I have the bad habit of intermixing my notes with tangential topics provided by stupid vocal students who pipe up and say stupid shit in the middle of a lecture. I realize I begin annotating what they're discussing, and I am annoyed that the vast majority of professors don't have the balls to tell them to shut up and stop interrupting class. I am here to listen to the professor profess, not you jackass. I guess I just am a purist, but I have always found all of my professors way too tolerant of what I would consider persistent cordial interruptions by the same very small minority.

"UJustWait84: The motherfucker was crying about an A- he didn't even deserve to earn. As somebody who never once bitched about a grade, yet still managed to get good grades, and even get into grad school, this shit pisses me off. It pisses me off even more now that I actually teach. Nobody is entitled to getting an A in my class, you have to work for it. Not showing up to class 25% of the time, doesn't sound like an A student to me. But what do I know? I'm just a presumptuous prick"

1. Of course, he's a crappy student. I've already pointed that out. Point is, he got perfect scores on all his assignments, and was assigned lower grades than people who missed more classes than him with no explanation.
2. He originally was assigned a B. This professor was trying to give a full letter grade difference to students that he hadn't bothered to distinguish in any of his feedback throughout the semester.
3. Yes, you are a presumptuous prick. The fact that you teach classes doesn't change that. It does, however, make you more adorable.

"UJustWait84: The saddest thing of all is that it sounds like the prof just wound up giving everyone As because he had a shitty course syllabus and wasn't clear about his expectations of his students. I certainly wouldn't be proud for earning an A in any class like that. What a fucking joke of a class and what a sucky professor. I almost want to sympathize with the OP and be happy he bucked the system, but his warped sense of entitlement prevents me from it."

Yes! You seem to get it right up until you start talking about his warped sense of entitlement.

He is a CHASS major who has never made the Dean's List before. There's no way in hell he feels entitled to shit. And it looks like this is the first time in his college career that he's ever questioned a grade from a professor.

This is not the entitled snowflake you seek.

Grades should not be changed for any reason other than a transcription error or miscalculation of final points. That is the official University policy, and it is to protect instructors from grade grubbing pressure from students and even, gasp, their parents.

It irritates me that he increased your grade and thus encourages you (and other students who are reading what you wrote) to whine incessantly when the grade you earn is not to your liking. You would be wise to doubt the self reports of your peers' grades and percentages, by the way.

I suppose if you believe the rest of his story, you could always check the Dean's List and see if there's a winner with the last name Hawley.

at this statement. I am glad I didn't take this type BS class.

If I can make an A without your help and brown nosing, then what does it matter how I did it?

i hate this. it's especially annoying in engineering/math classes, where participation is NOT part of any sort of learning experience. every class has that kid who has to speak up and ask questions they already know the answer to.

If you take the OP at his word, this is a grade miscalculation situation.

Thankfully I don't have many of those students who just talk for the sake of hearing themselves talk.

I do have those who see the opportunity to participate and jump the gun a little bit- maybe they should finish their thought before blurting it out.

Can't tell you how many times during discussion about environmental determinism I've had students accidently reveal themselves to be closet Nazis.

Good times.
