has anyone noticed that some maps look like this

and make it look like the world is going to end because they have the sensitivity of the radar

but the actual precipitation radar has no red and the rain is just a little bit that hasn't made landfall yet.

having 2 major threads on this is annoying.

from my post in teh lounge:

I'll go ahead and post ones that are of interest to me (near my house). You will need to reload the page for these to update. The pictures update every 10 minutes during the day (not operation at night )

These will be interesting if the storm stays east and blows/pushes water up the river. Wind tides are what cause major flooding here.

General location of these cams: Around the Oriental Harbor, Oriental, NC (ignore Google's markers... those are meaningless here)

Cute.

Also:
Quote :
"11:45 a.m. – In anticipation of Hurricane Irene, some airlines have begun canceling flights, according to Raleigh-Durham International Airport. American Airlines and American Eagle have canceled all flights scheduled for Saturday. American Airlines will resume operations at 10 a.m. Sunday. "At this time, approximately 70 of the airport’s 400 daily scheduled flights have been canceled for Saturday ... More delays and cancellations could be announced later today and tomorrow," RDU officials said."

That first image you posted is NOT a radar image. It is an infrared satellite that shows cloud-top temperatures

Monitoring the Hurricane Radio traffic through the State EOC/OEMS...if anyone here has
the monitoring capability the following Viper Medical Network Talkgroups are in use:

59440--State OEMS TG (also monitored by State EOC)
59888--SMAT Home
59904--SMRS Command (Cumberland Co)
59920--SMRS Logistics (Pitt County)
59936--SMRS Staging

Also keep Med 10 (462.975Mhz with 173.8Hz CTCSS) and Med 8 (463.175Mhz with 173.8Hz CTCSS) handy as backup.

I am working on getting a streaming audio feed of the above talkgroups/channels.

I have also received word that the Coastal SHP Troops/Districts will be included in the Streaming Audio Feed:
http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?action=wp&feedId=7042

Edit to add:

Ham Radio HF Hurricane Watch Net on 14.325Mhz:
http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?feedId=9538

Quote :
"Status: The Hurricane Watch Net will re-activate when Irene makes landfall Friday evening. You're now hearing normal amateur radio operators using the frequency under normal use until the net resumes on this frequency."

My mom just called and claimed the hurricane was turning west towards Raleigh. I'm assuming she's full of crap?

I wouldn't worry. They're probably just being slow on making the decision.

Friend's in Newport are reporting power outages...

I'm honestly surprised we still have power, normally the power shuts off here with just the slightest breeze
