I just finished up a couple of RR.com Wiki Articles:Raleigh Police Dept Monitoring Guide:http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Raleigh_NC_Police_Monitoring_GuideUsing Google Earth to Map out Raleigh PD Districts/Beats:http://bit.ly/GoogleEarthRPDOver the next few weeks I will be coding more NC Based Monitoring Wiki Articles. If there is something radio comm specific you wish to see at the Wiki let me know please. Thanks!

Got to use one of the tools of the HomePatrol "Extreme" feature set to map out GSK's EDACS system today:So I am sitting at my computer at work this afternoon and going through some old radio related files and posts here at RR.com. I stumbled across an old thread in the NC forum where another local ham mentions the following local EDACS system that had not been mapped out:

I wish there was a way I could monitor the Clayton PD
1/5/2012 12:14:48 PM
^I can understand. I live in Clayton for couple years off Amelia Church Rd and had thousands of dollars of radio gear that was useless in monitoring their comms. To be fair to JoCo here are a couple of my past statements on them using Provoice digital:
1/5/2012 7:53:36 PM
One of the features that is present on several of my radios that I am juststarting to use more and more is the Bandscope feature. The more I use it themore I find it comes in handy in figuring out where radio traffic is occurring. It is just amazing how powerful radios are today and how many features are there that we sometimes overlook.
1/7/2012 7:32:37 PM
The first 700Mhz VIPER site has been activated and is online in the RTP area:Still almost no voice activity yet but before long the old phrase "If you build it they will come" will be true as users are migrated on the new P25 system.

For those that watch Leo Laporte's "This Week in Tech"....On one of the TWiT CES Episodes Leo had Gordon West on to show off radios being shown at CES.Among other radios Gordo displayed was the Uniden HomePatrol HP-1. This is awesome becauseI helped make the HP-1 become reality. I was able to grab some screencaps from the TWiT episode:Leo Laporte W6TWT introduces Gordon West WB6NOA:Gordon West WB6NOA with the Uniden HomePatrol HP-1 (and some other device in his other hand): Another pic of Gordo holding the HP-1:Even better shot of the HP-1:Leo Laporte W6TWT holding the Uniden HomePatrol HP-1:My favorite screencap showing Leo Laporte W6TWT holding the Uniden HomePatrol HP-1:I would recommend watching the episode because not only are scanners shown but also receivers from Crane, Eton and more are shown. Great to see the scanner companies get some love from Leo and TWiT! Marshall KE4ZNR

Yo. Check this out. I listened to the Cary feed the other day and no joke, for about 15 minutes I listened to two dudes talking about meeting someone to buy some weed.
1/16/2012 7:04:05 PM
^ Not totally surprised. Perhaps a sting op? I hear DEA & FBI on VIPER pretty regularly discussing ops. Sometimes folks forget to switch their radios to encrypted.
1/17/2012 6:25:50 PM
I dunno. It sounded like the type of dudes that would be buying weed.

