shit I'm going to have to just make a trip downtown for this
8/18/2011 7:46:02 AM
going to try and hit this up Friday for a late lunch
8/18/2011 9:24:48 AM
Its really good. Sat at the end of the long table in the middle. Had a quart of the black tea (they will bring you simple syrup on the side if you want it sweet) Both got the 1/4 white meat, and split the wedge salad and some mac and cheese. Also split the chocolate chess pie with caramelized banana. Well worth $34. Will be back, again and again!
8/18/2011 2:31:44 PM
just ate there, was fucking amazingseriously great chickenalso had the chess pie, and it is fantastic if chess pie is your jam[Edited on August 18, 2011 at 2:33 PM. Reason : .]
8/18/2011 2:33:41 PM
i'm guessing the mac and cheese is like the mac and cheese at poole's which means it will sit in your belly all night loooong
8/18/2011 2:36:48 PM
this thread is the best advertisement this place could hope for....reading it has convinced me that i will be visiting
8/18/2011 2:37:02 PM
^^ Yeah, but its pimento mac & cheese.
8/18/2011 2:44:14 PM
and it is fucking incredibleRonny stated that he would like an entire tray for his birthday.
8/18/2011 2:44:56 PM
Counter Culture coffee is good now, I'll tell YOU what. I prevent from brewing my own in the morning to go fill up with it at the local bakery.
8/18/2011 2:45:36 PM
8/18/2011 2:48:03 PM
8/18/2011 2:51:16 PM
The menu says that it's a mac and cheese custard.
8/18/2011 2:51:27 PM
^thats probably pretty accurate.^^I asked that question on the last page, I didn't see "sweet tea" on the menu. I think I even asked for the sweet tea, or I asked if it came sweet, and she said it came with simple syrup if you wanted it. As far as refills go, the quart was huge, and $2 total. Would have filled the glass 5 times. They bring you a glass of ice and you have your own refill pitcher at the table. [Edited on August 18, 2011 at 3:11 PM. Reason : .]
8/18/2011 3:10:17 PM
Yeah, I'd think the menu would be fairly accurate as it lists what the menu items are (often with a brief description).
8/18/2011 3:12:52 PM
I meant accurate as to what I would call it, fuckface. Its definitely not 100% a custard, hell you could use souffle, casserole, bake, and about 1000 other things
8/18/2011 3:22:05 PM
loli kid
8/18/2011 3:22:41 PM
Hell yeah a place where I won't accidentally be served sweet tea! Unsweet tea is one Yankee habit I'll never break lol.
8/18/2011 3:31:23 PM
Let's all just settledown ok?
8/18/2011 3:33:53 PM
There are no free refills on tea, but the $2 quart filled our two glasses three times each. Also, it's 1/2/4 bucks for a pint/quart/half gallon, so there's no need to order something big up front just to save cash. Get a pint, and get another if you run out.I got a quarter white and my girlfriend got a quarter dark. As expected, the dark was better (Poole's only ever has dark when frying), but it was all excellent.
8/18/2011 7:01:53 PM
so the consensus is that this place has amazing fried chickenbut at $15/person for a piece of fried chicken and sides, are you all going to be going back often or only special occasions?cuz last time i checked, real estate is tanking, stock market is tanking, unemployment is all time high, and everyone here acting like $15 is nothing......maybe I need to work where you work
8/19/2011 1:14:09 AM
^ just ask them about Food Trucks - they don't mind spending $15 for lunch from one of those, either
8/19/2011 1:22:29 AM
poor people posting ITT again
8/19/2011 6:06:25 AM
i think it will do well. esp at lunch. people downtown don't mind dropping $10 - $15 on lunch (business people). i don't really think the prices are more outrageous than any other downtown establishment. maybe i'm wrong. but there seem to be a lot of places in the $10 - $15 range.
8/19/2011 7:22:04 AM
There's a certain section of people downtown that can afford that but when I was working downtown some of my coworkers didn't even want to pay for anything more expensive than Jimmy John. Even business folks are struggling to pay their home loans. I think she's targeting the dinner crowd and am kind of surprised she's opened for lunch.
