If you somehow have access to the Oxford English Dictionary (my public library has a subscription to the online edition), look up the term "gay" (entry 77207) and notice how much funnier the quotations supporting older definitions now sound; for example there's this:
Quote :
"b. Originally of persons and later also more widely: dedicated to social pleasures; dissolute, promiscuous; frivolous, hedonistic. Also (esp. in to go gay ): uninhibited; wild, crazy; flamboyant. Cf. Gay Nineties n. at Special uses 2a. Now rare.
See also gay dog n. at Special uses 2a. gay Lothario: see Lothario n.
...
1754 Adventurer No. 124. ?7 The old gentleman, whose character I cannot better express than in the fashionable phrase which has been contrived to palliate false principles and dissolute manners, had been a gay man, and was well acquainted with the town.
...
1879 National Police Gaz. 4 Jan. 6/1 Besides being very handsome, there are reasons to fear that Mr. Charles Victor Fremy was sometimes very, very gay.
...
1897 J. Hutchinson Archives Surg. VIII. 224 My patient was a married man, who admitted having been very gay in early life.
...."
This is from sense 4 of section A (the adjective, as opposed to the adverb or noun), and all mah peepz in the nasty 'nati can look up the whole thing here: http://research.cincinnatilibrary.org:2071/viewdictionaryentry/Entry/77207

According to the OED, this definition morphed into the now rare euphemism "(of a woman) living by prostitution" (A.4.c) and from there to the dominant definition "homosexual" (A.4.d).
Notably, the usage as a noun is considered slang, both as (C.5.a) "gay person" and as (C.5.b) "gay people as a class"; however, unlike other places, the OED does not yet regard this usage as "offensive" even though the entry was last updated in March 2008

I really can't imagine that kind of shit happening in real life on a frequent enough basis to warrant writing an awareness comic about it.

For you, as for most people (even the catcallers and bigots), a lesbian couple is a rare sight; for lesbian couples, bigots, catcallers, and other hazards are daily occurrences.

I live in Seattle. All this shit is normal, and thank god no one carries on with this kind of bullshit here.

I work with trans people, gay people, know a bunch of folks all over the spectrum. And this entire thread just irritates the shit out of me. You aren't going to change people's minds by posting whambulance comics, or creating new vocabularies, or ever more complicated diagrams. Its not helping any cause or minority.

Treat people like human beings, be humble, be attracted to whoever you like and let others do the same. Done.

^^The term is "otherkin" and it sounds like the kind of thing that Rethugs refer to when they want to discredit transgenderism.

Maybe there's a better thread for this, but I'd like to get this one back on track with a story about the new director of the Charlotte LGBT Center, who faces the difficult task of getting the center out of its fiscal hole (like being late on paying rent and Federal and state taxes) and also receives racial animus from the community because he is Black: http://www.theroot.com/articles/culture/2014/07/lgbt_center_s_26_year_old_first_black_chair_faces_racial_hostility.html

You sound like the people that want to erase the concept of race and just declare everyone be treated equally by everyone else. This is a common stance taken by people in the privileged party and it ignores the metric ton of historical oppression and prejudice that will not simply stop existing and affecting things.

And the fact that at least one person has said something here "was actually pretty interesting" leads me to believe the thread is not a lost cause.

Couldn't Q cover both L and G? Seems redundant.

QBT seems sufficent.

Q typically stands for "Questioning" or as a sort of catch-all for people who aren't both straight and cis but don't like more specific labels.

^^"Q" used to stand for queer, as in genderqueer

^I did too until recently.

these acronyms have gone too far. at least arrange them in a way that you could sound something out - like "quabglit"

^I actually did intend to make this thread a "Q & A"; the title is a pun. ("A" also stands for "asexual" but is usually not included in the initialism.)
