Seeing a 78 speed on a record player is a bonus for me, but most of the ones that offer it are junk. Plus the 78s still in existence would probably really screw a stylus UP. I know they made a Beach Boys 78 for record store day, so I imagine you'd find a new one pressed every now and again, but I really don't care for listening to the Lionel Hampton Swing Band or Bing Crosby that badly.

^Glad you like the table. I love their designs at the peak of their production. Very mid-modern...

There are plenty of 78s that are worth listening to. I dug up some Billie Holiday from the 1939 the other day.

Here we go again...

Of course there are 78s worth listening to. Ask Robert Crumb.

Unfortunately, many of us don't have access to those 78s, and are not willing to break the bank on 2 songs; especially when most of them are in shitty condition/broken/don't have anything of quality to spin them on (see above), etc.

I saw some Thorens owners talking about swapping out their motors to make it a 78 player but I feel like that would be defiling a peice of art. I haven't seen any clean, stock looking modifications. The best solution is probably a yard sale buy that I keep hidden in the cabinet.

I'm just saying, if you dig around there are 78s that aren't easily listening and white man jazz.

You definitely need a 78-specific stylus, though. I've got a separate headshell with one rigged up that lives on the deck of my spare table.

I wouldn't break the bank on a 78, either; the record I mentioned was a $2 estate sale deal.

If you bought a Billie Holiday 78 record for $2, I'd consider that a score. They go on ebay for 10 or better all day, and I'm sure the people selling them don't know how to grade them whatsoever.

I only have a handful worth even having in my collection of 78s; namely some Ray Charles and Bessie Smith, and some others in storage because I don't bother to mess with them. In all my days of looking at 78 records, I've yet to come across many worth listening to. I'll still look, but as a complete skeptic.

I don't really know how to grade them, either; all the ones I've ever seen, even the ones that sound good, look like shit. But I figured it was worth $2 for what was a cool discussion piece at worst.

it was pretty much just the covers, the record itself survived. those are two of my favorites so having chewed up ones around didnt suffice

If you like the Walkmen, Insound.com is repressing 1000 of their first LP and you can only get it online at their site:
http://www.insound.com/Everyone-Who-Pretended-to-Like-Me-Is-Gone-Reissue-LP-The-Walkmen/P/INS101405/

I remember We've Been Had from the Saturn Ion commercials a looooong time ago.

They are also having a decent sale on current LPs right now. I wish somebody would buy all those copies of Veronica Falls and throw them in the trash.

Trying to keep this thread alive I guess.

Had a decent score last night. Couple old Atlantic soul records like Percy Sledge, Wailing with BB King, some Grover Washington, etc.

What phono pre-amps do you guys use? I've got a built in pre-amp on my Sherwood Newcastle and a cheap pre-amp from Radioshack. Looking to upgrade...

Also, do you know of anybody that works on vintage tables around here? I was going to just learn about doing things I've never done by diving in (such as replacing the capacitor on that Dual), but time and laziness are factors, as it turns out.

My grandparents used to take their electronics (TV and stereo) to a guy in Raleigh but I'm not sure he's still around. This was at least 10 years ago. Otherwise you're probably stuck reading forums and DIY.

Another great receiver at a decent price. 70-71 era Sansui in Durham.

It's ugly, but pretty good ratings on the audiophile boards.

Other notables in that haul aren't too great but include some Butthole Surfers, Black Flag, The The, Pixies and a couple obscure, small label finds.

11. Appears to be 3rd pressing if this guy knows what he's talking about.

Still think I'm on a high from finding this. Lots of worthless trips and just got reminded why I do it again.

Also got a potentially amazing contact for some stuff that I hope works out. If it's what this person was telling me, I could have hit the Atlantic/Stax/etc jackpot.

I've got a second pressing, but it's boring black. Wasn't sure if the bonus tracks started with the '92 reissues or the newer ones.

I want a Stax jackpot.

From all the stuff I found today, I basically berrated the dude, saying "there's no way you didn't get more records in." I feel like he was blowing smoke up my ass and it's only a matter of time before I go back and see an Incesticide or better...

I'm just saying there's no way for somebody to have collected these without having others. And it's not like there's anyway these had already been cherry picked...

All of that haul I listed was sold today at Bull City Records (Butthole Surfers, Black Flag, Pixies and some other indie shit from the late 80s, etc). I will have a box worth I'm bringing in tomorrow as well, but it's mostly older stuff; classic rock, some jazz comps, and a copy of Frampton comes alive. In any case, they are getting a ton of my vinyl for anyone interested. A travelling man doesn't need 13 boxes worth of vinyl at over 50 pounds a box. We have it worked out where he's starting to keep good used stock and offers me a fair price for whatever I'm able to sell to him.

That's the one, the debut. The first five are all good. Didn't notice it there because that's not the standard cover art, nor is it the European cover art. Now I'm intrigued.

Okay, so this table is highly overpriced usually. HOWEVER, the dude is asking what may be a fair price with all things considered. Reviews are average at best, but I think most people are complaining about the price (for example, it's almost $600 wherever I try to look online and that's insanely ridiculous). The $125 appears to be a fair price though, for anyone in the market.

Just got back with these things; 2 need cleaning, and indeed it's a picture disc with the original wrapper over the top, and it's in crazy condition.

All in all, they are in really, really good condition.

pps - 2 of these will be going to BCR today. lol.

$5 LPs/albums at Urban -

War On Drugs - Slave Ambient
the Strokes - Under Cover of Darkness
the Head and the Heart - S/T
Washed Out - Within and Without
Tyler the Creator - Goblin
Danger Mouse/etc - Rome
Some Wu-Tang album (more recent; didn't recognize it)
Puro Instinct

I feel like a few more, but I've forgotten. It's basically whatever was marked down.

$10 Albums -

Grateful Dead - Workingman's Dead, American Beauty
Cults - Cults
a few others ...

IF YOU SEE THIS YOU BETTER GET THERE BY 10AM. IT IS NOT CROWDED AND WORTH IT IF YOU WANT ANY OF THESE ALBUMS. THIS IS CHEAPER THAN THEY PAID THE DISTRIBUTOR MOST LIKELY

Just going through a few eBay listings to see what's being offered more or less; wondering what my collection would look like if I didn't take a 6 year hiatus.

Hold onto your Blue Note records, apparently. Not sure if this includes US3's Hand on the Torch.

Haha, this sounds amazing:

Within a year or two. His inventory is pretty killer, but on the overpriced side in my opinion. The condition of his albums a lot of times offsets that, though. He also has one of those expensive cleaning machines and will clean your records for a dollar (worth it depending on the album. Save the Barbara Streisand, get him to clean that original Dave Brubeck Time Out album)...

If anyone is looking to spend some serious cash on a killer audiophile turntable setup, you can contact Audio Advice locally about the purchase of a Linn table (they make amps, etc as well). I'd be highly envious of your cashflow and your will to seek higher sound.

In other news, I scored big today, randomly. Brought in about 50 news from a contact.