should have recorded that junk

For those that monitor Raleigh PD on a daily basis you may have noticed quite a change in howthe channels are dispatched that started today at 2pm. This is actually the 2nd time Raleigh PD hastested out a new way of dispatching they are calling "Split District Dispatching". I have put together an explanation over at RR.com (http://bit.ly/RPDSplitDistrict) but I will include it here as well:===============================================================================RPD giving Split Dispatching another run Today, Thursday Feb 9th, from 2pm to around 10pm Raleigh PD Dispatch talkgroups will change a little. As most are aware Raleigh PD divides the city up into 6 districts:The Northwest District units have 1xx radio callsigns and their dispatch TG is 40016.The North District units have 2xx radio callsigns and their dispatch TG is 40032.The Northeast District units have 3xx radio callsigns and their dispatch TG is 40048.The Southeast District units have 4xx radio callsigns and their dispatch TG is 40064.The Downtown District units have 5xx radio callsigns and their dispatch TG is 40080.The Southwest District units have 6xx radio callsigns and their dispatch TG is 40096.Since Raleigh PD moved to 800Mhz all 6 dispatch talkgroups above have been patched together with one dispatcher dispatching calls citywide. Raleigh PD has also used 3 Status Channel TGs:40112= Southern Unit (4xx, 5xx, 6xx) Status (also known as "Ral 2")40192= Northern Unit (1xx, 2xx, 3xx) Status (also known as "Ral 3")40400= Special Ops Status (also known as "Ral 8")Today a test run is being done called "Split District Dispatching". Today from 2pm to around 10pm the following dispatch talkgroups will be patched together and dispatched out independently:*Northwest District (1xx Units) TG 40016 will be patched to Southwest District (6xx Units) TG 40096. *North District (2xx Units) TG 40032 will be patched to Northeast District (3xx Units) TG 40048. *Downtown District (5xx Units) TG 40080 will be patched to Southeast District (4xx Units) TG 40064. With this new Split District Dispatching there is another big change: The 3 status TGs will NOT be used. All Dispatch & Status will occur on the Dispatch Talkgroup as evident in this example:Note that RPD Officers are advised to use their MCTs (Computers) for as much off radio routine status info such as report numbers, nature change, code, status to free up the Dispatch TGs.Also note that High Priority calls (robberies, shootings) will be dispatched over all 6 dispatch TGs.Also Keep in mind that Wake County Event 10 (TG 34368) is set aside as a Countywide "Chase" Channel. This is for Multi-agency use for situations such as a pursuit that starts in one Wake County city/town and extends to other agencies jurisdiction. I always recommend keeping Event 10 in your scan list. Again: this is a test today until 10pm however Raleigh PD will being going to Split Dispatching permanentlya little later this month.[Edited on February 9, 2012 at 6:01 PM. Actually the hotness is the Thales Liberty:http://www.thalesliberty.com/http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=at9FoJBAqRUJust gotta have around $5K to drop on one. And that does not include the fact you have to know someone in high places to get it programmed after you drop that $5K.

The Wake Simulcast part of VIPER is really being put to work tonight....very busy...

Man...I forgot this thread was around Since the last time I posted here I have had some big radio related news. I took a position as an Electronics Technicanwithin Radio Communications for the City of Durham. Basically it is our job to keep the radios working on the Trunked Radio System that the City & County uses. Our shop also houses the telecom techs that keep the infrastructure (sites, towers, zone controllers, etc) running. It is a blast to get paid to "play radio" all day long.I have been issued my own Moto XTS5K:Which has 40+ Zones of every active talkgroup on the Durham Radio System plus various VIPER & Cary Talkgroups. We have been testing out an Aeroflex 3920 to help us keep our radios in optimum working condition. Here is the Aeroflex making sure my XTS5K is within peak performance parameters: Sorry I have not contributed much lately but I have been busy learning the ropes of the new job.
3/16/2012 8:41:21 PM
^glad to see you doing what you really enjoyif only we all could have a job like that
3/18/2012 9:53:15 AM
^ So do I. Thanks for the kind words. I still have friends that have been in a long job term searchwith the economy still soft. I was lucky enough to go from oneprofession I enjoyed (I.T.) to what my real passion has always been (Radio & Electronics). If I can do anything to help others out I do everything I can as I know how it feels to have someone believe in your talentsand skills enough to give you a chance.

For those monitoring NCSHP on analog voice talkgroups in troop C. They will be switching to digital voice talkgroups sooner than later. A good majority of the state has beenswitched over. I was just given this info earlier today:

Is civilian possession of a digital radio a crime yet?

I'm trying to get my two new meteorologists to take the Technician exam in the next month, but they keep complaining that the QRZ exams site that I sent them to was too difficult and they don't understand anything. Any tips for newbies trying to take that first exam? I would love for them to have it before our storm season ramps up.
3/27/2012 8:40:34 PM
^^ @smc--Sorry Mang. This ain't the soap box radios are still 100% legal America.

^^ @Stormbone865--The following site has some good links to online practice tests.http://www.arrl.org/exam-practiceI will try to see if I can find a link to something more entertaining test wise later once I get home.

