or

POOLE's DINER >>>>>>>>>>>>>> THE DINER on Glenwood?

b/c while i love diner food, i am looking for innovation here, and while i haven't had the pleasure of dining at Poole's, THE DINER is disappointing for what could have been. But then again so is Solas and the Hibernian so I don't know why I thought it would be different...."

The Diner is a poor attempt at imitating the nostalgic value of diner food and atmosphere. It tries way too hard, and it's just not as good as what it bills itself to be.

Poole's just happens to successfully draw out the atmosphere and theme of a diner in the process of being well-structured and perfectly executed.

...and yeah Bobby is going to stomp her. Doesn't really mean anything about the quality of her ability as a chef.

^His food being nothing special doesn't really affect Iron Chef. Executing quickly and consistently has always pretty much determined the winner.

And yeah he's probably thinking about Finch's. Pretty much fits the bill.

I've been to that North Ridge Pub place next door like 50 times (restaurant.com ftw), but I tried Tiramisu once and while the food was pretty good, it seemed like most of the dishes were heavy creme/butter sauces which I generally *try* to avoid. Great patio seating though. For italian I'm liking that Bella Monica place...only been there a few times though.

Also has anyone tried the Hayes Barton Cafe? I've only been once but was definitely impressed (and didn't even try the cake)

So I'm gonna be down in Raleigh on Saturday with some peeps and need something resonably quick (not fast food necessarily) because we're not gonna have a lot of time.

I had to be the guy to say "lets go somewhere cool for lunch" so if it sucks I'm sure to get mocked

Suggestions?

If you want somewhere hipster pretentious but with tasty lunch and really good coffee I recommend Wilmoore Cafe downtown. I really like the atmosphere of that place but my husband makes fun of me for it

For some great authentic Mexican there's Rancho Grande. The place looks like a total dive and they don't speak English but their food is the tits.

If you want to be so full you'll likely puke at the wedding, go to Tribeca Tavern. I fucking love their burgers but I pretty much have to go on hunger strike the entire day to be hungry enough for one

i could eat those places all day everyday. i think those are prob my two favs (if i had all the bling bling to spend anyway)

my less blingin fav at the moment would prob be capital club 16

and the ole standby is always and forever, the raleigh times

I see myself as a little bit of a foody (don't judge me because I run a pizza bar)

and I honestly, comfortably say that Angus Barn is the most overrated racket of a business I've ever indulged in. Just, wow. Been there twice, had a big steak and a big tater and some roasted tomato quarter, that ran me about $40. I laughed after I ate last time and vowed to never be duped into going again.

You can get a better steak at COUNTLESS places. Namely, Sullivan's or Porters, just to start.

but, if I have to vote about my personal favorites in Raleigh, I'd go with:

Hot Point Deli (OK, Cary)
Sitti
Raleigh Times (arguably, nothing extravagant, but damn good none the less)
Fai Thai (though I did hear it closed recently??? twould be a major shame)

To be fair, there are surely dozens of good places I have yet to try--several in this thread, actually.

and oh fuck yes, khcadwal, Midtown is fucking AWESOME. haven' been there in months. Thank you.

cheese and crackers and relish =/= $40. I can spin that shit up in my kitchen.

I've never been to Poole's Diner. Britt and I always talk about going, then don't.

We do stuff like that a lot.

Matter of fact, I told tschudi we'd be at Neptune's last week.

never left the house.

Damn Fai Thai closed already???? That didn't last long at all

Are ya'll sure about that because I drove by it two weekends ago and it was open. If it's true it's a shame because their food was pretty good. Not your typical Thai that you find everywhere else around here.

I think the only reason Angus Barn sticks around is because for a long time it was the only place to get a decent steak in the area. Now there's tons of restaurants where you can get a much better steak but Angus Barn survives of the reputation of the before time.

That said, I never order steak at restaurants. I can make a delicious steak at home with minimal effort for a lot less money.

The main reason I enjoy the Angus Barn is that often have varying types of game on the menu. Had some venison there one time that was damn awesome. Their Prime Rib isn't bad either.

If you're in the mood for Irish Pub fare I suggest Trali...its pretty tasty!

i like angus barn b/c it is NOT alacarte. i get the cheese/crackers, relish tray, big salad, toast/bread, and my entree which is 7 oz filet and half-rack of ribs WITH choice of side.... all for $40

there is noway you get ALL that food for only 40 bucks at sullivans or any upscale steakhouse in raleigh...

how much is a 7oz filet at sullivans? i've always been a huge fan of sullivans, but it seems like the steak alone is $35-$40 (for like a strip...not a big filet or something). is the steak THAT much better at sullivans than the angus barn? i'm inclined to think yes...but the angus barn does sound more economical

But these days you don't have to go to just a steakhouse to get a great steak. There are plenty of great restaurants in the area that also have great steak on their menu. The only real benefit to a steakhouse is they have more varieties of cuts.

^^ I went there for the first time a few months ago and it was indeed tasty. But yeah, for some reason we never think to go there. Probably because I hate the Crossroads area with a passion.

^ Fearrington House, Second Empire, Magnolia Grill, Rue Cler, Weathervane, Poole's and I'm sure plenty of others. Only thing that sucks is there's never a guarantee steak will be on the menu the night you go.
