint it and convert it into a headboard.Example:[Edited on January 31, 2013 at 12:22 AM. Reason : ]

Do you have a twin bed? How do you expect that to work as a headboard without massively changing it. And if you have the ability to change it, why not just build a new one from scratch instead of starting with a rotted dumpster mantel? Crazy hoarders.
1/31/2013 10:51:54 AM
I was wondering the dimensions myself when looking at that vs what mattress size they have. I don't think that has anything to do with hoarding though.[Edited on January 31, 2013 at 11:00 AM. Reason : ]

I can't decide if the example pic is cool as hell or tacky as fuck.

it's not my style at all, but I think for a house with more traditional style/decor (think Pottery Barn) they look fine.[Edited on January 31, 2013 at 4:58 PM. Reason : ]

Crazy hoarders.
1/31/2013 5:02:03 PM
ha, I just looked out of curiosity and Pottery Barn actually sells a headboard with that same kind of mantle look. Not surprised:
1/31/2013 5:03:35 PM
^ She was interested in something like that. I'll either use it or sell it, no hoarding here. Antique mantels are fairly valuable.-> http://www.unitedhousewrecking.com/thumbnails.cfm?itemvar=mantels&agevar=antique

Most recent find, around 60 postcards from the early 1900s. Also found a 10kt gold ring and sterling silver buckle in the same box. Pretty neat find.[Edited on August 5, 2013 at 11:23 AM. Reason : ]

If you found that Keurig in a dumpster, I'm going to take up this hobby.
8/5/2013 11:15:26 AM
Keurig was a Craigslist find about 2 years ago now, $50.
8/5/2013 11:23:11 AM
I can imagine you could get some really good finds in dumpsters behind retail stores. I was a manager of a retail store and one of our display TVs went out (60" HD LCD). They sent me a replacement and told me to throw the old one in the dumpster. I brought it home and paid $90 to get it fixed.
8/5/2013 11:30:18 AM
^ true, likely more risk though with cops trolling shopping centers and what not after hours
8/5/2013 12:24:22 PM
It's illegal to dig in trash? That seems stupid
8/5/2013 12:26:11 PM
retail spots usually have compactors
8/5/2013 3:58:25 PM
none that I have seen other than Big Box stores.
8/5/2013 4:09:45 PM
I manage a recycling plant and you would not believe the stuff that gets compacted at stores like Kohls and Steinmart. We get watches, clothing, dishes, silverware, small appliances, etc. Granted some of the stuff is probably broken when it goes in there, but still it's a waste. Plus we are supposed to only get cardboard from these stores so it's a pain in the ass for us to clean this mess out.
8/5/2013 4:22:25 PM
There's really no law against dumpster diving; however there are laws against trespassing. Also, just about any cop who sees you going behind a store at night is going to investigate further. It would be a bad idea to do it if you don't want to speak to the police for any reason.Sometimes a person just needs to look for a box because they need to ship something they sold on eBay though.
8/5/2013 9:30:09 PM
Pretty soon if not now, the drug stores are gonna start throwing out all their Easter candy. Try Rite Aid and CVS.

Exactly the reason he started dumpster diving!
5/5/2014 9:22:43 PM
I watch Extreme Cheapskates and a couple people dumpster dive on thereOne girl dumpster dives in NYC. She goes to gourmet grocery stores and looks for the ready-made food that gets tossed
5/5/2014 9:26:09 PM
My old job was next to an Office Max, and I would check their dumpster every day on the way to the mailbox. This was my finest dive. The only thing wrong with it was a small chunk out of one of the back corners. It was still in the box!
5/6/2014 10:45:30 AM
^ why would they throw it away? there are dozens of things they could have done (discount it, donate it to charity, give it to an employee, and loads of other options)that is nothing less than criminal in my mind. this callousness with regards to waste of resources, materials, products, and food, and the uninhibited economic/material development that every country is striving for, is going to destroy this world within the next 100 years.
5/6/2014 10:55:45 AM
^exactly. And there were ALWAYS packs of nice pens in there (with maybe 1 or 2 missing) that they could have used for the business. I also got a 5 drawer file cabinet with a small dent in the side that I sold on craigslist for $40.

5/6/2014 12:05:45 PM
^a lot of those shows are 100% fake. A friend of mine from high school has done the whole reality show circuit (pawn stars, hardcore pawn, extreme cheapskates, etc) and he was put up to all of it. his episode had him showering with his clothes, drinking only out of yogurt cups, etc. none of it is "real"

I got 40 lbs of strawberries out of an ALDI dumpster bout three weeks ago. Currently have 20 gallons of strawberry wine working. Pretty pleased about that.

10/14/2014 9:34:56 AM
I don't know if the worst part is getting produce out of a dumpster...or that fact that he's making strawberry wine. Good lord...