To give everyone an idea of how well VIPER covers NC these days here is a short Youtube video showing my Motorola XTS 5000 located in West Raleigh with audio from a search underway for a jump and run suspect that fled from a checkpoint north of Randleman (Randolph County) and wrecked off Hwy 220 Business. Guilford County is assisting with the search. All agencies involved are operating on one of the Statewide Event Talkgroups (Bravo 1). http://youtu.be/BrRKsKd_zHYI am able to monitor this on the stock rubber duck antenna. Not bad considering that I am about 80miles away from where this is occurring.
3/29/2012 6:19:22 PM

Can you recommend a SW radio, like around 50 or 60 (or less) that will pick up shortwave numbers stations?
4/1/2012 9:19:05 PM
^ LaserSoup--Man oh man. Finding a decent enough receiver to pick up Numbers Stations out of the noise for less than $200 is a tough one If you can find a discontinued Sangean 909 on the secondary market you might find one for $150-$200.I have a 909 in my collection and love it. For current receivers in your price range I would give the Grundig G3 Globe Traveler a try.http://www.grove-ent.com/grg3.htmlIt averages around $100 and has decent reviews. I will reach out to some friends thatare SW buffs and see if they have any other suggestions. [Edited on April 2, 2012 at 11:16 AM. Reason : clarity]
4/2/2012 11:15:54 AM
^ Thanks, actually that's good advice right there. I should have asked for optimum specs for what I want to do. I'll probably just look for something second hand and up my dollar amount or just stay in that same range with the intent on just listening in to anything I can pick up. Still if you can recommend anything I really apprciate the help.
4/2/2012 11:33:27 AM
not to mention you gotta get realllllllllll lucky to pick up the numbers stations as they seem to be at random times on random days.
4/2/2012 11:47:14 AM
^ Ben's correct. You gotta have not only a decent receiver but some luck as well To be fair: You don't need a $4000 Watkins Johnson receiver...you just need a decent SW portable and a decent antenna. One of the mantras I have learned over the years is: Signal Reception is 40 percent receiver, 50 percent antenna and 10 percent luck. You could have a top of the line Sony 2010 but if your antenna sucks baws then your awesome receiver withsynchronous detection will be wasted. If you buy a bottom of the line portable with cheap filtering and hook it up to a good beverage longwire antenna it will overload and you will (most likely) receive QRM (crap). One thing is for damn sure: radio reception can very greatly based off location. What works for me stands a good chance of not working for you because we live in different areas. Reception is a trial and error process until you find a combo of receiver plus antenna that does work in your specific location. One site that I should have passed along earlier is the HFUnderground's Wiki:http://www.hfunderground.com/wiki/Spy_Numbers_StationsIt has a ton of good info and tips on when and where to listen.
4/2/2012 5:41:39 PM
^,^^ Thanks to both, I know nothing about radios and have recently gotten into listening to police scanners. I should probably start small and see if I get into it. Thanks again for the advice.
4/2/2012 9:10:18 PM
Because I am bored here is a pic of my desk at work:The computer screen at the top is our "Zonewatch" software system that allows us to see real time activity on all 21 channels of our radio system. And the dual soldering iron station that (sadly) I have not had a chance to use yet. I have it ready though And of course a DC power supply is a must have in any radio shop. Have a good Easter to those that still follow this thread
4/5/2012 10:04:25 PM
the talk in this thread about numbers stations has got me listening to shortwave again... the past few days I've come across some pretty bad interference that sounds like this (not my video):interesting, but also annoying... last night it spanned 1700khz up to 5500khz!I also heard WLO maritime radio around 6318khz, and a bunch of foreign language stuff above that.[Edited on April 10, 2012 at 10:47 PM. Reason : vid]
4/10/2012 10:45:03 PM
^ Awesome vid. jtw: some folks consider the "big SWL broadcasters" leaving Shortwave for online streaming a drawback. I don't.It actually makes catching these unique stations that much more fun. Numbers, Military, ALE, Pirates, etc. There is still a crap ton of interesting stuff to hear on the HF part of the radio spectrum. You just never know what you will hear from one night to the next. Having an up to date copy of Monitoring Times helps sure, but I love just blind tuning across bands to see what I can pick up. Oh and yep......I totally spaced out and missed RARSFest last weekend. And I only live about 5 mins away from the Fairgrounds Oh well. Always next year.
4/10/2012 10:52:21 PM
now that you mention it, I forgot about it too... I meant to go and take the General, and buy a few things. oh well!
4/11/2012 9:02:54 AM
i've been reading more about over the horizon radar since hearing the interference. evidently there is an operational transmit/receive station in Chesapeake, VA that is aimed towards the Caribbean and the gulf of mexico. You can see the receiver array in google maps (that 1.5 mile line that almost parallels the border):View Larger Mapthis is what the array looks like up close:and that big tan circle right on the border between VA and NC? that is a deactivated Naval HF direction finding array. They used to use them to track soviet subs and pretty much any other HF radio signal they could pull in. more info here:http://www.fas.org/irp/program/collect/classic_bullseye.htmpretty cool stuff if you ask me.[Edited on April 16, 2012 at 4:10 PM. 4/16/2012 4:08:08 PM
^ You have now given me a reason to pull out my Sangean 909 and use it to its full potential. Been so tied up with 800Mhz activity here in NC that I have forgotten my love of HF.Gotta homebrew me a decent SW antenna. That can be a project for this weekend
4/16/2012 7:51:38 PM
i'm picking it up REALLY strong (S9+10) right now on 3045 and 3060. you can hear the frequency shifting as it scans. i'm uploading a clip to youtube so you can see how it sounds for me:[Edited on April 16, 2012 at 9:21 PM. Reason : video]