8/19/2011 8:05:38 AM
your experience (being poor and working with poor people) is not typical of folks with real jobs that work downtown.these are people with jobs. real jobs. despite what you've heard on the news, times are not tough for these people. their salaries have stayed the same or increased and they didn't get suckered into adjustable rate mortgages. if you disagree with the prices established by the proprietor of a business, vote with your wallet.
8/19/2011 8:29:21 AM
^ Your trolling is too obvious, son. I don't think working for a software company is necessarily considered a poor people job
8/19/2011 8:36:23 AM
I'm not trollingI have worked with plenty of poor people at software companies
8/19/2011 8:39:28 AM
Yes yes yes, keep typing furiously at those keys. You're making such a beautiful and concise point in this here thread. [Edited on August 19, 2011 at 8:50 AM. Reason : too early in the morning lol]
8/19/2011 8:48:27 AM
PUNCH THOSE KEYS
8/19/2011 8:52:41 AM
Punch punch punch those keys til the day you die!
8/19/2011 8:53:43 AM
The white meat was dry and pretty cakey (over breaded and not cooked). The dark meat was epically delicious. She runs the downtown food scene now, I'm kind of curious what she was alluding to in the indyweek article about what other chefs have said about her. To me the food is over priced in all of her restaurants. I have never eaten anything at Pooles or now Beasley's that I feel I couldn't do myself. For the same price at say, Magnolia Grill in Durham, I generally have no fucking idea how they came up with the dishes they make. The dinner price is generally comparable at both. I think a lot of her success comes from what she does in the community. She's good for Raleigh for sure.
8/19/2011 8:59:05 AM
I've always wanted to try Magnolia Grill but never think to go there when I'm actually hungry
8/19/2011 9:12:12 AM
^^Yeah, I thought we were talking about fried chicken here. Not exactly something easy to fuck up.
8/19/2011 10:09:18 AM
8/19/2011 10:19:27 AM
I lost a little respect for her (Christensen) anyway, after I saw she follows Dos Perros on Twitter. That place is overwhelmingly horrible. You will leave there will an unsatisfied palette, stomach and wallet. So bad...
8/19/2011 10:22:30 AM
I've definitely called customer service at Bojangles over fucked up fried chicken in the past.
8/19/2011 10:23:01 AM
I work in downtown and most of my co-workers hit places like El Rodeo, Spize, Jimmy Johns, Shish Kabob, Mecca, Raleigh Times, Busy Bee, etc. There are plenty of lunch places under $10 in downtown raleigh. If it's a business appointment, then yes, maybe more than $10 for lunch. But I don't see myself dropping $15 for fried chicken. For that price, I'd rather hit Sitti.I've worked with Ashley before, and she comes across as being pretty overrated. I was excited about Beasley's opening, but was not happy to find out she went for the overrated, overpriced route.I hope her Chucks and the upcoming Bastillas is more reasonably priced. We need good and reasonably priced food fare in downtown Raleigh. And my co-workers are 6 figure salary employees, but I think folks have become smarter about how they spend/save money.[Edited on August 19, 2011 at 11:40 AM. 8/19/2011 11:39:53 AM
chicken + 1 side = $11or just get a chicken biscuit for $6.75you people
8/19/2011 11:47:13 AM
I don't get why the debate of the price of chicken is still going on
8/19/2011 11:48:29 AM
for seeryus
8/19/2011 11:55:12 AM
Don't eat out if you want to save money... PB&J. Beasley's is amazing!
8/19/2011 12:01:30 PM
Well for you cheap fucks, don't worry, Taz is going to open a Bojangles or Church's downtown.
8/19/2011 12:02:14 PM
god this thread sucks
8/19/2011 12:23:51 PM
^ hype up fried chicken and overcharge for it....it's not that hard to comprehendand there's a difference between cheap and smart consumers.[Edited on August 19, 2011 at 12:26 PM. Reason : k]
8/19/2011 12:26:00 PM
im laughing so hard at the 6 figure commentdo you realize that if you make 6 figures then that 15 bucks pretty much equals around 17 minutes of their pay check. thats making say 50 bucks an hour.
8/19/2011 12:28:51 PM
can you buy good ingredients that are grown locally, make something, and sell it for a cheap price and actually make a profit?[Edited on August 19, 2011 at 12:33 PM. Reason : granted I don't think this is expensive]
8/19/2011 12:29:35 PM
8/19/2011 12:30:33 PM
