I mean, 5th all-time is extremely ridiculous, but ESPN is providing the coverage so of course they are jumping on the bandwagon.

maybe top 5 dramatic moments this week. maybe
7/11/2011 7:54:12 AM
Re: the list. It was probably a Top 10 in terms of drama. You never see a goal that late in the match down a player after being f'd by refs. It's not as important/memorable as others because it's women's soccer. The closest comparison to men's I can think of in terms of unexpected drama is the Bayern-ManU final in 99 (?).

they keep saying that the yellow card on the Brazil PK couldve been because of encroachment into the box, but would Solo get a yellow card for another players encroachment? Seems to me the yellow card to Solo makes it pretty clear that the referee thought Solo moved off of the line (which she didnt do).[Edited on July 11, 2011 at 10:14 AM. Reason : adsf]
7/11/2011 10:14:12 AM
The yellow had to be her complaining, no other explanation.
7/11/2011 10:51:03 AM
I'm surprised that there hasn't been more bitching about #13 for Brazil faking the injury near the end and then running back on the field. I know she got a yellow, but I thought there would be a little more outrage. IMO, players should automatic reds when that happens.Karma on USA getting the equalizer in extra time that the player's "injury" added on to.
7/11/2011 10:55:07 AM
Also, the Brazilian keeper illegally moved an entire step off her line before contact at least once (very obviously) and possibly another time or two during the PK shootout. If we hadn't scored I would have been pissed if they didn't call it because the linesmen never signaled anything.

^^Yeah I didn't take the time to check the replays too much so you are probably right. I distinctly remember 1 or 2 and there were probably others within our 5 attempts. It wasn't even a small step either.^unless they have changed the rules (which they might have, I dropped my license a few years back now), you are still supposed to signal for a keeper coming off her line I believe. A linesman signals any foul or infringement they see and the center ref agrees, disagrees, or waives it off. And coming off your line by itself is not a cautionable offense, but like many other rules, repeated infringement of encroachment during a PK is cautionable. At that level and the consistency of coming off her line even with us scoring, you at least verbally warn if not card after 2 or 3 times within 5 shots. It's like how you can still card for a foul you waived off because of advantage even after the play is dead (even if the attacking teams scores on that play).[Edited on July 11, 2011 at 11:11 AM. Reason : .]
7/11/2011 11:04:49 AM
As I understand it (and I could be wrong, as I don't have a lot of experience with penalty shootouts):If the penalty happened during a game, the linesman's signal wouldn't be to signal for a foul or encroachment, it's to signal the goal is scored by running back to their spot for a kick-off. If a linesman stands still in his position, it's because there was a problem with the penalty.I don't know how that differs in a shootout and I'm not even sure how what I just said is relevant to the topic - I just know a linesman's responsibility during a penalty is kind of quirky.Solo got the card after one offense of encroachment. So it's obviously not for PI.
7/11/2011 11:11:27 AM
Oh I definitely agree that the card couldn't have been for that. Had to be dissent or something with the celebration. Who knows.
7/11/2011 11:12:37 AM
http://www.askasoccerreferee.com/?p=2392Here's what I just found on the signaling. Seems like even if the AR was signaling, we wouldn't really be able to tell because they'd just be standing still.
7/11/2011 11:13:34 AM
Yes, that is correct for a PK during regulation time. I was thinking that it was different for a PK shootout; however, it has been probably 6 years since I have actually reffed and even longer since I was involved in a PK shootout so I don't remember exactly.[Edited on July 11, 2011 at 11:16 AM. Reason : .]
7/11/2011 11:15:44 AM
Yeah, same here. I haven't reffed in like 3 years and I've probably only done like 2 or 3 shootouts in my life. The Advice to Referees really isn't clear on the shootout either so I'm not even sure there is official guidance. If I had to guess, I'd say it's up to the center to tell his AR what he prefers.
7/11/2011 11:20:15 AM
True.I guess the thing that bothered me with their keeper is that she seemed to "lunge" forward before a kick as opposed to a small step forward that is at the same time or just slightly before the kick like many keepers do. These small steps are generally overlooked due to timing but the lunge was annoying me even as we scored Also, why does we (the US) always seem to have such top-notch goalkeepers (both men and women)? I'm not complaining but it is just interesting. It's been that way almost the entire time I have followed our national teams since I was a kid.[Edited on July 11, 2011 at 11:26 AM. Reason : .]

I've slowly been developing a huge crush on Hope Solo. She's definitely a beast, but doesn't seem to talk or act like a man. She would also most likely throw me around in the sack...but I would definitely like the opportunity for that to happen.

I perfectly understand if you're normally a fan of soccer OR women's sportsBut if you usually like neither, why the fuck do you care?
7/11/2011 3:15:35 PM
Same reason people care about Olympics? Slow time of the year for sports?
7/11/2011 3:17:13 PM
i only watched it becuase i saw someone type "USA, USA" on facebook, so i thought that maybe a men's game was on (I'd completely forgotten about the women's World Cup). I found it when the brazilian player faked the injury in the box. So I only watched the last few minutes of OT and the shoot out. I'm not embarassed about that. If i happen to be sitting around the night of the semis, i may turn on the last few minutes to see what's happening. When is it?[Edited on July 11, 2011 at 3:18 PM. I normally don't care for soccer, but I have a special interest in the USA women's soccer team in World Cup action because of their defeat of China to win the World Cup in (whenever that was). Plus I like being supportive of our national teams. That said, I still didn't watch.

You're cool. I'm more talking about the superfags like dweedle and jbrick who only take interest when everyone else does. Its like all the Red Sox bandwagon fans, but ever worse, since these people probably won't watch soccer after this for another three years.