^ Great catch and thanks for sharing the vid. Heading out to KRDU tomorrow. There should be some military aircraft there in advance of thePresidents visit Tuesday. Always is interesting to see what is parked out front of G.A.I share my radio pr0n of the evening:That would be my Uniden BCD396XT, a Radio Shack Pro 106, and my Moto XTS 5K.
4/20/2012 5:44:42 PM
Captured a few pics of a Sikorsky VH-3D Sea King C/N 61725 at KRDU General Aviation (TAC Air FBO) on Saturday. Part of the advance team in town ahead of President Obama's scheduled visit tomorrow.Rest of the pics can be found at: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjz2Jt4sAlways some unique comms come alive whenever a President visits...most Federal Freqs are,of course, encrypted however the local agencies keep their comms in the clear. I would recommend monitoring SHP Troop C Mutual Aid and Statewide Event Talkgroups (analog & digital) as both have been used in the past to coordinate traffic control.

Ke4znr, do you have an opinion on the manufacturers of racing scanners? From what I can tell, Racing Electronics makes the best headsets, but I'm curious about their line of scanners. Do you know how they compare to some of the others like Track Scan?
4/25/2012 8:27:56 PM
^ Honestly brother I have not used the racing scanners myself. I do believe the ones RE offers online are "rebadged/rebranded" Uniden Scanners.to get a better response from folks that probably have used them feel free to posta question in this forum at Radioreference.com and I am sure folks will chime right into help you out:http://forums.radioreference.com/sports-recreational-events/apparently this site has up to date frequency lists for NASCAR:http://www.jayski.com/links/scanners.htmLet me know if you still don't get an answer from RR.com.
4/26/2012 12:11:56 PM
well, i think i have convinced myself to purchase the SC230 and not try to get one of the RE badged ones. I think it will be more useful in the long run away from the track and it will have enough memory to do more with it than just racing stuff.
4/26/2012 12:17:07 PM
^ Are you talking about this one for $259.95? http://www.racingelectronics.net/index.php?event=store&action=details&cat=handheld_scanners&item=SC230Dude, save yourself some money and get a Uniden BCD346XT for $209.95:http://www.scannermaster.com/Uniden_Bearcat_BC346XT_Police_Scanner_p/10-501357.htmIt is an all around much better analog scanner with more features. It will handle Nascar just fine and you willbe happier long term. I can even help you get it programmed correctly the first couple times so you are running good out of the gate. I just know the 346XT is a MUCH better scanner than the SC230 at a much less price.
4/26/2012 6:03:39 PM
A scanner buff in FL recorded this short video showing Unitrunker in action:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dv38j1PtnIEThe beeps and buzzes you hear are unique to an EDACS system (of which Brevard Co uses):http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=200In NC there are only 3 EDACS systems of significant size in use by Public Safety agencies:Johnston County, Harnett County, and city of Hickory. For those that want more info on Unitrunker you can surf over to:http://unitrunker.com/

^^Just found an SC230 for $177 from a brick and mortar in MD that has an online storefront.
