^ that could happen. And Barron is the leader of the number one defense in the country, and I dont mean simply the best player, he probably isnt, but he is the leader. Claiborne also returns kicks.

I really hope Amerson wins. Odds are he'll never even come close to repeating a season like this.

Thorpe award if he catches one or two more tomorrow.I mean, can you deny the guy who AVERAGES an interception per game?
11/25/2011 10:37:32 PM
i was hoping he would get some respect in the college championship football preview on fox right thenbut no love. he should have gotten some on leading the nation on intsWilson was just on and did a great job as usual. hope he wins next weekend.

Amerson got no chances yesterday. Maryland clearly stayed away from him. I think maybe 3/4 balls tops thrown to his guy.
11/27/2011 6:14:08 PM
edsall must've seen this thread.
11/27/2011 6:31:26 PM
Amerson did get burnt a time or 2 yesterday.
11/27/2011 6:46:28 PM
He got burned big time for a TD on a double move. They don't have to throw to him a lot to abuse him -- just took advantage of his aggression.

here's hoping he breaks the ACC record in the bowl game
11/28/2011 4:31:53 PM
He's not a great cornerback. He's a great ballhawk who takes too many chances and got very fortunate this season. Interceptions are among the deceiving stats in sports. The greats generally have few, because no one dares test them. Amerson will get more respect next year, and his picks will drop accordingly, but he'll most likely be a better player. Its just that few will notice without the gaudy INT total.
11/28/2011 4:36:33 PM
that all sounds nice but if he was so avg as a CB and just a ballhawk wouldn't his INT's dropped around #6 or #7. It's not like he got 8 in one game. Also, CB's don't stop every single pass that's thrown their way, they get burned occasionally, it happens.
11/28/2011 4:39:15 PM
Amerson made a few great plays in the first quarter, but yes, he did get burned on that long touchdown. It happens. It's the first score that I can really say was his fault for making a bad play. I'll take 11 interceptions for one touchdown any day.Even Revis gets burned occasionally, and a lot of people consider him to be the best out there.
11/28/2011 4:55:02 PM
^^^That's fucking stupid. No one has had as many interceptions as him since beyond 2004. Someone doesn't jet ahead of the competition like that by being some undisciplined rogue. Interceptions give your offense the ball. He has stopped 11 opponent drives dead in their tracks. Our defense leads the nation in interceptions. Turnover differential is incredibly important. People will probably stop throwing to him next year, sure, but he had to have a year like this for that to happen...I'm not sure what you want him to do, bat all of his interceptions down? only 1 of his picks should have been batted down, and even that is because the officials incorrectly did not give him the touchback on 4th down.also Revis was eaten alive by stevie johnson yesterday, all day.[Edited on November 28, 2011 at 5:02 PM. Obviously some folks will never think rationally. Go about your jaded existence and leave the objectionable analysis to those with the mindset to grasp it.But answer me this: Next season when he has "only" 3 or 4 picks, will it be because he's gotten that much worse, or because he's not getting as many chances?[Edited on November 28, 2011 at 5:06 PM. Reason : Classic State fans, putting David Amerson and Darrelle Revis in the same sentence]
11/28/2011 5:03:08 PM
So because teams didn't know how good he was and threw the ball his way this year, he's not that great? Should he have not taken advantage of teams throwing it his way? Should he have told teams, "Hey y'all, I'm a ballin' corner, I'm gonna pick you off so you best avoid me"?http://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/def_int_career.htmNo greats on this list, nope. Greats don't get picks.[Edited on November 28, 2011 at 5:08 PM. Reason : .]
11/28/2011 5:06:11 PM
He had a great season. It was a fluke. No one routinely intercepts a pass per game at any level. Appreciate it for what it is, but don't think this makes him a great player. Anthony Henry had 10 interceptions as a rookie. Who the fuck is Anthony Henry? Exactly.[Edited on November 28, 2011 at 5:08 PM. Reason : ^ nice job comparing career leaders with single season leaders. They're basically interchangable.]
11/28/2011 5:07:59 PM
What's the argument here? He's not good, or not great?
11/28/2011 5:12:42 PM
Good not great (yet). I need two seasons to be sure. Bweez needs kneepads and a lozenge right now.
11/28/2011 5:13:51 PM
You said the greats generally have few interceptions. Career, single season, whatever. People on that list also had big single seasons. Congrats.I know it sounds all cool and knowledgeable but it's a pretty arbitrary statement. An 11 interception year is a fluke in the sense that he won't do it again next year but it doesn't mean he's not talented or great, that remains to be seen. EDIT: I'm just saying, getting a fuckload of interceptions is not necessarily a direct indicator of not being a great player as you have implied.[Edited on November 28, 2011 at 5:20 PM. Reason : .]
11/28/2011 5:15:35 PM
The greats have more career interceptions because they play longer, because they're good. Of course you have great individual interception season, but over a 10 year career, they generally average out to no more than 5-6 a season, simply because offensives will begin to recognize their talent and throw away from them.In terms of a collegiate career, since they're only 3-4 years, the averages don't always have times to play themselves out. Was Dre Bly a great player? No. He simply had a lot of interceptions in a short amount of time, a trend that would no doubt level out over a bigger sample size. My point is that if you're arguing Amerson for all these awards, do so with more ammo than simply his interception total, because that in and of itself doesn't define the position.
11/28/2011 5:23:08 PM
well, the folks who vote the acc all-conference teams seem to unanimously think he's the best corner
11/28/2011 5:27:25 PM

i agree with slave famous. he got really lucky. he'll also luck out and get a drafted in the nfl. then get some more luck and get a nice contract with a team. all luck of course.
11/28/2011 9:43:34 PM
^^^Wait wait wait, are you earnestly arguing against Amerson for Heisman?I wasn't aware this was a serious thread. Is Glennon Heisman Watch a serious thread too?
11/28/2011 9:50:07 PM
he does get burned sometimes and prob takes too many chances but he still ranks in the top 10 in passes defended. so whether they are catches or not, he is still keeping the receiver from catching the ball.he'll struggle to have half as many INT's next year b/c, like you say, they are partly luck based. what will be more telling is his total passes defended.plus almost all of his picks come when he is tight to the receiver, not on really badly thrown balls, and he is great at winning jump balls as noted by his 3-4 endzone int's.

It's not like she JUST forgot about Amerson. She forgot Dwayne Allen too. That's more than just bad journalism, she ignored 2/3ds of the ACC players who are finalists for awards at her company's show. That's willful ignorance. And even when talking about the ONE player she remembered she managed to get a back-handed insult towards his school's history with kickers. It's like she hates the ACC.[Edited on December 8, 2011 at 3:20 PM.
